TOSHIRO KIDO

SUNTORY HALL INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM FOR MUSIC COMPOSITION

THEME COMPOSER: PASCAL DUSAPIN

THE 24TH COMPETITION OF AKUTAGAWA AWARD FOR

MUSIC COMPOSITION

The second edition of the Producer's Series is curated by Toshiro Kido, stage director. He has researched the ancient music of Japan and ancient instruments from the Silk Road for years, and works actively on creating music with them in the context of our time. He has commissioned new works for performances of Japanese ancient dance and music from composers abroad, and has directed them. Be an eye-witness to the new next stage of Toshiro Kido.

Suntory Hall commissions orchestral work from one composer active in the frontlines in the world every year and present its world-premiere during Summer Festival. Advocated by the late Toru Takemitsu, this series was launched in the year of the opening of the hall in 1986, and 36 works have been commissioned and premiered. Among them are works by Isang Yun, John Cage, Luigi Nono, Tan Dun, Oliver Knussen, Esa-Pekka Salonen et al. who are indispensable in the history of music. For the 2014 program, Toshio Hosokawa, one of the leading composers of our time and director of this series, has appointed Pascal Dusapin, a French composer (winning the Grand Prix National de Musique and the SACEM Prize).

The Akutagawa Award for Music Composition was founded in 1990 commemorating Mr. Yasushi Akutagawa for his significant contribution to the development of the world of music of Japan in the postwar period. Selecting several symphonic works filled with fresh energy and capability by upcoming Japanese composers, the elimination for the award is held at a concert open to the public. The winning composer is commissioned for a new work, which is premiered at the concert next year in Summer Festival,

Concert #1The leading horn virtuoso Radek Baborak also loves chamber music. He returns to the Garden with his song sung by his beloved instrument.

Sun, June 8Hrn: Radek Baborak, etc.

Concert #2The Pacifica Quartet, the first runner to accomplish the Beethoven Marathon in 3 days in 2011, will make an Asian premiere of a co-commisioned piece by Music Accord, Wigmore Hall and Suntory Hall.

SUNTORY FOUNDATION FOR ARTS’

SUMMER FESTIVAL 2014“Summer Festival” at Suntory Hall has introduced music of the 20th century and music at the forefront since 1987. In 2013 it showed a different facet with a newly launched project “The Producer’s Series” that presents the producer’s picks spanning from contemporary “classics” to various challenging performances beyond the boundary of music. This festival was one of the major projects presented for years by the Suntory Music Foundation, predecessor of the Suntory Foundation for Arts, and will hence explore creative frontiers of music.
