Background of Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhari

• He was born on 1951, into middle class family in north of peninsular Malaysia(Kedah).

• His father’s work is breeding cow , while his mother just a housewife.

• Higher education – until Form 5 only .

• A whole lot of his knowledge and experience was gained through his own entrepreneurship experience during his youth time.

• He started help his father’s business by keeping and manage the bookkeeping.

•He also helped his mother sells vegetable and roti canai before go to school.

• He took over the business and start over by selling meats. He then move on to packaging the meats and start selling them wholesale. His determination paid off and the business started to take off.

• He is a Patriotic person . He drives a Perdana instead of driving other

luxury cars .His effort in supporting local student in

pursuing their study.

• He is religious person.He donated a lot of his profit to build a lot of

mosque.Donated toward orphan and people who needed

help.

•He is a very hardworking person.Work from day till night

•He is also a generous person .He gives scholarship to 1000 Saudi Arabian

student to study in Malaysia.

•He is very low profile person. He doesn’t like to go public or being

published in the media.

The Success Story of Syed Mokhtar1. He was involved in his Father’s business

(breeding cow).2. The business was washed away as the

cows were infected by mouth and foot disease.

3. He quickly moved to other business (involving in logistic business , with initial goal to transport their trading materials).

The Success Story of Syed Mokhtar5. Syed Mokhtar started his real business in the southern Malaysia,

selling and distributing rice.

6. He worked even harder after awarded the rice trading licenses from Lembaga Padi Negara, and was later awarded successions of supplier contract government-linked corporations.

7. He currently holds a share in Mining Corporation Berhad (MMC), Bernas, Malakoff Berhad, Johor Port Berhad, Impian Teladan Sdn Bhd and many more others.

8. He focuses his work on philanthropist's work and is passionate with his charity foundation under the name of Al-Bukhary Foundation.

Al-Bukhary Foundation• Albukhary Foundation is a strong advocate of promoting

education

• Al-Bukhary Foundation helped to build Islamic Art Museum valued at RM70 millions.

• Some 350 students from almost 50 countries have been given scholarships to study in Malaysia, mostly at the International Islamic University Malaysia.

• Syed Mokhtar is currently spearheading the Albukhary International University, which is being built at the sprawling Sharifah Rokiah Centre of Excellence in Kedah

Al-Bukhary Foundation

•Sharifah Rokiah Centre of Excellence, which provides for Malaysians of all races and religions a whole range of facilities, including a mosque, medical centre with large dialysis facilities, community centre, orphanage, old folks' centre and the Albukhary International University.

•The Albukhary foundation is proof that a fusion between business and charity is not only possible, but also complementary and essential. Indeed, the foundation is a model to be emulated and an insipiration to all Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

RECOGNITION• He was bestowed with several awards. which

among others, include the Panglima Setia Mahkota P.S.M. by His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong, which carries the title Tan Sri and the Dato' Setia Mahkota Kedah D.S.D.K. by HRH The Sultan Kedah, which carries the title Dato'.

• In January 2008, Syed Mokhtar was honored as the recipient of the Tokoh Maal Hijrah 1429. And owing his success to his mother’s teachings, he decided to give the cash award of RM80,000 to his mother, Sharifah Rokiah Syed Mohamed Rahmat.

CHARITY• Charity began at home, literally. That was a long time ago - in 1974 -

when, as a struggling young cattle trader in Kedah, he brought home to his mother his first profit.

• His philanthropic values were nurtured from the age of 23 when he started a small business dealing in rice.

• Grateful, his mother Sharifah Rokiah Syed Mohamed Rahmat, suggested that they donate part of it to their poor neighbours, thus sowing the seeds of charity that would later lead to the billion- ringgit Yayasan Albukhary.

• He received his first monthly income of RM1,500, his mother had told him to donate half of it to the poor.

• From 1996 to 2006, his foundation has contributed almost RM1bil to charity.

CHARITY

•He has humanitarian projects in Asia and Africa, including rebuilding the lives of Afghan refugees, Pakistan's ear's tsunami victims and is now working to establish an AIDS hospital in Uganda.
