MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

Welcome! This has been an exciting time for Enrich Professional Publishing!

Considering the number of our past publishing triumphs, by this time next year,

we will have produced about 150 titles — a fine example of the collaborative

nature of publishing and a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our

many contributors. The first titles from Enrich Professional Publishing were the

products of our fruitful partnerships with the Renmin University of China and its

University Press, the Social Sciences Academic Press (China), and other renowned

institutions. We trust you will find these books an invaluable source of firsthand,

authoritative, and timely information about the fast changing economy and

financial developments of Mainland China. I am excited about being able to share

such important works from highly regarded Chinese academics and scholars with

a wider English-speaking audience.

We are now registered in America and are expanding our ebook, Kindle, and Print-

on-Demand (POD) efforts through our various partnerships around the world.

We are now able to reach readers worldwide in numerous print and electronic

formats. Our mission of bringing timely, accurate, and honest information on

China to readers is now bearing fruit on a grand scale. My team and I welcome

your feedback as we continue our journey.

EXCERPTS FROM THE BOOK

Aggregate demand in China, a regime of regulated interest rates, follows the rationing

equilibrium model of IS–LM. Fig. 1.5 shows that under a regulated interest rate (Rr), the

interest rate policy line R = Rr intersects with the IS curve on the right of the LM curve, and

the rationing equilibrium (Er) determines the real aggregate demand according to the short-

side rule, i.e., Y = min {Y | IS (R = Rr), Y | LM (R = Rr)} = Y | LM (R = Rr). Because Y

| LM (R = Rr) = K– (M/P – L (Rr)), the aggregate demand function for China takes the

monetarist form of Y = D (M/P, Rr) (Zheng, 1998). With the continuous clearing of the

money market under credit rationing, any excess investment demand over the saving supply

in the goods market is offset by excess supply in the credit market. As such, the IS–LM model

exhibits a general equilibrium, which satisfies the Walras’ law.

Inside China’s Shadow BankingThe Next Subprime Crisis?

By Joe Zhang

Amazon #1 Bestseller in Bank & Banking Section

Within shadow banking, China’s microcredit industry is an area of tremendous interest

for most business analysts. In this book, financial industry expert Joe Zhang pinpoints

the areas of concern based on his experience in the field and his knowledge of the

complicated rules and regulations of banking in China gathered during his years as an

official of the central People’s Bank of China in Beijing.

BOOK REVIEW His new book, “Inside China’s Shadow Banking” recounts his trials as the head of a

microlender in Guangdong. Mr Zhang’s book is marketed to people who suspect that systemic

dangers lurk in these shadows.

--Simon Cox, The Economist

This is an informed, clearly written and timely look at China's financial system by a real

player in the system itself.

-- James McGregor, author of:"No Ancient Wisdom,

No Followers: The Challenges of Chinese Authoritarian Capitalism"

Joe Zhang has impeccable timing. The former investment banker’s book about running a

small Chinese microcredit firm, “Inside China’s Shadow Banking”, has hit shelves just as

concerns about the country’s runaway credit boom are capturing global headlines.

Party Man, Company ManHow State Capitalism Works in China

By Joe Zhang

ABOUT THE BOOKFrom 2006 to 2008, Joe was C.O.O. at Shenzhen Investment Ltd, a government-

controlled company. They had more than 1,000 employees based in 10 cities in China

but their business model was old-fashioned and nearly dead.

After his arrival he aggressively sold off the non-core businesses and changed the

company’s incentive system.

After that, the stock of the company rose 600% in just two years.

In his three years at Shenzhen Investment, Joe sat on the boards of several other

companies, both government-controlled ones and private sector rivals.

His story is the story of how capitalism works in China. It is the story of the seemingly

unstoppable Chinese economic juggernaut. What lessons did he learn that can point

the way for China’s bloated economy? What are his insights into China’s special form of

capitalism?

Both a personal story and an examination of the country’s unique economic system, the

book reveals the impact of China’s success for those doing business in China or with

China today.

Haitong International: Current Economic and Financial Issues

Strategic Priorities: Achieving China's Global Economic GoalsBy Dr. Yifan Hu (Chief Economist, Haitong International Securities)

The First Book in a New Series on the Vital Issues Confronting Business Leaders and Policy-Makers in China and the Asian Region

KEY FEATURES

Provides an overview of issues of vital importance to anyone doing business in China or in the Asian region

Looks at issues ranging from ASEAN and China’s relations with its neighbors to the use of the Renminbi as a reserve currency

Analyzes China’s ongoing and growing investments in Africa, the levels of China’s local government debt, and the risks of the Chinese pension system

Considers the rise of China as a world superpower, the future of China’s shale gas industry, and the nation’s ongoing policy reforms

Reveals how U.S. government actions and fiscal policies affect China and the larger

Asian region and plots a path for the future

CONTENT HIGHLIGHTS

In the United States, the Obama administration will first organize a smooth handling of

the so-called fiscal cliff and this should play a stabilizing role on consumption and the

rest of the economy. In the long-term, the U.S. structural reforms are to focus on fiscal

consolidation, lead to the development of ambitious industrial policies, and assist in

the completion of financial reforms. The re-industrialization policy will play a central

role in the rebirth of the U.S. economy. The policy will offer a defense of strategically

important industrial sectors, give assistance to potential growth via infrastructure

projects, support research and education, align with a goal of energy self-sufficiency,

and fit in with a protectionist external trade policy. All of this will be coupled with

supporting re-shoring.

In China, we expect an investment boom to provide a short- to medium-term boost

following the leadership transition which should initiate another “Golden Decade,”

while structural reforms will be essential for sustaining long-term economic growth.

China is in a long process of transitioning towards a domestic consumption-driven

growth model and away from an export-led and investment-driven model, and China

still needs various structural reforms, including an enhancement of the contribution of

consumption and services in the GDP structure in particular.

CONTENT HIGHLIGHTS

Humanism as the Core Value of Confucianism

Naturalness in Daoism

The Concepts of “Impartial Care” in Mohism

Different Interpretations of “Law” in terms of Legalism

The Relationship Between Sophism and Logicians

“Five Elements” in the School of Yin-Yang

EXCERPTS FROM THE BOOK

Commenting on the Spring and Autumn Annals by Confucius, Mencius said, “The affairs

in the Spring and Autumn Annals were the deeds of Duke Huan of Qi and Duke Wen of

Jin, and the text was the record of the official historians. Confucius said, ‘Their significance

I ventured to make out.’” From my understanding, Mencius’ comment had two layers of

meaning. First, while it is true that it is the “affairs” and “text” that are derived from the

primary historical works of Lu that make the Spring and Autumn Annals what they are,

what is more important is the conferring of “significance.” … The other layer of meaning is

that this “significance” embedded in the Annals is what Confucius “ventured to make out.”

This stresses the individuality of the conferring of significance, which implies that Confucius’

recording of history was an exertion of his humanistic learning in accordance with his

temperament.

EXCERPTS FROM THE BOOK

In the first month of the 20th century, two years and four months after the Coup of 1898,

Empress Dowager Cixi who fled Beijing under the threat of the Eight-Nation Alliance

forces issued an imperial edict in the name of the emperor to institute a reform, marking

the start the New Policy Campaign in the last decade of the Qing Dynasty. Facing the

social crisis after the Gengzi Event and the impending revolution, the Qing government

apparently signaled its intention of self-rectification. It was an irony to see that one who had

once cracked down on reformers advocate “reforms.” It was criticized as a “fake reform” and

considered different from the Wuxu Reform, which had the purpose to save and restore the

empire. However, truth often exists in paradox: this fake reform in turn produced certain

real changes, the most notable being that to the education system. These changes persisted
