Welcome to the first Luen Thai celebration of the United Nation's "World Environment Day." I am very happy that you can  join us this afternoon in this short but ve ry important program. Through this event, we at Luen Thai, are reaffirming our commitment to responsible environmental practices. As a recognized leader in the apparel industry, we also want to set the pace in promoting environmental awareness and protection. Over the years, we have demonstrated this commitment through our corporate social responsibility practices and day-to-day business operations. Today, we call on our stakeholders like our customers, government officials, and employees to make environment initiatives and awareness work. Environmental protection is an initiative that will benefit us all. And it will continue to benefit the future generation.  As a company with more than 12,000 employees in the Dongguan facility alone, we ca n do a lot. The individual plays an important role in the success of energy saving and environmental protection measures. This is why we marked this special day with activities for employees to create awareness on the subject of environmental protection. Externally, even our customers are making requests for us to support green initiatives and even coming up with more environmental-friendly products. In response to all these, we will soon launch our own Green Campaign, which we hope will make a big difference to the environment and look forward to significant cost savings. We believe we must set long-term objectives in terms of caring and protecting the environment. This is part of our commitment to be a good corporate citizen. I count on everyone's support for our green initiative to suceed. Earth supports all lives. No matter how things have changed and evolved in the past 4.5 billion years, all that survive through the long journey today should be treasured. Today, earth is home to around 6.2 billion people most of who are longing for a peaceful and harmonious life. Very few would want war. However, since these few people are those who are on top of the power pyramid and in control, wars are still happening. Luen Thai is a great company. I believe only a company that cares for environment would continue to lead the industry. There was a time when people thought it was impossible for a company to make good profit while at the same time taking good care of the environment. However, Toyota was clever to research into economical and gas saving cars during the energy crisis in 1970’s. As a result, it won over the market and overtook the large automakers in America. So I believe only with a certain responsibility to the environment can an enterprise grow healthily and consistently. We are volunteers for the protection of environment, so far we have seen very few companies incorporate environmental protection into their company culture or consider environment protection as part of their responsibility. I would like to thank Luen Thai for engaging me in your Geen Campaign. I hope the concept of environment protection will continuously be communicated among all the employees in the future. Thank you for your support to environment protection! Thank you for your gifts! Thank you to all those who are dedicated to environmental protection! WORLD Environment Day is celebrated globally today with activities and events to remind us of our impact on the environment and also the things we can do to improve and protect the environment. Everyone can do something for the environment. For a start, we could consider the six steps described below. One, respect life and renew our bond with nature. Without respect for nature and its biodiversity, there will be no desire to protect them. Developing respect means recognising that all living things have a right to live on this planet and that we should do no harm to them. It is also time for us to renew

Welcome to the first Luen Thai celebration of the United Nation's "World Environment Day." I am very happy that you can join us this afternoon in this short but very important program.

Through this event, we at Luen Thai, are reaffirming our commitment to responsible environmental practices. As arecognized leader in the apparel industry, we also want to set the pace in promoting environmental awareness andprotection.

Over the years, we have demonstrated this commitment through our corporate social responsibility practices and day-to-daybusiness operations. Today, we call on our stakeholders like our customers, government officials, and employees to makeenvironment initiatives and awareness work.

Environmental protection is an initiative that will benefit us all. And it will continue to benefit the future generation.

As a company with more than 12,000 employees in the Dongguan facility alone, we can do a lot. The individual plays animportant role in the success of energy saving and environmental protection measures. This is why we marked this specialday with activities for employees to create awareness on the subject of environmental protection.

Externally, even our customers are making requests for us to support green initiatives and even coming up with moreenvironmental-friendly products. In response to all these, we will soon launch our own Green Campaign, which we hope willmake a big difference to the environment and look forward to significant cost savings.

We believe we must set long-term objectives in terms of caring and protecting the environment. This is part of ourcommitment to be a good corporate citizen. I count on everyone's support for our green initiative to suceed.

Earth supports all lives. No matter how things have changed and evolved in the past 4.5 billion years, all that survivethrough the long journey today should be treasured.

Today, earth is home to around 6.2 billion people most of who are longing for a peaceful and harmonious life. Very fewwould want war. However, since these few people are those who are on top of the power pyramid and in control, wars arestill happening.

Luen Thai is a great company. I believe only a company that cares for environment would continue to lead the industry. There was a time when people thought it was impossible for a company to make good profit while at the same time taking

good care of the environment. However, Toyota was clever to research into economical and gas saving cars during theenergy crisis in 1970’s. I would like to thankLuen Thai for engaging me in your Geen Campaign. I hope the concept of environment protection will continuously becommunicated among all the employees in the future.

WORLD Environment Day is celebrated globally today with activities and eventsto remind us of our impact on the environment and also the things we can do to

improve and protect the environment.Everyone can do something for the environment. For a start, we could considerthe six steps described below. One, respect life and renew our bond with nature. our bond with nature, and start appreciating the natural world around us.Two, improve our environmental awareness and knowledge. It would be good tofirst read up on local and global environmental issues. What are the currentenvironmental trends and problems? What needs to be done?Ideally, a holistic view on the environment should be adopted so that the

interdependence of various environmental problems can be understood.Three, practise the 3 „Rs‟ – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (in order of sequence). Thesequence is important as source reduction is usually the best way to minimisewastage.Reduce by not creating the wastage or minimising the waste in the beginning.Reuse by using the waste several times or for another purpose. Recycle bysending the waste to be processed as a resource.Four, spread the environmental message and influence others. We can go a stepfurther by spreading the environmental message and educating family members, friends, classmates or colleagues.

Furthermore, we can influence the organisation that we belong to, whether it is aschool, a company or a social group, to be more environmentally friendly.Five, support local environmental initiatives and groups. Instead of relying orexpecting the Government to take care of the environment, it is time for us totake responsibility. We can participate in government initiatives and

It gives me great pleasure to be among you today on the occasion of the World EnvironmentDay and the 25th  Foundation Day of the National Museum of Natural History. The WorldEnvironment Day is a reminder to show our gratefulness to Mother Nature, which sustains allforms of life. This is the day to focus our thoughts and our energies to make collective efforts

towards protecting the environment. It is on this historic day in 1972, the United Nation‟sConference on Human Environment began in Stockholm. This year UNEP has given a veryappropriate theme for the Environment Day which is, “Water – Two billion people are dying forit”. This is an urgent appeal to each one of us to recognize the significance of “Elixir of Life” andthe role each one of us can play to conserve it.

We should be proud of our country‟s natural bounty and unique bio-diversity. India isamongst the rare countries where major biomes of the world are represented. India is oneamong the twelve countries where 60-70% of the world‟s total biodiversity exists. India has twoout of the 18 biodiversity hot spots in the world.

India has rich traditional knowledge and wisdom in the conservation of nature and natural

resources. Religious beliefs, culture and folklore have together treated nature and environmentwith sanctity. Conservation and protection of environment and love for nature have alwaysbeen part and parcel of Indian ethos and culture.

Independent India has traveled a long way on the path of progress and industrialization inorder to achieve better quality of life. We have accelerated the process of development withoutconsidering the adverse impact on nature and environment. The development without care forenvironment has posed threats to the very existence of life itself.

Now the realization that mere progress and economic development cannot solve all ourproblems has increased. Development and environment should go hand in hand. Sustainabledevelopment is the new paradigm.

The Ministry of Environment and Forests has drawn many programmes and policies tocombat these problems. Steps are being taken to preserve the pristine eco-systems through

establishment of Wildlife Sanctuaries, National Parks and Biosphere Reserves. More and newerareas are being brought into-the protected areas status. At the same time, steps havebeen ·taken for welfare of the forest people, particularly the tribals, who have lived in the forestsfor centuries and who are also repository of traditional knowledge on conservation andsustainable utilization.

The National Museum of Natural History is an important institutional tool for spreadingawareness on the evolution of our Universe and life on it. It has played a strong and active rolein creating environmental awareness. I am happy to say that the Museum has been active increating such awareness through a number of educational programmes, exhibitions, naturecamps etc. for more than two-and-a-half decades. Today, the Museum and its RegionalCentres are recognized as the centres for non-formal environmental education. It is indeed apleasure for all of us to be celebrating the 25th Year of the Foundation of the Museum.

I am happy to see that a number of children have participated in various activities of theMuseum. These activities will help all of you in developing a sense of environmentalresponsibility, which is so essential in our every day life. It is the absence of this responsibilitywhich is causing problems on our streets, residential areas, market places and other publicplaces. This leaves you all - responsible citizens of tomorrow, with a great burden to shoulder. But I am confident that you have the capacity not merely of shouldering this burden but alsoinfluencing people much older to you in following environmental discipline.

I wish the officers and staff of National Museum of Natural History the very best in theirfuture endeavour.

I would like to thank and congratulate Prof. Yash Pal who has delivered his Key-note on therelevant theme. We need such scientists who could contribute to spread scientific temperamong masses which will eventually lead to betterment of their lives and better understanding ofthe delicate web of life that exists on this only planet known to sustain life.

I congratulate the winners of Awards for Prevention of Pollution, Rajiv Gandhi Award forClean Technology and Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar. The awardees for the best originalwritings in Hindi on environmental issues also deserve my special appreciation for their efforts inpopularization of environmental issues in the official languages. There is dearth of suchliterature in the regional languages. The Ministry will encourage other regional languages alsowhich will help to take the environmental message to the grass root levels, across the country.

I am personally grateful to our Hon‟ble Vice President, Thiru. Shekhawatji to have acceptedthe invitation to grace the occasion. I know that he is keenly interested in the issues related toenvironment. His own State of Rajasthan is an example of all climate adversities, yet you cansee maximum vibrancy of all forms of life that exist there including those of fellow citizens.

Before I conclude, I would like to appeal to everyone for committing to follow the path ofsustainable development in right earnest.

The International Coffee Organization was established in 1963 stemming from aneffort by the United Nations to stabilize fluctuating coffee prices. Its originalpurpose was to keep coffee prices level and predictable which would provide acertain amount of security for coffee farmers. However, over time its purposeshifted and today its mission is “to bring together producing and consuming

countries to tackle problems in the world coffee sector and to make practicalcontributions to the coffee industry.” This mission can be further broken downinto four components: generally regulating the coffee market, generally improvingthe coffee market, promoting sustainable coffee farming, and improving thestandard of living for coffee farmers. The International Coffee Organization hasput a lot of effort into each of those areas, and while there is still room forimprovement, the organization‟s efforts have proved largely successful. Today the International Coffee Organization, or ICO, consists of 77 members: 45exporting countries and 32 importing ones. These countries are mainly located inSouth America, North America, Europe, the southern half of Africa, and southern

Asia. Together these countries account for 97% of coffee production and 80% ofcoffee consumption. The ICO meets twice a year and although privatebusinesses are not allowed to speak during the meetings, as the ICO hostsseparate forums where they can voice their concerns, they are allowed to attendthem. The point of the ICOs meetings is to settle disagreements, approve orchange the annual budget, and address concerns regarding the currentInternational Coffee Agreement, or ICA. The ICA is a compilation of regulationsthat help the ICO achieve its mission. When updating the ICA, the organizationrequires either at least two thirds of exporting countries and two thirds ofimporting countries approval or 70% total approval.
