A Message from the Team

Once again many people

have come together to

create this year’s musical

‘Grease.’ Thanks must go to

Debbie Allen, Sue Forster,

Annamarie Newton and

Shaunna Nolan for their

hard work and vision.

The talent of the students

is clearly evident as they

perform for you this evening

with enthusiasm and flair.

Acting, singing, dancing,

often all at the same time

(what is commonly known

in the industry as ‘The Triple

Threat’) - all showcasing the

skills of our students right

across the performing arts

spectrum.

The idea for staging this

show was formed after a

successful run of productions

over the years such as

‘Guys & Dolls’ and ‘School

of Rock,’ – we wanted to

bite our teeth into a show

that had a huge dance

element and this seemed

the perfect show in order to

do this. Our male students

loved the ‘gang culture’ of

‘Guys & Dolls’ and were

very eager to create a gang

of T Birds! Plus after a

successful production of

‘Hairspray’ in 2015 we

knew our students would

rise to the dance challenge.

It also felt fitting to choose

‘Grease’ as it celebrated

it’s 40th anniversary last

year; what better way to

pay tribute to this classic

show. Many of our younger

students are performing for

the first time in this production

and they have been excellently

guided and supported by

our older, more experienced

students.

and Bruce Hicks for their

continued support. Thanks

also to the college PTA and

staff who have supported

this production in various

ways. Huge thanks must

also go to Carol Mason at

Morecrofts Solicitors & the

Mary Woolfe Charitable

Trust who have also kindly

The Story of Grease

Ask anybody about Grease

and they will be able to

tell you the story of the

star crossed lovers Sandy

& Danny: they are house-

hold names that roll off the

tongue much like Torvill

& Dean, Ginger Rogers &

Fred Astaire, Tom & Jerry. It

is a musical that has been

adored & cherished now

for forty years by audiences

around the world.

Grease is a 1971 musical

by Jim Jacobs and Warren

Casey (both writing the

music & script together),

and was adapted in 1978 as

a feature film starring John

Travolta & Olivia Newton-

John. Grease takes its title

from the 1950’s United

States working-class youth

subculture known as ‘greasers’

& the musical is set in 1959

at the fictional Rydell High

School. It follows ten working-

class teenagers as they

navigate the complexities of

peer pressure, politics, personal

core values and love.

Fittingly, the score borrows

heavily from the sounds

of early rock and roll - we

think of Chuck Berry, Patti

Page, Fats Domino, Elvis,

The Crystals as the musical

takes us through each toe-

tapping number.

Grease presents us with

larger than life characters

such as Danny Zuko -

strong, handsome & confident

leader of The T Birds,’

Rizzo - tough, outspoken

& sarcastic leader of The

Pink Ladies, Frenchie - a

sweet dreamer & beautician

wannabe, Kenickie - a tough,

tattoed & surly T Bird. All of

these characters are brought

to life by a hysterical libretto

and each of the characters are

decorated with a bespoke

‘look’ - who can forget the

iconic pink satin jackets of

the Pink Ladies, Danny’s

greased back hair, Sandy’s

black disco pants in the

final scene, Frenchie’s pink

wig… the list is endless!

Grease has celebrated

many revivals over the

past forty years around the

world including Grease:

Live broadcast by Fox TV in

2016, which like our show

incorporated songs from the

stage musical & the movie.

It brought the musical alive

for a whole new generation

- let’s hope its popularity

will continue for another

forty years.
