Welcome LetterSCHEDULE OVERVIEW

A Warm New York Welcome to All Delegates

Jeremy GeelanConference Chair

Greetings and welcome to Summer in NYC!This month’s Conference is another great milestone for SYS-CON Events, or rather a set of milestones. It is the 13th time we have held our SOA World event, the 3rd time we have held our Virtualization Conference & Expo, and the fi rst time that we’ve held a DataServices World Summit.

Virtualization, like SOA before it, has quickly becoming a staple new concept for enterprise IT. At this year’s event we have exceptional speakers with high-quality use cases not only of how virtualization maximizes the use of resources and thus saves companies money, but also of how it is fundamentally altering the way that businesses run IT.

We have top SOA practitioners speaking too, and now that traditional middleware sys-tems are generally acknowledged not to meet modern IT and business requirements, they will leave you in no doubt that SOA’s time has truly come...and why.

With our DataServices Summit the focus is architectures and technologies for access-ing data from heterogenous data sources and providing that data to consumers such as components, services and applications.

Through the next two, content-packed days the emphasis will be on value and on confl uences, with a rich array of sessions about the business and technical value of the service-oriented approach (SOA World), the businesss and technical value of vir-tualization (Virtualization Conference), and the fast-emerging confl uence of databases, data warehousing, business intelligence, enterprise computing and Internet computing (Data Services World).

Whatever your background, we hope to widen your IT worldview over the coming days; plus we hope to inspire in you a sense of perspective and excitement about the future.

Please enjoy the event - and remember: that future is yours to seize!

Warm regards,

AppStream: Now Part of Symantec

The award–winning streaming technology of AppStream, now part

of Symantec, reduces administrative overhead, costs, maintenance,

and security concerns associated with managing applications and

software on multiple endpoints. Its pull–based, on–demand software

distribution platform combines the benefits of server-based comput-

ing (self–service access and centralized management and control)

and distributed PC computing (disconnected application use and

distributed processing), providing a ‘best of both worlds’ solution.

Software deployment and management via streaming is perfect for

remote delivery because it only provides the application functions

that an end-user needs, when those functions are needed, rather

than delivering the entire application unnecessarily in advance.

Applications become highly portable between machines and do not

conflict with each other or with pre–existing, conventionally–installed

software. For more information, visit www.appstream.com

A Composable Service Is a Good ServiceKYLE GABHART

Designing services well requires intentional application of design strat-egies and consistent utilization of service oriented principles. In this talk, Kyle Gabhart will explore one such principle of service orientation – the composable nature of services. One thing that distinguishes services from other distributed components is the ability to compose solutions. Service oriented solutions support this by aggregating ser-vice calls underneath higher-level services and orchestrating services into business processes. Although most service oriented practitioners will readily admit this is a goal, few realize this goal due to poor service design. This session explores the subject of service composition and provides practical guidance regarding how to design and work with composable services.

A Lightweight Approach to SOA and BPM in Java Using jBPMKOEN AERS

SOA is mostly associated with technologies such as BPEL, SCA and Web Services. But does SOA really imply these technologies? In this session we will show how you can use the service oriented approach while staying inside the Java world. jBPM is a powerful lightweight framework that can be used to orchestrate services in the broadest sense. It is highly extendable, very versatile and can be easily embedded in client and/or server applications. Attendees will learn how jBPM can be used in a pure workfl ow scenario as well as in a situation involving automated business steps.

A Social Registry - Bridging Technology and Community for SOAGLEN DANIELS

SOA is about people as much as technology. This talk will demonstrate how adding a layer of social (or “Web 2.0”) features - things like tags, comments and syndication feeds - to your SOA infrastructure can provide fertile ground to help grow a vibrant and connected community of developers, businesspeople and technologists. We’ll show you how a social registry/repository can enable both grass-roots development and CIO-pleasing governance, all with standard REST interfaces. And because we can directly connect SOA components and metadata with the human community creating them, the relationships of both the software and the people can be enriched.

Application VirtualizationBOB LOZANO

This session will focus on Application Virtualization with particular focus on achieving Web-scale. The session will compare and contrast external cloud deployment to internal deployment on commodity infrastructure.

Are You Applications vAvailable?JERRY MELNICK

At Marathon Technologies, we service a range of industries that must have their applications up and running at all times, or as we call it: vAvailable. vAvailable is the integration of virtualization and high availability technolo-gies to create a cost-effective solution that ensures applications won’t go down. With virtualization technologies, high availability has now launched well between today’s alternative solutions such as clustering. This session will defi ne vAvailable and this is a huge step between today’s alternatives. Mr. Melnick will discuss a new standard for application avail-ability using virtualization technology that embraces Windows and business process applications.

Avoiding a SOA Fiasco: An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth a Pound of CureJACEK KRUSZELNICKI

While SOA can deliver dramatic cost reduction of an organization’s business operations, it is a complex, multidisciplinary undertaking, and therefore introduces signifi cant risk. This session presents a list of the most important risk factors and ways to mitigate them BEFORE it is too late. The session will be of interest to anyone planning an SOA initative, primarily CIOs, Technical Managers, Project Directors and Technical Architects.

Best Practices for Multi-Site Data Center Relocation and ConsolidationJOHN STETIC

A common mandate in large organizations is to shrink the total number of data center sites in order to achieve new effi ciencies and economies of scale. Rapid growth, globalization, mergers and acquisitions often necessitate physical data center relocations or consolidations. The ability to effectively analyze, plan and execute multi-site data center relocations or consolidations is vital to large enterprises. Attendees will learn how the ability to decouple server workloads from the underlying hardware and move them over the WAN between any physical or virtual infrastructure enables fast and easy server and data center relocation and consolidation. Topics will include rapidly provisioning new servers, running new and old data center sites in parallel, and the importance of testing.

Beyond Virtual Machines: What’s Next for Virtualization?PETER MANCA

Virtualization has taken hold in the data center, addressing some of the most pressing issues customers face including excessive power and cooling, and low server utilization. But this is only the fi rst wave of virtualization and only addresses the server. What’s next? Enter “Virtualization 2.0,” where the benefi ts extend from capital cost reduction to lower operational expenses, improved service levels, agility and IT simplicity. This next wave virtualizes beyond the server, encompassing data center infrastructure (storage, networking and processing) to unbind applications from servers and create a fully agile data center. This session explores Virtualization 2.0 and what it will mean for bottom line business.

Bridging the Paradigms: Convergence of Enterprise Compute and Data GridsVICTORIA LIVSCHITZ

As computer grids are becoming more wide spread in commercial data centers, the bottlenecks in application performance move from raw processing to searching, storing and retrieving the data. In-Memory Data Grid (IMDG) technology solves this fundamental problem by acting as super-effi cient application accelerator, taking advantage of unused resources readily available on the grid – disk, memory, IO – to put the data in memory of the same computer that performs the calculations. The talk will explore how IMDG can be easily integrated with existing enterprise grids to create data-aware grid applications and provide application performance acceleration while improving application scal-ability and reliability.

Business Resiliency in Blended Physical/Virtual EnvironmentsALAN CHHABRA

While virtual machines continue to proliferate in enterprise data centers with great results, high-powered physical servers aren’t going away. Most enter-prise data centers are in fact “blended environments,” with some applica-tion services running on VMs, while often more mission-critical applications continue to run on physical servers. This session will explore approaches to manage both virtual AND physical servers in exactly the same fashion – creating truly resilient environments regardless of platform.

CEP - the Secret Weapon for SOA Application Performance ManagementRICH SCHREIBER

Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) can deliver tremendous value in fl ex-ibility, adaptability and cost savings. But SOA environments are complex by defi nition, with lots of loosely coupled components and a potentially vast combination of platforms, software, databases, applications and networks. One of the biggest challenges inherent in realizing the benefi ts of SOA is effectively managing all of these diverse components to ensure the high availability and performance of the applications running in them to meet crucial Service Level Agreements (SLAs). This session will explore Complex Event Processing (CEP) engines and offer practical insights into how CEP can be leveraged to enable rapid real-time problem cor-rection and predictive problem prevention that is vital to successful SOA implementations.

Consolidated Disaster Recovery Using VirtualizationJOHN STETIC

Traditional recovery infrastructures have failed to keep pace with requirements for recovery speed and integrity at a reasonable cost. Learn why organizations are now leveraging server virtualization to protect servers in their network that have commonly been left under-protected. Find out how workload protection technologies enable organizations to implement a disaster recovery plan that is more affordable and fl exible than traditional options, while improving testing and recovery time and point objectives (RTO and RPO).

Data Access and Data Services WorkshopMICHAEL GORMAN, DR. CARLO INNOCENTI, MIKE PIZZO, AND DR. MICHAEL CAREY

The workshop is a hands-on session focusing on data access and data services issues, problems and solutions. It’s an opportunity for audience members to view and discuss problems with a panel of experts. The goal of the session is to engage the audience using walk throughs, examples, and a question and answer (Q&A) session. The operative principles are interactivity and dialogue.

Data Services Modeling: Data Modeling in the SOA AgeDR. MICHAEL CAREY

Once upon a time data modeling played a central role in the process of devel-oping applications. Thus far in the SOA era, there has been a heavy emphasis on process, and data has all-too-often been lost in the SOA shuffl e. In this talk, we present a data model for SOA - i.e., a service-oriented data model. This model formalizes the notion of a data service, modeling data in SOA as a layer of interrelated data services. We explain the key components of this model, including a taxonomy of data service operation types, a mechanism for capturing the entities that the data services are “about”, and an approach to modeling relationships in SOA. The content of this talk is based on the data services model embodied in the BEA AquaLogic Data Services Platform (ALDSP), and the approach is based on lessons learned over a period of several years of working with data services and customer use cases.

maximize the use of their hardware systems. An often overlooked factor that can undermine this goal is data connectivity. 75 to 95 percent of the response time now associated with database access can often be attributed to the data connectivity layer — and that’s using traditional, non-virtualized servers. Running multiple virtual servers on a single machine can introduce additional complications involving data access. This presentation will examine the importance of data connectivity in a virtualized environment, and the need to take an intelligent approach to data access in order to truly reap the benefi t of a virtualization strategy.

Effective Planning for Virtual Infrastructure GrowthJOHN STETIC

As the adoption of virtualization technology in the data center increases, organizations are encountering new challenges associated with planning and managing rapid growth in virtual infrastructure. Without effective plan-ning and forecasting, organizations often fail to realize the full benefi ts of virtualization and achieve a sub par return on investment. After investing in virtualization, some organizations learn the hard way that they have merely replaced their physical server sprawl with a virtual sprawl. This session will discuss the important role of ongoing capacity and workload planning, forecasting and reporting in helping organizations successfully manage

future growth.

IT Security in a Hostile WorldDAVID KLEIDERMACHER

Computer systems manage and protect increasingly high value informa-tion and assets across the enterprise. Meanwhile, hackers grow in number and resourcefulness. Commercial virtualization solutions add to the already fertile attack surface of enterprise operating systems. Green Hills discusses the state of enterprise security threats and presents a secure operating environment that can guarantee the security of the world’s critical infrastructure, fi nancial systems, medical records, and corporate intellectual property. This solution uses technology adopted in the military and intelligence community to protect sensitive national secrets.

Essential Requirements for Storage Virtualization: Availability, Performance, and Data IntegrityMATT WAXMAN

Storage virtualization introduces a level of abstraction that sits between application servers and physical storage resources to provide centralized volume management and non-disruptive data mobility. These capabilities help storage managers improve productivity, capacity-utilization and service levels. Its unique position between application servers and storage resources demands the highest levels of availability, performance and data integrity. This session will review the benefi ts of virtualization and how it im-proves productivity, capacity utilization and service levels. It will also discuss how second generation, network based storage virtualization can be used to meet the demands imposed by its central position in the I/O stack.

Facelift Your SOA with Rich Internet ApplicationsYAKOV FAIN

We are entering an era of Rich Internet Applications (RIA) and enhancing the user experience of consumers of the services becomes an important part in designing and implementing SOA. But if you decide to develop rich clients, you’ll be facing the dilemma - which way to go - remain with tried and true Java or .NET or experiment with such newcomers as AJAX, Flex, Silverlight, or JavaFX. While the Internet brings a lot of noise where “it’s cool” is the most popular defi nition, this presentation is an overview of what’s out there on the enterprise RIA market. We’ll talk about the pros and cons of using various techniques and technologies for the development of the front end for complex SOA distributed systems.

Frontiers in Data Access: The Coming Wave in Data ServicesJOHN GOODSON

As SOA rapidly becomes the standard for enterprise architectures, the need for robust technologies for data access and data integration has become more critical then ever before. Due to the vital role that data plays both in business and systems operations, database architectures, information specialists, data integration experts, and anyone responsible for data per-sistence in an organization are increasingly being called upon to contribute to their organization’s SOA initiatives — whether or not this was intended at the onset. In this presentation, we will review the technologies, best practices, and patterns that are shaping the way we utilize enterprise data.

High Intensity Virtualization – Taking Your Virtualization Strategy to the Next LevelHARRY PETTY

With the rapid deployment of server virtualization technology in the data center, IT management is actively looking at optimizing their SAN storage architecture to reap the full benefi ts of their virtualization investment, such as workload mobility and disaster recovery, without running into I/O bottlenecks and unpredictable utilization of SAN resources that comes with a much more dynamic environment. This session will explore how Data Center Fabric enables virtual servers and physical servers to stand on an equal footing. It will also discuss capabilities specifi cally designed to support virtualized environments such as VMware ESX, Microsoft Hyper-V and Xen.

How the Delivery of Virtualization Is ChangingSIMON CROSBY

As virtualization becomes more widely deployed, and enterprises look for new ways to leverage this revolutionary technology, the consumption and delivery of this technology is changing. It is no longer one-size-fi ts-all and confi ned to a specifi c area of the data center, but instead is proliferating within the data center and out to the user via the desktop and applica-tions. This session will provide IT organizations with a short - and long - term roadmap by focusing on the new delivery models for virtualization (including embedded hypervisors and managed services), what’s available today and what can be expected in the future, and best practices for deployment.

How to Build a Cost-Effective Bulletproof Remote Virtual Desktop InfrastructureBILL SCARBOROUGH

With a remote workforce, either through offshoring business processes or remote home workers, it is essential to keep the data safe while providing the most fl exible computing experience. This session will discuss the strategies and pitfalls when building a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). It will discuss cost issues and help customers build a compelling Retrun On Investment through determinig the Total Cost of Ownership of a VDI imple-mentation. This session will also cover the strategic architecture and how to build a VDI Solution that will allow an Organization to reap the benefi ts of a remote workforce.

Hypervisor Breaches: Myths vs. RealityHEZI MOORE

There has been much speculation about the security posture of virtualized environments. One identifi ed vulnerability is the “hypervisor” threat in which a hacker can break out of a guest OS and onto the host OS of a server. How great a danger is the hypervisor threat? What security barriers should IT erect before and after they implement their virtual environment? Virtual security expert Hezi Moore will help attendees separate the virtualized wheat from the real chaff.

I/O Virtualization: Approaches and ApplicationsARIEL COHEN

I/O is a key element of server architecture, but its virtualization is only now starting to be addressed. Without I/O virtualization, the amount, type and physical connectivity of server I/O are all fi xed. In order to achieve true fl exibility in server usage, these fi xed resources must become dynamic. This enables an on-demand usage model for non-virtualized servers, including failover with shared spares, and server pool scaling. It is also an important complement to virtual machine technology, providing fl exible dedicated I/O pipes for virtual machines. This presentation will compare different ap-proaches to I/O virtualization and discuss the applications of the technology.

Implementing a Highly Distributed, Real-time Data-Critical SOA ApplicationGORDON HUNT

SOA implementations are increasingly reliant on streams of data that are time-critical, reliably delivered and sourced from mixed infrastructures in a highly distributed environment. Data formats, delivery mechanisms, fault tolerance capabilities and stateful semantics embedded in data are often inadequately considered when architecting and implementing large scale real-time SOA applications. This talk will introduce several real-time data-centric technologies that specifi cally address the challenges of wide-scale, real-time data distribution, as well as how these technologies seamlessly in-tegrate into existing SOA frameworks. Examples will be drawn from military and aerospace applications that are already seeing success with real-time, highly distributed SOA applications.

Introducing Automated Business Process Discovery: Step #1 to Process ImprovementKEITH SWENSON

In a recent study, CIOs ranked “improving business processes” as their #1 prior-ity for 2008. But the big question has always been - How does one get started with a BPM initiative? The traditional approach has been to engage external consultants and to dedicate signifi cant time and resources to map out how a company does business. Very often, the outcome is delayed and riddled with inaccuracies. Keith Swenson, Fujitsu’s Chief Architect, talks about Fujitsu’s new Automated Business Process Discovery Offering, that helps companies: • Quickly visualize existing business processes – in less than two weeks • Identify process bottlenecks, steps that get repeated, and “loop-backs” in processes • Pin point areas to focus your process improvement initiative on to demonstrate quick ROI

LINQ, Entity Framework and ADO.NET Data Services for the WebMIKE PIZZO

The new wave of Web applications are built on technologies such as AJAX and Microsoft Silverlight, which enable developers to build better, richer user experiences. These technologies bring a shift in how applications are organized, including a stronger separation of presentation from data. Technologies such as Language Integrated Query (LINQ) and ADO.NET En-tity Framework and Data Services simplify the job of developers. The ADO.NET Entity Framework raises the level of abstraction for data program-ming. It is the evolution of ADO.NET that allows developers to program in terms of the standard ADO.NET abstraction or in terms of persistent objects (ORM) and is built upon the standard ADO.NET Provider model. The Entity Framework introduces a set of services around the Entity Data Mod-el (EDM) (a medium for defi ning domain models for an application). The goal of ADO.NET Data Services is to enable applications to expose data as a REST-based data service that can be consumed by Web clients within a corporate network and across the Internet. The data service is reachable over HTTP, and URIs are used to identify the various pieces of information available through the service. Interactions with the data service happens in terms of HTTP verbs, such as GET, POST, PUT, and DELETE, and the data exchanged in those interactions is represented in simple formats, such as AtomPub and JavaScript Object Notation (JSON).

Making Sense of the BPM & SOA Standards Alphabet SoupKEITH SWENSON

What is BPEL? What is XPDL? How are they different? What is the best use for each? What is BPMN, and why should I care? Which of these are primarily designed to help IT at a technical level, and which help an organization at a business level? Amongst the fl urry of BPM and Web services standards that appear to overlap at times, there is a central core of important ones. This session, led by Keith Swenson, Fujitsu’s Chief Architect and Co-Chair of the Workfl ow Management Coalition Technical Committee (WfMC), is aimed at lending clarity to the fuzzy world of BPM and Web services standards and at explaining the benefi ts of investing in standards-driven solutions.

Managing Storage in the Virtual EnterpriseSEAN DERRINGTON

It’s no secret that data centers are faced with exponential storage growth, increasing operational costs, power and cooling limitations, and the need to provision and bring new applications online more rapidly to support critical business needs, many customers look to virtualization strategies to ease the management burden. SRM technology can address the demands and man-agement complexities that virtualization presents. Virtualization, by defi nition, can apply to operating systems, applications and storage arrays. This session will identify and elaborate on the various virtualization categories, and talk about how SRM technology can enable IT organizations to manage storage in the virtual enterprise.

Mathematical Innovations for Heterogeneous Data AccessDR. STEFANOS DAMIANAKIS

Working to achieve uniform data access across heterogeneous systems can be enormously challenging, and one particular problem that is often not identifi ed until a later stage is dealing with the natural variations and discrepancies that occur within the actual data. These data issues already exist in each individual data source and are magnifi ed when many heterogeneous (or even homogenous) sources are involved. Traditional solutions to the problem include using manual rules, probabilistic rules and even large amounts of meta data. But these traditional approaches are compute- and labor-intensive and require signifi cant guesswork and a-priori knowledge to implement. Mathematical modeling brings much-needed innovation to this problem by eliminating the guesswork and manual labor

of the traditional approaches. Those who attend this presentation will gain an understanding of: • How enterprises can leverage mathematical modeling to address their data access needs and get the most out of their corporate data• How mathematical modeling is different from traditional approaches and why it delivers higher accuracy, scalability and computational effi ciency that result in better decision-making abilities for organizations • Several real-world case histories of organizations that used mathematical modeling to solve their data access problems - after attempting rules-based solutions that failed them

Maximize Your Virtualization Payoff: There’s More Than You ThinkANDREW CONTE

Businesses that virtualize can increase effi ciency and reduce costs by eliminating low-performance/low-effi ciency servers. Less well-known, but equally important, is the parallel advantage of streamlining the legacy power and cooling systems that support virtualized environ-ments. This presentation will discuss how new power and cooling technologies and effective data center planning and design are saving additional electrical costs, sometimes even more than the original savings from virtualization. Learn how to help manage the complexities of a virtualized environment by answering the not-so-obvious questions “Where should I locate my next server?” and “Where should I migrate my applications to maximize effi ciency?

New Perspectives on Governance, Management, and Industry Standards in the Service-Oriented EnterprisePAUL LIPTON

Popular assumptions can often be dangerous. We will start by considering how the many unique architectural characteristics of SOA, such as loose-coupling, can actually be a two-edged sword affecting the requirements, nature and success of many important aspects of the architecture, especially runtime governance. In fact, the success of any SOA requires that one must gain an understanding of the true nature, performance characteristics and availability of the business transactions that fl ows in real-time through these highly distributed services and their supporting IT infrastructure. Although one may support these critical SOA functions using many different technologies and standards, there is no doubt that for most users today the popular WS-* standards will play a central role. We will conclude by considering how all of these standards might best work together to solve these real-world problems in your SOA. In the process, we will speculate upon some the strengths and weaknesses in the current Web services stack, the nature of the standards process and what trends might be most relevant to your own future success.

Real-Time VirtualizationTM for the Connected World: From Back-End Datacenters to Front-End DevicesMARK MILLIGAN

Today, many organizations hear the term virtualization and still only think of the technology used in a datacenter. While this might be where virtualization started and has received a lot of attention, the next wave of virtualization is happening in connected devices through embedded technologies. When applied, virtualization allows organizations and developers working with front-end connected devices such as mobile phones, set-top boxes and WiMax base stations, to experience business benefi ts such as reduced bill-of-material costs, faster time-to-market and richer, more functional designs that feature reduced power, improved security and greater reliability. One of the strongest business drivers for virtualization in the embedded space is connectivity - the more devices converge and require connection to something else, the more virtualization becomes an ideal solution. As a new frontier in virtualization, however, many questions still surround its application in embedded systems and the specifi c business benefi ts companies can expect to gain. This session will discuss the similarities and distinct differences of real-time virtualization for connected devices and traditional virtualization; look at the key benefi ts real-time virtualization brings to the embedded space, including high perfor-mance with a small memory footprint; and examine the biggest challenges companies face when implementing real-time virtualization and some best practices for overcoming them, including real world examples.

part of the Enterprise Architecture landscape. Before the term fades away completely, perhaps we should agree what’s valuable about the move to SOA and how to make the leap, and make the leap valuable. OMG’s SOA Consortium is making great strides in defi ning SOA to be a valuable business strategy for business agility, taking advantage of Enterprise Archi-tecture, Business Process Management and other concepts; and the OMG itself is making headway on modeling standards for services (as opposed to yet another set of standards for moving bits around wires).Dr. Soley will introduce the SOA Consortium and give some context for OMG’s work in service modeling. He will also share some of the experience gained from the SOA Consortium’s Summit discussions with CIO’s, CTO’s and Chief Enterprise Architects who have results to share from refocusing their lines of business around recognizable, reusable and optimizable business processes

Secure Virtualization and Its Emerging ApplicationsDAVID KLEIDERMACHER

The motivations for system virtualization technology in the data center are well known, including resource optimization and improved service avail-ability. But virtualization technology has broader applications throughout the enterprise, including security-enabled mobile devices, virtual appliances, secure servers, personal/corporate shared use laptops, and more. The se-curity requirements for some applications exceed that provided by general purpose virtualization solutions designed for the server environment. Our presentation will provide an overview of hypervisor architectures and how they affect the security and practicality of system virtualization in a broad range of compelling applications.

Service Oriented Unifi ed ProcessCHRIS SHAYAN

Service orientation is one of the most popular trends of these recent years, but there are not any metrics on it. Hence you can not consume SOA in a project with a specifi c measuring. On the other side, Unifi ed Process (espe-cially RUP) has powerful abilities on such developments. In our discussion Chris Shayan is going to demonstrate that we can combine SOA and RUP with each other and fi nally make a Service Oriented Unifi ed Process.

SOA and the Internet: An Architectural ViewMIKO MATSUMURA

Exploring the boundaries between the Enterprise and the Internet, this talk focuses on Architectual approaches from the service pattern, process pattern and event pattern to help SOA practitioners understand topics such as Web 2.0, AJAX, SaaS, Social Networks and how they connect with the Enterprise. The emerging patterns of architecture can enable the savvy architect to empower their IT to embrace an accelerating vision of the network economy.

SOA and Virtualization: Friend or Foe?CHRIS WIBORG

Depending on your perspective, SOA and virtualization are either synergistic or threaten increased complexity. This session will explain how implement-ing the right network architecture can make the most of both, promoting agility and reducing complexity. “Service virtualization” takes functionality that is common across applications and generalizes and leverages it across the business. Capabilities like multicast, encryption, load balancing and data caching – traditionally applications on dedicated servers – have migrated into the network, where they can be virtualized and shared by multiple applications delivered to end users across multiple devices. Attendees will learn how the right network architecture can support strategies like Web 2.0 and SOA, and how the network can reduce complexity and management costs, enhance system resiliency and fl exibility, and improve usage and effi ciency of networked assets and applications.

SOA Management Fundamentals and Best PracticesAL AGHILI

Development of service-oriented environments is an evolutionary process for organizations of all sizes. The architecture and design decisions made by system architects and developers will impact manageability and fl exibility of service infrastructures. Effi cient management of loosely-coupled services requires implementing practices to enable visibility, fl exibility and automa-tion of service operations. Questions to be answered in this session:

• What architectures are common for service deployment and integration?• How can services be built for manageablility?• Why is operational visibility essential for SOA management?• How does SOA Management fi t into SOA Governance?

Storage Virtualization, the Key to Unlock Tomorrow’s Data CenterHUBERT YOSHIDA

As data growth rates continue to climb and business requirements further evolve, customers are feeling the pressure to realign their storage infra-structure to better meet the needs of their business. Mr. Yoshida will discuss how storage virtualization is the key enabler towards the storage-based services required to deliver substantial breakthroughs in effi ciency and business agility across the entire enterprise. He will discuss how storage-based services such as thin provisioning, content and fi le management and dynamic data migration, enabled via controller-based Virtualization, are paving the way for the Dynamic Data Center of tomorrow.

Taking Virtualization to the Next Level: The Virtualized Data Center AudiencePHIL MORRIS

Today, it is not uncommon to narrow the general defi nition of virtualization down to just servers or possibly servers and storage. In this session learn how a total virtualization solution should encompass a much larger range of capabilities and entities. The ultimate goal of virtualization is to increase the utilization and effi ciency of your current infrastructure. To that end, one should consider virtualizing the entire data center, including the traditional servers and storage, but also bringing in networking, cable management, power manage-ment, cooling/airfl ow capabilities, etc. This allows for extreme fl exibility and agility in terms of managing the infrastructure to the point of being able to roll in and out entire racks of equipment without needing an electrician to add power outlets, without adjusting tile placement for airfl ow, without pulling extra cable runs, etc ... basically roll it in, plug it in, connect the network/FC cables, power up and go, all within 30-45 minutes. Additionally, effi ciency and power savings are very critical in the design and architecture phases, making sure to provide as much power to the IT equipment and as little to the supporting infrastructure as possible. By utilizing a management framework based upon ITIL, and having the proper expertise with ISV applications, security, H/A and BC/DR, one can manage these new capabilities with greater ease and better cost control.

The Art & Science of SOA: How Governance Enables AdoptionJOHAN NORDIN

Melding a stable enterprise architecture with the right level of technical and organization transparency involves two different perspectives. An architect can lay a SOA foundation that enables development teams to build new functional-ity leveraging Web Services. However, without a librarian’s perspective, the interaction between service providers and consumers sharing SOA assets can lead to your SOA projects stagnating. In this session, you’ll learn how Volvofi -nans brought together these two perspectives to accelerate SOA adoption.

The “Practical SOA” ApproachMAX YANKELEVIC

The End of Middleware As You Know ItERIC NEWCOMER

Dramatic industry changes - including vendor consolidation, outsourcing and the growth of open source - highlight the need for a better way. When a SOA implementation costs too much, the culprit is often the old-fashioned, proprietary and expensive server or hub-based middleware. A better, distributed approach to SOA infrastructure can help reduce cost and increase the benefi t of SOA imple-mentation. This presentation includes an overview of the industry trends driving us toward SOA and explains why traditional middleware systems do not meet modern requirements as well as a distributed approach to SOA infrastructure.

The Future of Virtual Desktops: Turning Rich Desktops into a Ubiquitous ServiceJULIAN WEINSTOCK

Does virtualization matter? Can virtual desktops go beyond the sum of the virtual parts? What is the business value and at what price? As server virtualization continues to gain deeper traction and provide benefi ts beyond server consolida-tion, desktop virtualization is widely expected to follow a similar trajectory and address many of the challenges associated with enterprise desktops. Virtual desktops hold the promise of increased business agility at reduced complexity and cost, while providing high fi delity user experience at a lower carbon foot-print. How is this promise delivered? This session explores the current technol-ogy trends, business scenarios and economic imperatives that are shaping the future of virtual desktops, enabling new delivery and consumption models.

The Future of VirtualizationGEORGE PRADEL AND PAUL VASQUEZ

As virtualization platform vendors strengthen and expand the feature sets of their respective offerings, it is almost a certainty that the data center in the future will include a heterogeneous mix of virtualization platforms as well as physical platforms. For organizations that are moving to virtualization, choosing the correct platform for their needs is only the start. For certain, organizations also will need to obtain a set of virtualization utilities to assist in moving to, and managing, one or more virtual platforms in their data centers. These utilities must not simply be “repurposed” tools from the physical world, but should also be specifi cally designed to leverage the effi ciencies and unique characteristics of the virtual platform. Virtualization utilities will be required for converting P2V, V2V, monitoring and optimizing performance of VMs, enabling backup and disaster recovery strategies, and reducing the costs of backup storage. The solutions needed to perform these tasks must not only be feature-rich and easy-to-use, they must also be multi-platform in order to support effi ciencies in the data center and promote the highest ROI for virtualization projects.

The Green Data Center, More than CSRRICH LECHNER

As governments and corporations intensify their focus on reducing energy demands and greenhouse gas emissions, pressure to improve data center energy effi ciency will continue to grow. We believe that the following four Rs must play an essential role in the development of any initiative to create a green data center:• Regain power and cooling capacity• Recapture resiliency• Reduce energy costs• Recycle end-of-of-life equipmentSuccessful organizations will make these four Rs their mantra. And in doing so, their ongoing efforts to think green will help keep their companies operating in the black.

Sessions components of an application (represented by the software stack) and the physical resources. In the case of middleware, whether it is data access, messaging or the business logic, the physical location of the resources should not matter to the developer and to the end user. This is not a trivial thing to do, especially when it comes to data-intensive, stateful (transac-tional or otherwise) applications and services. In this session we will explore the challenges and propose a solution, including a live demo.

The Next Generation Coherent NetworkBOB QUINN

While the next-generation data center has begun to take shape, the promise of true dynamic computing has so far eluded today’s resource, bandwidth and power constrained enterprises. Now however, key advancements in network and processor technologies are converging to lift the remaining barriers and enable truly dynamic computing. In this presentation, IT professionals will learn why this convergence enables the Coherent Network, turning an Enterprise Data Center into a single dynamic resource pool of compute cores, memory, and I/O.

The Opening of VirtualizationBRIAN STEVENS

Open Source. Open Standards. Open Collaboration. For the past 15 years, Linux has served as the benchmark of a successful global open source project. The impact has been far reaching: today it powers the Internet, a signifi cant portion of the datacenter, is the emerging market choice for the desktop, and soon will likely be on your phone. Over the last 5 years, this open community has turned its attention to virtualization. This talk will discuss what has been achieved and what is under development, and most importantly why open source is critical when building integrated infrastructure solutions

The Virtualized DatacenterKURT DANIEL

The last 10 years has seen a remarkable evolution in virtualization. First generation virtualization centered on Development & Testing and was largely confi ned to desktop computers and test servers. Second generation technology focused on Server Consolidation to lower hardware costs and saw the rise of hypervisor-powered hardware virtualization solutions. Now, we’re entering the third generation of virtualization, where Optimizing IT Infrastructure in the datacenter is critical. This next step forward will involve large-scale virtual-ized datacenter deployments that are heterogeneous, cross-platform, and include operating system and hypervisor-based virtualization for servers and workstations. This session will explore options and best practices not only on virtualization itself, but also on the management and automation tools required to support virtualized servers, such as provisioning virtual servers databases and applications, enabling departments to self-provision resources, enabling chargeback, improving availability of all IT services.

Transforming the Enterprise: Where Virtualization Meets AutomationTOM BISHOP

Virtualization is the future of IT management, but what exactly does that mean to your organization? CIOs around the world recognize that virtualization could be the answer to combating skyrocketing costs associated with managing their IT infrastructure; however, many are still left wondering how to implement a long-term, substainable virtualization strategy. In this session, BMC Software CTO, Tom Bishop, will explain how IT organizations can realize the full value of virtualization through aligning IT with business priorities and automating IT processes.

OPENING KEYNOTE:Using Virtualization to Transform Your DatacenterSTEPHEN HERROD

How can virtualization help transform your IT environment into a dynamic datacenter? In this Virtualization Keynote, Dr Stephen Herrod will explore how a virtualized IT infrastructure gives any organization a sustainable competi-tive advantage. We have reached a point in time, Herrod believes, when the industry is shifting and the true power of virtualization is being unleashed, allowing for reduced costs, more effi cient use of resources, increased avail-ability of applications and faster responsiveness to business needs.

Virtual Computing in the Cloud – How a Universal Dialtone Will Change the Way We Work and Play

KURT ZIEGLER

Virtual Cloud Computing represents the next wave of virtualization and offers signifi cant market opportunities by providing a new, simpler, and much more pervasive platform for on-demand, desktop and application service delivery. While server-side virtualization helps enterprises optimize data center resources, the use of a universal dialtone technology offers a signifi cantly larger market for desktop users in both commercial and consumer segments. The key to virtual cloud computing is in the universal dialtone which securely links users to desktop applications and content resources, on demand, via any device.

Virtualization - Path to Predictive EnterprisePRASAD RAMPALLI

Success in business increasingly relies on proactively harnessing the power of advanced technologies to manage processes, information, and relationships. Today’s IT intensive enterprise must always be on the lookout for the latest in innovation that allow businesses to run with fewer resources while providing the infrastructure to meet today’s and future customer needs. Virtualization technologies are driving a top to bottom overhaul of the computing industry. The growing awareness of the advantages provided by agile virtualized environments is brought about by economic factors of scarce resources, government regulation, and more competition. Many leading corporations are embarking on virtualization initiatives on their path to predictive enterprise. This keynote explores the following aspects: • Top CIO issues facing today’s IT environment • Understanding key trends and challenges facing virtualization adoption across the enterprise • Examine industry requirements to enable and accelerate the virtualization journey • Intel’s platform innovation/strategy and eco system partnerships addressing the challenges

Virtualization for High-End ComputingSHAI FULTHEIM

The session will describe the use of system aggregation, a revolutionary virtualization technology that allows end-users to get access to a large shared memory system built using multiple off-the-shelf x86 systems. Aggregation provides organizations with better price/performance compared to traditional symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) systems, and lowers the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) compared to clusters. This new virtualization technology for high-end computing takes advantage of the traditional SMP operating model such as ease of installation and management, as well as large memory, while maintaining the cost structure of x86 clusters.

Virtualization of Web ApplicationsBRIAN MARTIN

This presentation will compare and constrast Web application virtualiza-tion solutions such as WebSphere Extended Deployment and hardware virtualization solutions. Particular emphasis will be provided on how the two solutions can be combined to provide the most fl exible Web application hosting environment.

Virtualization’s Missing Link: Data Center AutomationSTEPHEN POLLACK

Virtualization is not a new story; its technologies allow companies to meet new business needs and say goodbye to underutilized hardware platforms, power consumption, server sprawl and spiraling IT costs. The technology is here and the benefi ts are already proving to be fruitful. However, these benefi ts are only possible if effective management tools are in place. This ses-sion will discuss virtualization’s missing link – data center automation – and how organizations can use it to create an agile, policy-based environment to automate and orchestrate virtual machine lifecycle management. For without proper management, companies only have a piece of the virtualization puzzle.

Virtualizing End Points - A Closer Look at This Game Changing ArchitectureETAY BOGNER

The need for a way to more effectively manage and reduce the complexity of end points has never been greater. While virtualization technologies offer a breakthrough approach to reduce the complexities of managing end points, there are different ways organizations are leveraging this technology.

This session discusses the distinct differences between how organizations are approaching virtualizing end points and the benefi ts each implementa-tion offers for gaining the performance, security and control needed to manage end points for today’s dispersed organizations.

WADL, URIs as Database Types, Tricks of the Architect’s TradeMARK HAPNER

URIs are the lingua franca of the web. They are in every Web page and every HTTP request. In a practical sense, they represent the realization of the Web. Without them, the Web would cease to exist. The situation is very different in the world of the RDBMS. Here, URIs are interlopers. Some RDBMS have provided basic support for URIs via their object extension facilities; however, URIs are still not considered a formal part of RDBMS schema design. This talk explores how URI could evolve to become as important to RDBMS Schemas as it is to the Web. One aspect of URI ‘types’ this presentation will cover is the use of Web Applica-tion Description Language (WADL). WADL has been described as SQL Schema meets REST. WADL is metadata describes the functional and structural aspects of a URI ‘type’ that a Web site or other provider offers through HTTP.

Web Service Virtualization for SOA Runtime Governance and ControlGREGORY BRAIL

Managing Web Services in production is no easy task. Ensuring that services follow corporate security and SOA governance requirements, monitoring compliance with individual SLAs, preventing one client from degrading the performance of others and ensuring services built today will work in the future are a few of the challenges. Web service virtualization provides a separate layer that isolates business and operational rules, enabling you to quickly confi gure virtual Web services while enforcing busi-ness and operational policies. This services layer augments Web services management (WSM) tools and registries, making all the services in the enterprise more effi cient and consistent.

Where We Are and Where We Need to Be with SOAJOE MCKENDRICK

The success of SOA runs two ways. SOA serves as the catalyst for organizational change, yet an organization must be ready to embrace these new dimensions opened up by SOA. The latest survey data shows most organizations are just starting on their SOA journeys. Why do enterprises set out to build a Service Oriented Architecture, but end up with a “Service Averse Architecture”? There are many promises being made about the potential of SOA these days, followed by disillusionment as these promises don’t pan out. However, SOA is more than a single IT project or even a series of implementations. Rather, SOA represents a long-term change in thinking and management of all aspects of the enterprise. SOA not only decomposes technology into loosely coupled systems, but also decomposes organizations into “loosely coupled businesses.” This session will look at the latest survey data on ways organizations are embracing service oriented architecture, and how far along the road most are from full-functioning SOA.

Workspace Virtualization: A Low-Cost, High-Perfor-mance Approach to Deploying Enterprise ComputingDROR GILL

Desktop and application virtualization technologies are increasingly being used throughout the enterprise to improve manageability and ease deploy-ment of corporate environments on PCs. While application virtualization solutions are typically limited to a single application, desktop virtualization solutions enable deployment of a full desktop environment. The inclusion of a full operating system in the virtualized desktop image creates solutions with high licensing costs, large footprint and deteriorated performance on end users’ PCs. Workspace Virtualization takes a suite of standard Windows® applications, and creates a virtualized application workspace on top of an existing Windows® OS installation. Workspace Virtualization creates a seam-less separation between the application workspace and the OS, optimizing the manageability, performance and deployment aspects of the enterprise environment. In this session, we will examine the technical features of Workspace Virtualization, and it application to diverse enterprise deployment scenarios such as remote access, disaster recovery, and creating a managed enterprise “island” on employee-owned and subcontractor-owned PCs.
