A Summer Adventure

Max and Emily were having the summer of their lives

– they loved to jump on Emily’s trampoline in her backyard and

sip lemonade on Max’s front porch. They were constantly

riding their bikes around the neighborhood together and

finding their next adventure.

One hot afternoon, Max and Emily parked their bikes

under a big, shady oak tree to take a break from the summer

heat.

Suddenly, Max shouted, “Emily, come over here!

Quick!”

On the side of the tree, Max had found a large, dark

hole. They could softly hear the sounds of waves crashing onto

a beach and seagulls squawking coming from the hole.

“What do you think this is?” Emily asked Max.

“I’m not sure, but let’s find out!” Max exclaimed.

Excitedly, Max climbed into the hole, and Emily

followed close behind him. As they walked down a dark path,

they felt a cool breeze, and the sounds of the waves and

seagulls grew louder and louder. Finally, they saw a light and

ran to the edge of the path.

“Woah!” Max gasped under his breath.

“Unbelievable!” Emily exclaimed.

They couldn’t believe what their eyes were seeing!

Social Studies: Independence Day

Also called the Fourth of July, Independence Day marks the historic date in 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was approved by a group called the Continental Congress. The written declaration basically stated that the American colonies were tired of being ruled by Great Britain. It was time for them to become their own country.

As the original thirteen colonies grew, the people who lived there thought the British government treated them unfairly. For instance, they had to pay taxes on items such as tea and allow British soldiers to stay in their homes. The colonists had to follow these laws but couldn’t do anything to change them. The colonists rebelled. As a result, the Revolutionary War between the colonists and Great Britain began in 1775.

Fighting wasn’t enough though. The colonists decided they needed to declare their independence in writing to explain their reasons. On July 4, 1776, a small group of representatives from the colonies—called the Continental Congress—adopted the Declaration of Independence.

Today the United States and Great Britain are friends. Most Americans still celebrate Independence Day, often with parades and fireworks. How do you celebrate the 4th of July?
