Cellular Communications & telecom tower

Cellular network Cellular network with black spots Due to lack of towers

Telecom tower enables operators to provide network connection to mobile users

Page 6: Environment

Powering the telecom network

A Telecom tower on an average requires 12 kw of electricity per hour for 2 operators

Energy needs of a tower are currently met in India through

Electricity Mains

Diesel Generator

Battery Racks

Page 7: Environment

Electricity and Diesel Consumption

Electricity supply is erratic and is not available through out 24 hours in many parts

Diesel Generators (DG) are used to power the telecom network, as a back up for power supply

DG sets are operational for an average of 8-10 hours in rural India and 3- 5 hours in urban India, contributing to environmental and noise pollution

One liter of diesel consumed emits 2.6 kg of CO2

There is also high cost of transportation of fuel

Power consumption by telecom network is a contributor to carbon emissions and global warming

Telecom Industry & Carbon emissions

By 2020 energy use related to mobile networks will make up 13 percent of the total ICT carbon footprint (Source: Climate Group)

Appprox 0.14 per cent of global CO2 emissions are due to mobile telecoms- (Source: Ericsson)

India is expected to have 450,000 towers with 900,000 tenancies by FY 13E (Source: Industry estimates)

These towers are expected to consume 2.5 – 3 bn litres of Diesel and 14 Bn Kwh of electricity per year (Source: Industry estimates)

The telecom industry is expected to generate 25 million MT of CO2 emissions (Source: Industry estimates)

Global Group is committed to lower the industry’s carbon footprint and contribute to the cause of Greener

Global Group is expected to save about 530,000 MT of

CO2 emissions by FY 13

• per site for a year for a GBT of 50m shared by 2 operators• each KWH contributes 0.82 kg of CO2 and one liter of Diesel consumption emits 2.6 kg of CO2

Other benefits of sharing on Environment

Sharing of towers* saves utilization of precious natural resources like

Steel (approximately 10 MT per tower)

Cement, Concrete

Electrical equipment

Galvanization (500 kg of Zinc per 10 MT tower)

Land & Soil conservation

Improves the aesthetics of the surroundings by improving the Skyline

Huge and significant CAPEX savings on passive infrastructure by the operators

*Assuming a sharing by 2 operators, with a GBT tower of 50 mt

Sharing brings in efficiency and contributes to Greener Environment

Page 14: Environment

Commitment towards Environment

Global group is engineering energy management solutions that aim to reduce energy consumption by 20% and significantly reduce OPEX cost of each tower site

Reduction in energy consumption will reduce CO2 emissions and thus reduce the carbon footprint of the Indian telecom industry

The Group is investing over Rs 1400 Crores in energy management solutions

Global Group is committed towards Reduction in Carbon emissions and Greener environment
