About the Production

About the Production:

Method in Madness is a piece of new writing, set in 1941 during the height of World War II in Blitz-struck London. It follows an American actress preparing to make her West-End debut as Ophelia in a staging of Hamlet.

In the rehearsal room, despite the efforts of her director and co-actors, the actress struggles to connect to the famous character. Homesick and torn between assuming her character and comforting her own mother overseas she desperately turns to method acting for salvation. However the boundaries between theatre and reality quickly blur and amongst the bombs and sirens of the Blitz the Hollywood starlet gives the performance of her life.

Method in Madness fuses Shakespearean text and new writing, told through thrilling physical theatre, stunning dance sequences and beautiful mask/puppetry work, framed by three dynamic set-piece mirrors that form strong visual stage imagery to demonstrate the changing environments of the piece alongside the performers. The production draws its powerful soundtrack solely from the hauntingly powerful music of celebrated British singer-songwriter Laura Marling.

The production is Entita’s most successful to date and has been performed at several arts festivals including the International Youth Arts Festival, Catford-Upon-Avon Festival, Kingston Connections Festival of Stories and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It was awarded “Best of Fest” at IYAF in 2014 and was shortlisted for the National Student Drama Festival the following year.

When a young Hollywood starlet struggles to connect with Shakespeare's Ophelia she desperately turns to method acting for salvation. Soon the boundaries between theatre and her own reality become blurred and amongst the bombs and sirens of Blitz-struck WWII London her stunning portrayal quickly becomes the performance of her life.

Method in Madness fuses both Shakespearean text and new writing with stunning physical theatre and extraordinary dance, soundtracked by the haunting music of Laura Marling. The production explores the pressure upon all actresses who tackle one of Shakespeare’s most enigmatic female characters whilst presenting the associated dangers of taking method acting too far. The play also highlights the rarely-hailed defiance of British theatre against the efforts by Nazi bombers to demoralise and divide a nation.
