The Bismarck High School Choir Department just completed a successful Concert on October 9th in the

BHS Knaak Auditorium. This was the debut performance of our incoming Freshman Choir, this year’s

Men’s Ensemble, and Women’s Choir, and the BHS Concert Choir. Music was prepared from several time

periods and each choir represented the BHS Music Department well. We also hosted the Wachter Middle

School 8th Grade Choir under the direction of Desiree Bondley. At the end of the concert we closed the

evening with a Mass Choir made up of the BHS Concert Choir, Freshman Choir, and the WMS 8th Grade

Choir.

Shortly after the concert, Concert Choir walked to the ND Heritage Center to sing in the Northern Lights

Atrium. We had prepared and performed a piece by Ola Gjielo entitled Northern Lights. We were able to

perform the piece (along with a couple of other selections) and do a Facebook Livestream from the ND

Heritage Center. Currently the Facebook livestream has over 3,000 views. If you are interested in watching

Sources of Strength Club Continues to Spread

Hope, Help, and Strength

Sources of Strength is a school organization with a mission to provide high

quality prevention for suicide, violence, substance abuse and risky behaviors by

training, supporting, and empowering peer leaders and caring adults. It is a

strength-based program where students are encouraged to host positive activities,

create videos, display art, put on presentations, and, in general, think creatively

to spread hope, help, and strength messages to their classmates.

We kicked off the year with a training day on October 6th, filled with interactive

activities to help peer leaders (students) learn about the Sources of Strength

wheel, which includes family support, positive friends, mentors, healthy

activities, generosity, spirituality, medical access, and mental health. We jumped

right into a Thankfulness Campaign where peer leaders approached students at

lunch and asked them to name three things they were thankful for that day.

Studies show that this simple act can immediately brighten a person’s mood.

Our peer leaders then planned and executed a football tailgating event to

promote positive friendships. We served food, played games, and had a great

time socializing. Currently, we are working on a Halloween event where

students will deck out the library and provide activities (coloring to relax and

mazes to challenge the mind) and contests (costume contest with a photobooth

and pumpkin seed count contest). We love seeing the positive influence our

campaigns have on our school!

Junior News:

The state of North Dakota pays for all juniors to take the

ACT test one time. The counselors will meet with all

junior students prior to the State ACT test which will be

administered in March during school hours. During this

meeting time we will cover a variety of topics including:

registration for the ACT test, ACT/SAT testing, North

Dakota Scholars Program, ZAPS testing to prepare for

the ACT, and NCAA requirements. We also give every

junior student a copy of the Career Outlook and a junior

checklist from the Bank of North Dakota. Students will

be encouraged to use the RUREADYND.COM resource,

specifically TESTGEAR, to help them with ACT

preparation.

The ACT test will be given to all juniors on

Tuesday, March 20, 2018.

Freshman & Sophomore News:

Freshmen and their parents received an invitation

to Bismarck High School this summer to meet with

their counselor. Counselors discussed the

transition from middle to high school and answered

any questions or concerns.

Recently all freshmen and sophomores had the

opportunity to take the ASPIRE test. The ASPIRE

includes tests in English, math, reading, science

reasoning, and writing. ASPIRE is a great way to

prepare for the ACT.

Sophomores will be given an interest inventory in

December using RUREADYND.COM prior to

registration for next year’s classes. They will be

encouraged to use their interest inventory results to

help them select classes during the registration

process

Financial Aid Information Session

An upcoming event to mark on your calendars: Bismarck High School will host a Financial Aid Information

Session for seniors and their parents on Monday, October 30th or Monday, November 6th at 5:30 p.m. in the

multipurpose room at the Career Academy. This session will cover the Free Application for Federal Student Aid

(FAFSA) form plus other avenues of financial aid. Parents are encouraged to attend one of these sessions.

Senior News

All seniors have met individually with their assigned counselor this fall for their Senior Conference. During this

time several topics were discussed including: credits earned and required classes for graduation, second semester

schedules, current GPA and class rank, and plans for next fall. Seniors completed their graduation diploma card

so their diploma can be ordered. Several hand-outs on financial aid and college planning were also given to

seniors. In addition, counselors encouraged seniors to visit the college(s) they are planning to attend. Seniors are

allowed two school days total for college visits and need to check in the Attendance Office prior to leaving for

their visitation. Seniors were also given a handout on tips for setting up and making the most of their college

visit.

College Application day was held on October 17th. Seniors were given the opportunity to apply to one North

Dakota University and the Bank of ND covered the $35 application fee.

ACT or SAT?

Almost all colleges, including many technical schools, require a college-entrance test as part of the

admission process. These college entrance test results are used along with grade point average and class

rank to help predict college success. Most often it is not necessary for students to take both the ACT and

the SAT. Most schools will accept scores from either of the tests but if in doubt, students should check with

the school that they wish to attend to determine test preference.

The ACT has four basic sections (English, math, reading, and science reasoning) plus an optional

section on writing. Students receive a score for each subtest and a composite, or average, score which is

computed from each of the four main subtests. The four basic subtests and the composite score range from

1 to 36. The writing subtest ranges in value from 2 to 12. Students should decide whether to take the ACT

Writing test based on the admission policies of the postsecondary institution that they hope to attend.

Students may register online at www.actstudent.org. The SAT is comprised of three scores: critical reading, math, writing, and an optional essay section.

Students receive a score between 200 and 800 on each of the three areas. Schools will often refer to the

SAT as one score which is the combined total of the subtest scores. The SAT writing score includes

multiple choice questions on grammar and usage and a student-written essay on a defined topic. Students

may register online at www.collegeboard.com. Students may take the ACT or SAT as many times as they

choose. Colleges will look at the highest set of scores. It is recommended that students take the ACT or

SAT at the end of their junior year. This provides an opportunity for students to retake the test as seniors, if

necessary. Fee waivers may be available for financially needy families. See your counselor for more

information.

Remember that all juniors will take ACT in March at no cost. The subsequent tests are as follows.

Test dates and registration deadlines are as follows:

Bismarck High School Code: 350-158

Basic Fee for ACT: $46.00 / ACT with writing fee $62.50

ACT Plus Writing: $56.50

Job Shadow Week and Other Career Exploration Opportunities for BHS Students What do you want to be when you grow up? This is an age-old question, but as students march through their

high school years, it becomes a critical decision that often weighs heavily on their minds. One way a student

can approach this decision with confidence is to engage in career research by participating in a Job Shadow

experience.

A Job shadow experience can help students:

Understand what employees in a particular job do;

See what daily routines and work activities are a part of this career;

Determine what is required in terms of education, training and skills, and

Learn more about future career potential with companies in the Bismarck-Mandan area.

Although juniors and seniors can participate in a job shadow experience any time throughout the year, please

take note of a special opportunity— Job Shadow Week—scheduled for next semester, February 12-18,

2018. Coordinated by Bismarck-Mandan Development Association, the 2017 Job Shadow Week event was a

huge success as 170 high school and college students took part in over 225 job shadows with 31 different

businesses in the community.

Students will receive further information about this wonderful opportunity, but please mark your calendar

now! In early January, students can expect more information about the specific two-or four-hour job

shadows offered by local employers, as well as how to participate in the online registration process.

Any 11th or 12th grade student interested in a job shadow opportunity should contact Laura Sturn, BHS

Career Advisor. As a reminder, Mrs. Sturn works with students in grades 9-12 to offer resources and help

navigate the career planning process throughout high school.

High points from anti-sexting meetings By Tamara Uselman, Superintendent of Schools

Learning together with parents is a powerful way to collaborate to protect our community’s

youth. At Bismarck Public Schools, we have come to see that student sexting, sharing of

nude photos, is an important community issue, one that will take all of us to solve.

October parent-community sessions on sexting were well-attended by elementary and

secondary parents. From conversations with high school Assistant Principal Lynette Johnson,

School Resource Officer Josh Brown, and other panelists, here are some important things to

know:

A tremendous amount of school resource officer (SRO) time is spent investigating sexting related reports. In other words, sexting is occurring frequently among BPS students.

Sexting is a sign that young people are not recognizing unhealthy relationships.

Social media preferences of youth change overtime. For example, Facebook is “out” and Snapchat is becoming the preferred method of communication among youth.

When communications are electronic vs. face-to-face, it’s easier to bully someone or ask for a nude photo.

Relationships in the teen years don’t last forever. When breakups are bad, a sexted photo shared during a time of trust may be distributed to others in the heat of the moment, as a method of striking back when the relationship ends.

Law enforcement who investigate reports see time stamps that show much of sexting and a high percentage of bullying occurs at night after the child has presumably gone to bed. It’s a good practice to have kids put their cell phones to bed in an area monitored by parents.

Parents have the right and responsibility to check their child’s cell phones, even if that child has purchased the phone on his/her own and pays the bill. Parents will want to know about apps built to “hide” photos from monitoring parents. Click here for information: https://drive.google.com/a/bismarckschools.org/file/d/0B-VPe9NKsVSUbWF1NU9rR3VyVkU/view?usp=sharing.

Parents should know that when a child gets a cell phone, that child now has contact with and can be contacted by the outside world, including bad people who lure minors.

Parents are wise to have an ongoing conversation with children about responsible use of technology and the consequences of having nude photos on their cell phones. There is great pain for all when a child’s nude photo is shared widely across the internet, as well as when a child is investigated as a potential sex offender or a distributor of pornography.

SRO Josh Brown says, “Kids who are sexting aren’t your usual troubled kids. In many cases

its top academic students or star athletes.” It can happen to your child. No one is immune to

this trend to be “popular” by sexting nude photos to others. Teach your child to “just say no!”

BHS Assistant principal Lynnette Johnson says, “I tell students to assume I will see what they

post. They never think that someone else will see it, especially not school administrators, law

enforcement, or their parents.” This is good advice that parents can also give their children!

The internet is a super-highway of information. Our goal is to work with parents and students

to keep students “safe on the road”. If you’d like to watch a video of one of the anti-sexting

sessions held in October, go to www.bismarckschools.org under News and Headlines under

the photo.

Winter weather reminders If school is closed due to winter weather, we try to make a decision by 5 am and communicate that through all local news media, our BPS web page (www.bismarckschools.org), social media, and directly to parents via phone, email and text, though phone may take longer. Once school begins, we do NOT close school unless directed to do so by authorities. Parents can use their judgement as to whether students should attend school or be picked up/let out early on such days.
