Psalms 37:7-8“Be still beforethe LORD andwait patientlyfor him; do notfret when mensucceed in theirways, when they
carry out theirwicked schemes.8 Refrain fromanger and turnfrom wrath; do
not fret it leads only to evil.”
What is patience? It can be difficultfor us to be patient especiallywhen you are experiencing suf-
fering. "Patience is a calm endurancebased on the certain knowledge that Godis in control." Longsuffering is that quali-ty of self-restraint in the face of provoca-tion which does not hastily retaliate; it isthe opposite of anger, and is associatedwith mercy. It is the quality that does notsurrender to circumstances or succumbunder trial; it is the opposite of despon-dency and is associated with hope.
What tests your patience? Bibleteachers who talk too long. Long lines atthe grocery store. Working with comput-ers. Telemarketers at 5:00 P.M. Whatdoes the Bible teach about patience ? 1st Corinthians 13:4 says, “Love ispatient.” Proverbs 14:29 says, “A patientman has great understanding, but aquick-tempered man displays folly.”Amen!
For years William Wilberforcepushed the Britain’s Parliament to abolishslavery. Discouraged, he was about togive up. His elderly friend, John Wesley, heard of it and from his deathbed calledfor pen and paper. With trembling hand,Wesley wrote: “Unless God has raisedyou up for this very thing, you wouldhave been worn out by the opposition ofmen and devils. But if God be for you,who can be against you? Are all of themstronger than God? “Oh be not weary ofwell-doing! Go on, in the name of Godand in the power of his might, till evenAmerican slavery shall vanish awaybefore it.” Wesley died six days later, butWilberforce fought for forty-five moreyears and in 1833 he saw slavery abol-
ished in Britain. Three days later he died. What if he would have given up?
What can you do when you areangry and want to complain? First thinkabout whether is this really worth gettingangry about? Will it cause more problemsthan it solves? Control your anger youhave a choice. You can recognize it,admit it, and express it properly. Directyour anger at a thing not a person. Donot say “You make me angry!” Amen!
How can you be more patient?Remember how patient God was and iswith you. Remember to make allowancesfor each other. Patience is an act of wor-ship. Please remember that nothing hascome into your life that God has notallowed and do not be discouragedbecause perseverance pays off. Amen!
Here is a short story that I readyears ago. When this figure in historywas seven years old, his family wasforced out of their home on a legal tech-nicality, and he had to work to help sup-port them. At age nine, his mother died.At 22, he lost his job as a store clerk. Hewanted to go to law school, but his edu-cation was not good enough. At 23, he
went into debt to become a partner in astore. At 26, his business partner died, leaving him a huge debt that took yearsto repay. At 28, after courting a girl forfour years, he asked her to marry him.She said no. At 41, his four-year-old sondied. At 45, he ran for the Senate andlost. At 47, he ran for vice-president andlost. At 49, he ran for the Senate again, andlost. And at 51, he was elected presidentof the United States. His name wasAbraham Lincoln. Where would ourcountry be today if he would have givenup? Where will others be tomorrow if yougive up?
How can a believer be condemnedsince we are forgiven? It means that youmay be found to be at fault before God.James refers to Matthew 7:1 “Judge notlest you be judged. “ To "grumble againstone another" is virtually to judge, and soto become liable to be judged. Amen!

He is nothing like the other candi-
dates running for Mayor of the
City of Dallas, and this is not his
first rodeo. He has made a run for the
Mayor’s office twice before in 2003 and
2007. He has been called, “a hidden
gem in Dallas.”
“A hidden gem in this year’s
(2007) Dallas mayoral race was
Nigerian-born real estate appraiser.
But the results betray the strength of
Mr. Okpa’s intellect and his ideas.
What’s most impressive about the
naturalized American citizen is he
studied and sometimes counterintu-
itive way of examining the issues. Of
all the candidates, this busboy-
turned-entrepreneur may best sym-
bolize – and articulate – what it takes
to bridge the social and economic
divide between the northern and
southern halves of the city.”
Excerpts from the Dallas News article
after the 2007 Mayoral election.
He is what I’m sure some would
call “unconventional”, he has a new
and different approach to fixing what
is wrong with Dallas. As a matter of
fact, he says if elected he will take a
sprinkler system approach to the
economy. Rather than operate this city
like a river or dam where everything
flows to one area or one section of the
city, he will use the sprinkler system,
where the wealth is equally distributed
throughout the city, that way everyone
benefits economically.
Under his Dallas Economic
Empowerment Plan (DEEP) , he will
address issues such as Public Safety,
Budget, New Jobs, Neighborhood
Revitalization, International Trade and
Education and Training. And he says
that he will work to help revitalize
Dallas’ southern sector and transform
Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., into a
major economic corridor, worthy of the
street’s namesake.
He has international trade experi-
ence having accompanied former
Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk, current US
trade ambassador on several interna-
tional trade missions. Mr. Okpa is high-
ly involved in international business
development. He participated in an 8-
person leadership mission to Oman
sponsored by World Affairs Councils of
America and was appointed
Investment and Export Promotion
Representative for US/Texas by
OCIPED. He is currently working with
them to increase business to Texas
based companies.
He says he has a PHD for
Dallas…Passion, Hardwork and
Dedication. He says Dallas’ next
leader needs to be a person who is
willing to work with and serve all of
the citizens of Dallas; whether they
live in the northern or southern
sector of the city.
He is Harvard educated. He is the
principal of the OKPA Company,
LLC and has been appraising and
brokering commercial real estate,
and consulting on international
trade for many years. In addition
to his business experience, his
community service includes, recipi-
ent of the Samuel G. Winstead
Award for raising more than $1 mil-
lion dollars for Park South YMCA in
1998. He serves on the Dallas
Development Fund board.
“I Love Dallas and I believe that
together with the voter’s help, we
can do more for Dallas”, said Mr.
Okpa.
As always we encourage our read-
ers to educate themselves about the
candidates who solicit their votes.
There are several candidates vying for
the office of Mayor of this fine city, and
all of them need your vote to be elect-
ed. Do your homework and vote for
the candidate who best represents
your ideas and who’s direction for
Dallas is the direction you would like to
see this city take.

genesis 15:1
Do we real-ly takeGod at His
Word? We saywe do, but do we really, totally believewhat God says will eventually cometrue? Well, we do not act like we do,because if we really take God at Hisword, we would not do some of thethings that we do. The reason why Isay that is because I am a prime exam-ple, and that is why I was a non-believ-er for so long. In other words that iswhy I remained in the world of sin notknowing, and not wanting to knowGod, because I did not take God at Hisword. I heard my mother talk aboutthe joy of Jesus Christ. I read about itin Sunday School all my childhooddays.
I’ve heard preachers preach aboutthe joy God will give, but I did not real-ly believe that is because I was neverbaptized until I reached the age offorty-two. I did not think that anythingcould top the good times, and the funI was having in the street of Dallas. Ithought I was at the epitome of fun,and that is just what it was FUN. I didnot think things could get any betterthat it was at the time in my life, but Ihad never experienced joy until I metthe Lord Jesus Christ.
After I met Jesus I found JOY andyou know it is a funny thing about JOY,you can’t explain it no matter howmuch you try. All you can do is tellsomebody how to get it, but you can-not explain to anybody about it. All youcan tell them is that you found com-plete JOY in Jesus Christ. They have toget it for themselves. After experienc-ing the joy I would not give it up for
any amount o f money. When you haveJOY you will be able to do great thingsin God’s name. You remember whenPeter and John went down to Samaria(Acts 8:14-18) and Simon the socerorasked Peter and John to sell him someof this power or magic. Now, when Ibecame a Christian I began to under-stand why a sinner would not take Godat His word.
Men of God often get caught up intraps, because they go through themotion of taking God at His word, butin some instances they really don’t, butwe as Christians must learn to takeGod at His word. There are some peo-ple we read about in the Bible who didnot take God at His word. Take Adamfor instance, He really did not take Godat His word when God told him if heate of the forbidden fruit he wouldsurely die.
After Adam sinned. God made itplain that to please Him or makeatonement for your sins, there must bethe shedding of blood. Well Abel andCain understood this, but Cain offeredup fruits and vegetables which wasgood, but not acceptable for sin, andthat is why God turned his offeringdown, but accepted Abel’s offering.Cain did not take God at His word.
Don’t you be a fool enough tobelieve that if you want something, justbelieve hard enough and you will haveit. This is not faith. Faith is taking Godat His word. It is believing and actingon what God has revealed. Joy isinward, a response to man fulfilling hiscreation purpose of fellowship withGod, and how can man fulfill his cre-ation purpose? By “Taking God at HisWord”. As Christians we say we believeGod’s word. Do we really?
Let us remember to read our Bibles.May God bless you REAL GOOD, andmay He ever keep you in His lovingcare.

(Another versionof the Flight of theButterfly worthyof repeating.)
One day, manfound acocoon of a
butterfly. Soon, asmall openingappeared. He satand watched thebutterfly for sev-eral hours as itstruggled tosqueeze its bodythrough the tinyhole. Then itstopped, as if itcouldn’t go fur-ther.
So the man decided to help the but-terfly. He took a pair of scissors andsnipped off the remaining bits of cocoon. The butterfly emerged easily but it had aswollen body and shriveled wings. Theman continued to watch it, expecting thatany minute the wings would enlarge andexpand enough to support the body, nei-ther happened!
In fact the butterfly spent the rest ofits life crawling around. It was never ableto fly. What the man in his kindness andhaste did not understand was that therestricting cocoon and the strugglerequired by the butterfly to get through theopening was a way of forcing the fluidfrom the body into the wings so that itwould be ready for flight once that wasachieved.
Sometimes struggles are exactly whatwe need in our lives. Going through lifewith no obstacles would cripple us. We willnot be as strong as we could have beenand we would never fly.
This allegory not only applies to ourown lives, but also to our parenting skills. It is so difficult to see our children struggleand all too often we decide to help or pro-tect them from life’s struggles.
But they too are like thebutterfly–they must experience physicaldifficulties to develop their muscles. Theymust also experience loss, heartache anddifficult challenges to develop strong per-sonalities and character.
Truly there are instances in life thatwhat we’re doing for other people doesn’tresult to what we expect it to be. Yes, wemay have valid reasons and good inten-tion, but it ended up to their immaturityand misfortune. Sometimes we cannotafford ourselves to just watch and seethem suffering, that is why we tend tooffer our unsolicited advice for their growthand development.
But we must have to learn also…thatthey must spread their wings like an eagle, they must have to stand on their own, dis-cover their potentials and bear the conse-quence of their actions.
We must learn to encourage our chil-dren as they crawl and struggle.
To be a full blown butterfly is aprocess as well as to be a maturedChristian. There are certain stages that weneed to undergo and experience. It takestime……..in HIS time! Then possibly, theycan be …. the best person GOD wantsthem to be.
Then we can rejoice when they Fly!!!!!!

to pray to? Manwithout God is apitiful thing. Weare wretched cr-eatures and can-not master our-selves. In otherwords, withoutGod, we can donothing. It isbecause of our
weakness and incompleteness that weare driven to pray to our HeavenlyFather and this could be the means ofestablishing a deep and abiding fellow-ship with God. David the Psalm writer, felt an urgency to call on God for help, after realizing that he was helplesswithout God. In Psalms 55: 16-17, “asfor me, I will call upon God, and theLord shall save me.” Evening andmorning and at noon I will pray andcry aloud, and he shall here my voice.
I’m not a person who holdsgrudges. As a matter of fact,sometimes I wish I
could. I have this friendwho, while we’re on goodterms, is a really goodfriend to me. However, when she calls herselfupset with me, I don’thear from her nor doesshe answer my calls. She gets angry over thesmallest and silliestthings, so I’ve neverdone anything major toher. We just have different personali-ties that sometimes clash. I don’t likewhen she gets into her moodsbecause even though she’s mad, I feellike I’m still in need of my friend. Somore and more, it’s hurting my feel-ings and I want to break off the friend-ship once and for all. I’ve been tryingto tell myself not to answer her callswhen she decides it ‘s time for us to beon speaking terms again; but that
doesn’t work because I’m alwaysscared that she may be in some sort of
serious trouble and needs me.However, I’m tired of it, but Ican’t get mad enough at her tobreak off our friendship. Am Ibeing silly as well? I guesswhat I want to know is am I abad person for not wanting tobe friends anymore? And howdo I go about breaking those
kinds of ties?Broken Friendship
Dear Broken,First of all, two wrongs don’t make aright. If the two of you are true friendsthen make it your responsibility toteach her how to really be a friend. It’snot wrong to feel hurt by what she isdoing, however your response needsto be positive so that you remain thebetter person. Inst r u c t i o n sabout worshipI Timothy 2:1-
6; 3:14-16 wasour church schoollesson. Paul writ-ing to his son inthe ministry says“I exhort there-fore, that “First ofall” pray for allpeople. Ask God tohelp them; inter-cede on their
behalf, and give thanks for them”. Prayerto Paul was the first priority the mostimportant thing in the public worship ofthe church. What happened to prayer inthe church? It’s sad to see how prayerhas lost its importance in many church-es. Someone said that if you announce abanquet, people will come out of thewoodwork to attend. But if youannounce a prayer meeting you wouldbe lucky if the ushers show up. Not onlyhave the special meetings for prayer loststature in most local churches, but even
prayer in the public services is greatlyminimized. Many churches spend moretime on the announcements than theydo in prayer! Jesus said “Men oughtalways to pray and not to faint”.Christians must pray for everyone, thatthey might be saved. The lesson estab-lished that “there is only one God andone Mediator who can reconcile God andhumanity—the man Christ Jesus. Hegave his life to purchase freedom foreveryone. This little known story has met a justconclusion, as Sophia Stewart, AfricanAmerican author of The Matrix will
finally receive her just due from the copy-right infringement of her original work!!!
A six-year dispute has ended involvingSophia Stewart, the Wachowski Brothers,Joel Silver and Warner Brothers. Stewart’sallegations, involving copyright infringe-ment and racketeering, were received andacknowledged by the Central District ofCalifornia, Judge Margaret Morrow presid-ing.
Stewart, a New Yorker who hasresided in Salt Lake City for the past fiveyears, will recover damages from the films,The Matrix I, II and III, as well as TheTerminator and its sequels. She will soonreceive one of the biggest payoffs in thehistory of Hollywood, as the gross receiptsof both films and their sequels total over2.5 billion dollars.
Stewart filed her case in 1999, afterviewing the Matrix, which she felt had beenbased on her manuscript, ‘The Third Eye,’copyrighted in 1981. In the mid-eightiesStewart had submitted her manuscript toan ad placed by the Wachowski Brothers, requesting new sci-fi works.
According to court documentation, anFBI investigation discovered that more than
thirty minutes had been edited from theoriginal film, in an attempt to avoid penal-ties for copyright infringement. The investi-gation also stated that ‘credible witnessesemployed at Warner Brothers came for-ward, claiming that the executives andlawyers had full knowledge that the work inquestion did not belong to the WachowskiBrothers.’ These witnesses claimed to haveseen Stewart’s original work and that it hadbeen ‘often used during preparation of themotion pictures.’ The defendants tried, onseveral occasions, to have Stewart’s casedismissed, without success.Stewart has confronted skepticism on allsides, much of which comes from Matrixfans, who are strangely loyal to theWachowski Brothers. One on-line forum, entitled Matrix Explained has an entire sec-tion devoted to Stewart. Some who haveresearched her history and writings areopen to her story.Others are suspicious and mocking. ‘Itdoesn’t bother me,’ said Stewart in a phoneinterview last week, ‘I always knew whatwas true.’
Some fans are unaware of the case orthey question its legitimacy, due to the factthat it has received little to no media cover-age. Though the case was not made publicuntil October of 2003, Stewart has her ownexplanation, as quoted ataghettotymz.com:
‘The reason you have not seen any ofthis in the media is because WarnerBrothers parent company is AOL-TimeWarner…. this GIANT owns 95 percent ofthe media… let me give you a clue as towhat they own in the media business…New York Times papers/magazines, LATimes papers/magazines, People Magazine,CNN news, Extra, Celebrity Justice,Entertainment Tonight, HBO, New LineCinema, DreamWorks, Newsweek, VillageRoadshow and many, many more! They arenot going to report on themselves. Theyhave been suppressing my case for years.’
Fans who have taken Stewart’s allega-tions seriously, have found eerie mytholog-ical parallels, which seem significant in acase that revolves around the highlymetaphorical and symbolic Matrix series.Sophia, the Greek goddess of wisdom hasbeen referenced many times in speculationabout Stewart. In one book about theGoddess Sophia, it reads, ‘The black god-dess is the mistress of web creation spun inher divine matrix.’Although there have been outside implica-tions as to racial injustice (Stewart isAfrican American), she does not feel thatthis is the case. ‘This is all about theBenjamins,’ said Stewart. ‘It’s not aboutmoney with me. It’s about justice.’
Stewart’s future plans involve a recordlabel, entitled Popsilk Records, and a
motion picture production company, AllEyez On Me, in reference to God. ‘I wroteThe Third Eye to wake people up, to remindthem why God put them here. There’s moreto life than money,’ said Stewart. ‘My wholeto the world is about God and good andabout choice, about spirituality over ‘tech-nocracy’.’If Stewart represents spirituality, then shetruly has prevailed over the ‘technocracy’represented in both the Terminator and theMatrix, and now, ironically, by their sup-posed creators.
Stewart is currently having discussionswith CBS about a possible exclusive storyand has several media engagements in thenear future to nationally publicize her victo-ry. June 13th 2004. Sophia Stewart’s pressrelease read: ‘The Matrix & Terminatormovie franchises have made world historyand have ultimately changed the way peo-ple view movies and how Hollywood doesbusiness, yet the real truth about the cre-ator and creation of these films continue toelude the masses because the hiddensecret of the matter is that these films werecreated and written by a Black woman…aBlack woman named Sophia Stewart. ButHollywood does not want you to know thisfact simply because it would change histo-ry. Also it would encourage our Black chil-dren to realize a dream and that is…noth-ing is impossible for them to achieve!’

The SWAC (SouthwesternAthletic Conference) has been aroundsince 1920, and has always been col-orful, vibrant and full of life. TheSWAC has produced some outstand-ing athletes and students over theyears. This week, the activities aretaking place in the Garland SpecialEvents Center, centrally located in theMetroplex with good accessibility, andmakes for some good basketball andpeople watching.
But the 8 teams that are compet-ing brought a repertoire of bands, cheerleaders, mascots and dancinggirls. The good thing is that SWACwill be here for the next three years atleast. The Garland Special EventsCenter is a great facility that rolled outthe red carpet for this event.
Each school mined for studentsand had a chance to show what theyhad to offer to the Metroplex. Eachone of the HBCU’s came with theirown flare. This could be the start of
something big for SWAC and theMetroplex. This gives the SWAC andthe Metroplex exposure to some ofthe areas and the State’s HBCU talentand opportunities for higher educa-tion.
The last time the SWAC was inthe Metroplex was back in 1998, andPrairie View A & M won the SWACchampionship. It was good to seeAlumni of HBCU’s volunteering andworking extremely hard to assist andrecruit while working throughout thetournament. It is extremely impor-tant for the students of the Metroplexto get a chance to see successfulHBCU Alumnus up front and personal. As it stands right now, TexasSouthern University seems to bepoised to win the SWAC tournamenton the Men’s side if they can increasetheir free throw percentage. On theWomen’s side, Prairie View A &M andSouthern University seem to havewhat it takes to win the SWAC.

BaRBeRshOp Talk wiTh leON simON Lincoln Falls to Kimball and Joins A. Maceo Smith in the State High
School Basketball Tournament... continued from the front coverJanuary 2010, theoutlook for areap r o f e s s i o n a lteams was: TheTexas Rangerswould play 162.Miss the playoffsby 10 games asper usual. TheDallas Cowboyswould be the in
the first Super-Bowl at Jerry’s world. That’s achievable as a matter of factexpected. The Dallas Mavericks wouldlose in the first round of playoffs;achievable, and expected.
The Texas Rangers played in the lastgame of the year in the World Series! The Cowboys followed the economyand went down the tubes.
The Dallas Mavericks are coming tothe end of the regular season. Earlier Iwrote that they were close enough tomake that block buster move to getthem in the last game of the year. Imentioned a Carmelo Anthony typemove. The Mav’s tried to obtain DevinHarris from the New Jersey Nets, knowing the Utah Jazz had a big infat-uation for Devin. Then the Mav’s wouldput together a package that includedDevin to get the Colony’s own DeronWilliams from the Jazz.
That would have been the CarmeloAnthony type move I mentioned. Thatfailed but I’m not sure the Mavericksfailed. They got veteran forward andsharp shooter Peja Stojakovic a 12 yrveteran. Peja’s been in the league longenough he won’t be jockeying for timeor shots. Peja could get hot and hit 50any given night. They finally got RoddyBeaubois off the injured list. He could
be the best athlete on the team. Roddycan get hot and hit 50. They picked upa 6’9” Corey Brewer. I don’t think theybrought him her to hit 50, they broughthim here to keep The Kobe Bryant, andLebron James types from hitting50;despite going through a 6or7 gamelosing streak earlier this season. TheMaverick’s are tied with Boston at 45wins the second best number of wins inthe NBA. They lost a tight game athome, to the Memphis Grizzles. I don’tever think losing is beneficial but some-times it can be like caffeine and giveyou a wake up call. We have about 20games remaining. I believe if theMavericks stay health they will dupli-cate what the Rangers did. They willplay in the last game played in the NBAthis season.
I’m one that says: When you getdown to the last 4 teams it’s still hardto pick a champion. I didn’t say theywould be champions I said they wouldplay in the championship game. I willsay they will have a better chance towin that game than the Rangers did. Inprevious years The Spurs and for surethe Lakers would strike fear in theMavericks. I don’t believe that teamexist anymore that strikes fear in theMavs.
This team is built to play any typegame. The half court, the run and gun,any type game they chose or any typegame they are forced to play. Forcedthrough foul trouble or what ever. Theywon’t feel uncomfortable playing anyteam or style. With a little luck thisteam could easily be NBA champions. That laugh I hear sounds like the sameone the world heard when the Saintswon the Bowl.
do it defensively,” said Coach Johnson. And the Knights did just that.
Kimball and Lincoln split two regu-lar season meetings, but Saturdaynight the Knights took advantage ofplayer Austin Franklin’s relationshipwith LeBryan Nash. Franklin and Nashwent to middle school together andthey train together, so Franklin knewNash’s weaknesses.
Coach Johnson told his playersto make the game as frantic as pos-sible, and they did just that. Withsome finely orchestrated defense,Franklin would pick up Nash, andthen the big man Jordan Williamswould join him on the double team ifand when needed. Then Franklinand Williams, along with a support-ing cast of Jarion Henry and OscarLewis would switch out defendingNash and so on and so on.
After a 16-12 lead in the first quar-ter, Kimball allowed three field goalsthe next two quarters and took a dou-ble-digit lead that they would neverrelinquish for the rest of the night. Andwhen the buzzer sounded the KimballKnights had defeated the LincolnTigers by a score of 51-42. Nashended the night with 20 points, withonly 8 of them coming in the first threequarters.
The A. Maceo Smith High SchoolBoys basketball team will play in thestate 3A basketball tournament for the
first time in the school’s history. Smithfaces Corpus Christi Oso at 2p.m. onThursday, March 1o at Frank ErwinCenter in Austin. Earning a berth inthe regional finals was a first-evermilestone for the school. Smith defeat-ed Lindale, 56-53, and Argyle, 63-60 to
advance to state. If they win onThursday, they will play again at 10:00a.m. on Saturday, March 12. Bothgames will broadcast live on radio sta-tion KNIT-1480 AM.
This is their first final year as acomprehensive high school. Next fall, the campus will be recast as A. MaceoSmith New Tech High School, offeringa technology-centered, project-basedcurriculum. Students in the Smithattendance zone will move to a reno-vated Wilmer-Hutchins High School.
Hats off to LeBryan Nash,Coach Leonard Bishop and theentire Lincoln Tigers basketballteam for a fine and excitingseason and good luck to CoachRoyce Johnson and theKimball Knights as they pre-pare to face Cedar Park onThursday night, 8:30 pmtipoff! On the other side of theState 4A bracket, Fort WorthArlington Heights will take onLa Marque.
Good Luck to all theDallas – Ft. Worth teams com-peting for the State HighSchool basketball champi-onships! Bring home the hard-ware!

Dallas hanged 3 Slaves in Civil War Hysteria July 8, 1860. It was thefire that consumed most of downtown Dallas. But Michael Phillips,"White Violence, Hegemony, and Slave Rebellion in Dallas, Texas, before the Civil War quotes people who say it was an accident. Otherreported fires around the state didn't really even happen, and some ofthe "evidence" against the abolitionists was suspect. In 1892, onecommunity leader told the Herald, "We whipped every negro in thecounty, one by one" in order to get confessions and accusations. InJuly, a fire burned down most of the business district. Arson was sus-
pected and two abolitionists were run out of town and three slaves, Patrick Jennigsm,Sam Smith, and a slave called "Cato" were hung. The remaining slaves were beaten. Theverdict was a divided one. Sam Houston claimed that the fire eaters exploited a series ofaccidents to whip up the hysteria. Dallas County voted for secession by 76%, but it wasonly 7 months after the Dallas fire and the hysteria.
