Executive Summary

As adoption for Internet of Things solutions accelerates worldwide, Low Power Wide Area Network

(LPWAN) technologies are enabling unique smart building applications as well as new enterprise IoT

services. LPWAN technologies are disrupting existing wireless sensing and M2M technologies with

$10 LPWAN radios that are capable of ten-mile ranges with 10-year battery lifetimes. But the

distinct advantage of LPWANs over incumbent wireless technologies is that end node complexity is

off loaded to the cloud, simplifying installation, maintenance, application development and system

integration.

Ten years ago when ON World published its first report on smart building wireless sensor networks

(WSN), WSN was a disruptor of wired sensor networks and from this came mesh standards such as

ZigBee, Thread and now Bluetooth Smart Mesh. While these technologies are not likely to be

replaced for the majority of traditional smart building applications, they are vulnerable to being

displaced by LPWANs. Wireless mesh challenges include long product development cycles,

expensive gateways, complex network management and many of these technologies were created

before the cloud infrastructure was mature enough to build a business model around.

LPWAN solutions and network deployments are growing rapidly. Standards developments have

hundreds of participating companies in initiatives and industry groups such as the LoRa Alliance,

SigFox Partner Network, Weightless SIG, ETSI LTN, 3GPP NB-IoT and GSMA’s Mobile IoT.

By 2025, there will be nearly 1 billion connected wireless sensors, asset trackers and other smart

devices for building automation and enterprise IoT solutions. LPWAN will be the fastest growing

wireless technology and will make up the majority of new applications and services over the next

decade.

Advancing Enterprise IoT Solutions

By simplifying application development and network management across large areas with many

locations, LPWANs have much potential for integrated enterprise IoT solutions. While many

organizations focus on reducing a building’s energy footprint and complying with intensifying

regulations, enterprise IoT reflects a vision for integrated, multi-application systems that extend

beyond energy efficiency. For example, traffic flow in and around buildings, asset management

and monitoring as well as noise and air pollution, waste management and public safety are all

likely to be part of the IoT connected enterprise of the future.

Our survey found that the most commonly planned wireless enterprise IoT applications are

environmental, asset management and smart lighting. In addition, current users of energy

management systems are most interested in integrations such as security/safety, space utilization,

proximity sensing and asset tracking.

Figure 2: Planned Wireless Enterprise IoT Applications

While LPWAN technologies will not displace all smart building wireless sensing and tracking

technologies, they are particularly suited to enterprise IoT services that for operational

efficiencies, quality workplace environments as well as safety and security.

Some of the key LPWAN applications for building and other enterprise services include the

following:

Energy efficiency monitoring

Access control and security system monitoring

Tracking and monitoring mid-low valued assets

Smart buttons for automating services and business workflows

A Growing Ecosystem

System integration is one of the biggest challenges today for smart buildings. LPWAN technologies

built in web architectures, high in-building penetration and low gateway to node ratios gives

developers an easier wireless sensor integration path. The fact that these new LPWAN standards do

not have alliances with agreed upon application profiles is both a disadvantage and an advantage.

It makes it harder to integrate non cloud based products, but since the LPWAN application

interfaces are primarily in the cloud they are much easier to upgrade, customize and create new

services around without having to go through lengthy alliance adoption cycles.

Companies involved with LPWAN technologies are addressing different aspects of this challenge

such as the following:

Cumulocity’s software platform provides open APIs to streamline IoT application

development and IT system integration.

Intent Technologies provides a digital software platform for collecting and sharing smart

building information from multiple sources including LoRa and SigFox wireless sensors.

relayr provides an open development and integration platform that provides connectors

between sensors, software and services.

SmartSensor Labs is creating a LoRa smart campus solution that integrates data collected

from outdoor smart city sensors as well as sensors installed in buildings.

ON World’s April 2016 survey with 100 IoT professionals found that 59% are researching, pilot

testing or developing LPWAN solutions. Two in five are developing new LPWAN solutions that

cannot be done with other wireless technologies and one third are targeting existing applications

that use other wireless techologies.

Figure 3: Researching/Developing LPWAN Solutions

In this report, we analyze and forecast the LPWAN market opportunity for 7 enterprise IoT

application areas across ten market segments, evaluate 60+ companies with LPWAN-related

products and services, present the results of our Q1 2016 survey, and show the findings from

several network tests to illustrate the capabilities of LPWAN technologies.
