Fiber Reinforced Polymers
The composite material consists of high strength
and elasticity modulus fiber and binder - matrix.
The base of matrix can be polymer, metal or
ceramic.
In industry, polymeric matrix is the most
commonly used therefore composite materials are
so often regarded as Fiber Reinforced Polymers
(FRP).
In fiber reinforced polymers the main load is taken
by the reinforcing fibers which are resistant to
harmful environmental factors such as high
temperature, humidity, UV rays etc. It is very
important that the polymer, which is reinforced
with fibers, would also have these characteristics,
therefore the matrix, which combines fiber, is
supplemented with specific additives, which
provide resistance to these environmental effects.
In industry, the most commonly used fibers are
glass, carbon, aramid, boron, basalt, etc. and the
matrix is formed of epoxy, polyester, vinyl ester or
other resins.
Depending on the environment in which fiber
reinforced polymer will be used, there are
determined properties which FRP product must
satisfy.
A lot of complex technological decisions must be
made in order to make sure that FRP product
meets all the requirements: fiber and matrix ratio
setting, selection of appropriate components,
selection of fiber structure and its arrangement in
a product, selection of suitable additives and other
not less important decisions affecting the final
product properties..

Pultrusion Technology
Pultrusion is manufacturing technology based on
a continuous manufacturing process in which:
� product reinforcing fibers are impregnated
with thermo-active resin;
� product geometry is formed by supplying
impregnated fiber to pre-heated form through
pre-forms;
� resin curing takes place in form – in
thermoactive resins polymerization process
proceedes;
� formed profile is cooled and cut.
Pultruded profile features:
� product withstand high axial loads; low density
– therefore materials strength - weight ratio is
far superior than steel;
� resistance to harmful environmental impacts;
profiles are nonconductive to electric current,
do not disturb electromagnetic waves and does
not change properties when are exposed to
electromagnetic field; low temperature effects
– products show increased dimensional
stability over a wide temperature range;
� high thermal resistance - thermal conductivity
more than 100 times less than steel;
� extremely simple transportation, processing
and assembly.

Section is made from fiberglass reinforced
polymers using the most advanced manufacturing
technology, allowing full use of this type of
material properties.

Fiber-reinforced polymers as steel substitute for
reinforcement of the concrete started to be used
due to some steel specific features that might have
negative influence on maintenance of the buildings
made of reinforced concrete. One of such features,
which seems being essential is steel’s low corrosion
resistance. With respect to proportion of the price
and physical-mechanical performance, fiber-glass
reinforced polymers are meant as best choice for
concrete reinforcement.
