Dear Parishioners, What a contrast we celebrate today! We celebrate the tremendous greeting which Jesus received from the crowd as he entered Jerusalem. “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” The word “Hosanna” is the Greek translation of the word “hosa-na,” which means “save, please.” The crowd had greeted Jesus with the words from Psalm 118, verses 25-26; “O Lord, grant salvation! O Lord, grant prosperity! Blessed is he

who comes in the name of the Lord; we bless you from the house of the Lord.” Yet one wonders if the same crowd which greeted Jesus so warmly and enthusiastically might have been part of the same crowd which cried out for His crucifixion. Just as the execution of convicted criminals has unfortunately become so common today, it was the same in Jesus’ day. In Israel 2,000 years ago, it was widely known that those who rebelled against the Roman Empire would be put to death by crucifixion. In Jerusalem of Jesus’ day, it probably was not rare to see someone carrying his own cross before his death. So you wonder, while there were those who jeered Jesus as He carried His cross, while there were those who cried for Him, might there also have been many more who just went on with their business, not even interested in what was going on in the streets of Jerusalem? Let us show not only our interest but also our love for Our Lord by doing our best to participate in the special liturgies for Holy Week. Let us come together this week to worship the Lord as we celebrate His faithful love. In the Word,

There will be no religious education classes for Grades 6-8 on April 1 and for Grades K-5 on April 4. Classes will resume on April 8 and 11. Our last classes for the year will be held on Wednesday, April 15, and Saturday, April 18. The oldest/only child in each family from Grades K-7 will bring home from their last class an envelope which will contain second semester progress reports, registration materials for the 2015/2016 school year, and a registration form for Vacation Bible School. Families who have an outstanding tuition balance for

2014/2015 will also receive a tuition statement and are asked to pay the remainder of their tuition at this time. Families are also reminded that there is a financial advantage to registering and paying for the 2015/2016 religious education classes by June 1, 2015. Thank you to the seventh graders who presented a Living Stations of the Cross to the sixth and eighth graders on Wednesday, March 18. To see more pictures from that presentation, please visit the What’s New section of the parish website st-phil.org. The staff, volunteers, and students in the Religious Education would like to wish everyone a most blessed and Happy Easter.

What is the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick? Many of us know it as “last rites” or extreme unction, terms which may be more familiar and self-explanatory. Most people probably believe it is the sacrament that is only administered when a person is near death. However, the Anointing of the Sick is not just for our transition from this

life to the promised life eternal when God calls us home. The purpose of this beautiful rite is to give us the peace and healing that God bestows on us through the Holy Spirit, providing solace and strength during the times in our lives when we are ailing in mind, body, and spirit. In essence, it is one of the Sacraments of Healing, along with the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The difference between them is that in Reconciliation we reunite with God by confessing the sins we have committed. Through our acts of penance and contrition and by resolving to avoid the sin, we unite with our brothers and sisters in the Church. We heal our relationships with the grace and strength that comes from God. The Anointing is a healing that is more of an inward movement. If we are facing illness—be it physical, emotional, or spiritual—this sacrament helps us realize that our suffering is united with the suffering Christ endured for our salvation. The grace and strength we receive from the Anointing helps to guide us to the peace of God—accepting His will for our lives, and trusting in His love through the workings of the Holy Spirit. These workings give us the patience and fortitude to move forward in our lives, confident that God is with us always. Similar to Reconciliation and the Eucharist, this sacrament may be received multiple times. Whenever you, a family member, or a friend is facing surgery, serious illness, or are having psychological issues, we encourage you to seek out the strength of God through this healing sacrament.

What more is there to say in response to the proclamation of the passion than, “Where do you stand?” The proclamation challenges us to stand with Jesus, which always takes us to our own passion and crucifixion every day of our lives. As we embrace each day our own dying to self, we witness to others that we have truly chosen to stand with Jesus. Source: 2015 Living Liturgy, Liturgical Press

Arise Jerusalem, welcome your King! Today we celebrate the triumphant arrival

of Jesus. How does this relate to us? Our hearts are the Jerusalem we live in, the place we welcome the King of our lives. The question we need to consider is, how long will he reign? Will his reign only last until next Friday when he suffers death on the cross, or will we be his subjects as he enters his glory on Easter Sunday when he rises from the tomb? Our Lenten practices are almost over. We are now challenged to continue the promises we made on Ash Wednesday—the promise we made to live a life that draws us closer to God. In doing so, we will become the creation he intended us to be, fully alive in the Light of His Love. I urge all of you to join in the celebration of our faith as we journey through the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus in the Triduum liturgy and to welcome into the family of God those in the RCIA program who have been preparing for this great feast since last September.

Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal 2015

If you have not made your contribution to the 2015 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal, please consider doing so via mail, on-line at jolietdiocese.org, or by

returning one of our Commitment/In-Pew Weekend envelopes at Mass. One pledge can make a difference, especially when combined with all of the other pledges made throughout the diocese. Please prayerfully consider providing your financial support to this Appeal. You can and will make a difference by “Extending God’s Mercy!” After our parish exceeds its CMAA goal of $61,980 in paid pledges, 65% of any additional funds are returned for use in our parish. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

ATTENTION ALL LITURGICAL MINISTERS! All Lectors, Altar Servers, and Extraordinary Ministers of Communion are asked to fill out a yellow ministry card for the next schedule that will begin on June 6. Please stop by the Vesting Room and pick one up. Even if you have no blackout dates, please submit a card so we know you are still interested in participating in Liturgical Ministry. You can either leave it in the slot, return it to Carol Schubert in the Parish Office, or e-mail [email protected] with your blackout dates for this schedule. The cards are due back by Friday, April 17. Thank you!
