The Buffalo News: NeXt section is currently recruiting high school students in any grade level from the 2017-18 school year. Rising eighth graders are welcome to apply. Being a correspondent for NeXt is a wonderful opportunity for high school students who are interested in journalism careers or who are strong writers looking for a way to be published. Students who are selected to be correspondents work with a professional editor to conceptualize, develop, report and write stories of interest to teens and have their finished product published in both the print and online editions of The Buffalo News and get paid for their work. This is great for their resumes; also, many Next correspondents go on to get paid summer internships at the News, and several have been hired to work here full time. Interested applicants should prepare the following: 1. A cover letter including their name, address, email, phone number, school and grade level that also explains his or her interest in journalism and writing. 2. He or she should describe the types of stories they are interested in writing, and include three specific story ideas. 3. A writing sample. We prefer samples that reflect some understanding of journalism techniques, but if students do not have samples from the school paper, an academic essay is acceptable. Short fictional pieces, poems and personal essays are not acceptable. Applicants should send these materials to: Barbara Branning, NeXt Editor, The Buffalo News, One News Plaza, PO Box 100, Buffalo, NY 14240; Or email them to me at: [email protected]. The deadline is July 3 and selected applicants will be notified in early August. We have a high acceptance rate, so students should not be timid about applying.
