  • Enrichment Activities Academic Year 2017-2018

  • Enrichment Activities After School at Byron College 2017-2018

    Choosing Enrichment Activities at Byron College

    This new cycle begins Monday 12th March and will end Friday 8th June 2018.

    We are introducing some activities which are on an annual basis and some which have a 10-week cycle. Activities begin at 15:45 and finish at 17:00.

    Pupils can use the Late Bus free of charge. The Late Bus leaves school at 17:10 sharp. You can see a detailed map of the route on the following link: https://drive.google.com/open?id=12bKIt_nisWQPm-ooKTnFixtoBL4&usp=sharing

    Please have a look and specify where you wish your child to be dropped off. Our Transport Manager, Mr. Kyriakos Liakoutsis, will confirm to you which are the available drop-off points for your child. E-mail address to Mr. Kyriakos [email protected].

    Once again, we are proud to offer a wide range of activities to cater for children at all Key Stages; and, hopefully, to encourage parents to participate in some of our adult courses. Our staff members are professionals with skills and experience, and the prospect of running constructive and creative activities outside the school day has been met with enthusiasm. Last year’s Enrichment programme was successful, with some children trying new activities, while others choosing to remain in the activities chosen in the first cycle throughout the year.

    This year again we are introducing some new activities for pupils and parents, and we look forward to your response.

    To help you decide, read through our guidelines below and look at our list of activities offered. In our booklet, you will find more detailed descriptions of each activity offered. Please note that the booklet is a compilation of ALL activities offered during the year.

    How should you decide which activities are the best for your child, offer value for money, and critically, which ones they will enjoy?

    Enrichment activities are beneficial to your child’s personal and social development. Children who participate in enrichment activities often have better school attendance, improved academic performance, and loftier aspirations. Teenagers are less likely to get into trouble and are at lower risk of adolescent obesity.

    Enrichment activities can provide pupils with opportunities to:

    ✓ increase their participation in physical activity and improve fitness levels;

    ✓ further their knowledge, understanding and skills developed within curriculum time;

    ✓ try out activities not included within the curriculum;

    ✓ begin to specialise in specific activities;

    ✓ make independent choices and decisions about their participation;

    ✓ become involved in the organisation, management and leadership of activities;

    ✓ take part in activities for a variety of different reasons (e.g. for recreation, fun, competition, social awareness);

    ✓ socialise with pupils from different classes/year groups and make new friends.

    The benefits of an enrichment programme are self-evident - but which activities should you choose?

    https://drive.google.com/open?id=12bKIt_nisWQPm-ooKTnFixtoBL4&usp=sharingmailto:[email protected]

  • Below are some tips to help you support your child in making a choice:

    • Talk to your child and find out how they feel about the activity. Let them choose at least one club or activity themselves. Help them choose activities that reflect who they are and what they want to learn; don’t impose your preferences. Explain that it is important and fun to try new things, and remember that switching activities in the next cycle is to be expected.

    • Consider a mix of activities. The benefits of exercise are huge, so including a sport would be a good start. Extra-curricular activities allow children to experience what it means to be a team member or a group leader.

    • Finally, avoid signing up for too many activities. Children need to have independent play time as well as a programme of structured activities, so leave time for a family dinner, watching TV, and relaxing. Perhaps set aside some activities for the next cycle, to ensure a variety of experiences.

    • Lunchtime clubs and after-school activities can provide enrichment, adventure and variety. They can enhance knowledge and build character. Spend a while choosing the right activity with your child and you will reap the benefits.

    Our activities are split into the following categories:

    CREATIVE & ACADEMIC

    SPORTING & RECREATIONAL

    LUNCHTIME CLUBS

    IMPORTANT NOTES:

    We would like to remind you that an activity will commence once the specific group has reached a number of 7 pupils. If we do not have a participation of 7 pupils the specific activity will not start.

    As soon as you decide with your child which activity has been selected to attend, please download the Enrichment Activities Choice Form & Application from the school’s site (under Enrichment Activities), fill in all the information needed and hand in the office latest by Wednesday, 7th March 2018.

    For those of you whose child will need to use the Late Bus please have a look at the map carefully and specify where exactly you wish your child to be dropped off.

    The object is drums and percussion. The objective is rhythm. This activity aims to give the children the sense of belonging through the soothing dance-like motion of rhythm and express themselves emotionally through it. It's fun when we hear it. But it's even better when we partake! If someone 'feels the beat' and can play along (follow) they qualify! Parents will get to see that at the end of the cycle through a presentation.

    Develops musical perception and creates a vibrant, alert yet a relaxed sense of being. Extremely effective as a way to unwind. Unwinding is the foundation to all qualifications.

  • LUNCHTIME CLUBS & ACTIVITIES

  • Debating Club

    Teacher: Ms. Dodds

    Aimed at: Years 7-13

    Meeting point: B5

    Day(s): Tuesday / Thursday

    Activity Description and Aims

    Debating is a decision-making activity that develops pupils’ skills in public speaking through group interaction. It enables them to solve problems and make informed decisions about the opinions they have and wish to express. During the sessions, pupils will come into contact with a range of current affairs and aspects of popular public debate. They will use their general knowledge, research and collaborative skills to build an argument. The topic in question will be debated following the rules of a formal debate, as laid out by international debating committees.

    Why choose to debate?

    Further than helping to extend and hone speaking and listening skills, debating encourages values such as tolerance, sensitivity and respect. As an activity, it is both fun and educational. The English department also feel that in order for our pupils to be prepared for entering national competitions such as the annual Pan-Hellenic Forensics Tournament, more exposure to the demands of formal public speaking, as well as time to practise, are necessary. Moreover, the skills taught through debate are important to successful careers and leadership in virtually every field imaginable. Those interested in politics, law, business and marketing should definitely give it a try.

    What will the outcomes be?

    Through participation in debates, pupils will:

    1. Increase levels of self-confidence in public speaking situations

    2. Cultivate greater respect for and patience with peers

    3. Develop critical thinking skills

    4. Improve their knowledge about the world

    5. Extend research skills beyond the curriculum

    6. Enhance the value of their learning experience.

    Chess and Go Club Teacher: Brendan HicklingChess and Go Club Aimed at: Years 3 -13 Day: Wednesday Activity Description and aims Chess and Go are the classic games of strategy, invented 1000s of years ago in

    India and China they are considered the ultimate mental challenge. While countless other games have died out, these games live on. A grand master of Go was only first beaten by a supper computer in 2017. Everybody prefers to learn something while playing rather than to learn it formally and these games give many academic benefits, including:

    • Focusing – Children learn the benefits of observing carefully and concentrating. • Visualizing - Children are prompted to imagine a sequence of actions before they

    happen. • Thinking Ahead - Children are taught to think first, then act. • Weighing Options - Children learn that they don’t have to do the first thing that pops into

    their mind. They learn to identify alternatives and consider the pros and cons of various actions.

    • Planning - Developing longer range goals and taking steps toward bringing them about. Children learn the need to reevaluate their plans as new developments change the situation.

    • Juggling Multiple Considerations Simultaneously - Children are encouraged not to become overly absorbed in any one consideration, but to try to weigh various factors all at once.
