Private vehicles are only allowed to go as far as the car parks which are located at the entrances to the park. There is, however, an authorised public transport service which can take visitors into the park from the villages of Boí and Espot. This natural space offers a series of walking routes that are adapted for ramblers of all ages and levels. At the Cases del Parc, which are offices located in Boí and Espot, it is possible to find information about signposted routes and the many activities that are organised throughout the year. Using the interpreter guide service is a good way of combining a little hiking with discovering the tremendous natural wealth of this protected space. The route called Carros de Foc (Chariots of Fire) has become one of the park’s main attractions. The various stages of the 55 km route take in nine guarded mountain shelters and there is an accumulated variation in altitude of 9,200 m (www.carrosdefoc.com). As well as the GRs (long distance walking routes) that run through the park, there is also a signposted route for lovers of MTB called Pedals de Foc (Pedals of Fire). This is a 220 km circuit, with a net climb of 5,800 m, which runs around the outside of the National Park (www.pedalsdefoc.com). Camins Vius (Living Paths) offers another interesting route and is an initiative that recovers 230 km of historic paths that run through the area of influence of this natural space. This ring-shaped route passes through the comarques of L’Alta Ribagorça, El Pallars Jussà, El Pallars Sobirà and the Val d’Aran. Àger Punt dʼInformació del Montsec Pl. Of the eleven winter sports centres loca- ted in the Lleida Pyrenees, six offer alpine skiing (Baqueira Beret, Boí Taüll Resort, Gran Pallars Espot Esquí, Gran Pallars Port-Ainé, Port del Comte and Tavascan) and seven offer Nordic skiing (Baqueira Beret, Aransa, Lles de Cerdanya, Tavas- can, Sant Joan de l’Erm, Tuixent-la Vansa and Bosc Virós), with the Baqueira Beret and Tavascan resorts offering both moda- lities. As well as skiing, in winter, it is also possible to enjoy a series of other snow- related activities at these resorts, while in summer, the majority of these centres offer a wide range of outdoor adventure activities. THE LLEIDA PYRENEES, A WORLD OF SNOW The Lleida Pyrenees offer the ideal place for those who wish to include adventure sports in their holiday programme. In spring and summer, as well as white water sports, it is possible to: row on the calm waters of the local reservoirs; learn to climb on the numerous marked climbing routes; go canyoning; learn to paraglide; or enjoy splendid high mountain crossings with the family, either on foot, mountain bike or horseback. Numerous companies specialise in offering these activities and also provide material for hire and well-prepared monitors for each modality; everything needed to ensure that visitors enjoy their favourite activities. Bastart (Turismo Verde S.L.) Cover image: J. Bastart; presa de la Restanca (Val d’Aran) Covering an area of around 40,000 ha, this natural space contains around 200 high mountain lakes and a multitude of rivers and waterfalls, all of which lie between peaks that rise to an altitude of over three thousand metres. The Park has two main entry points. One is in the municipal district of Espot, from where it is possible to reach the Escrita and Peguera river valleys, the Estany de Sant Maurici and the Pic dels Encantats (2,747 m) - one of the most emblematic images of the Park - and the Ratera and Amitges lakes, which are surrounded by the Sa- boredo, Amitges and Bassiero peaks. The other entrance is in the Vall de Boí, from where it is possible to visit the Ribera de Sant Nicolau, the Aigüestortes plain, and Llebreta, Llong and Redó lakes. This en- trance also provides access to the upper basin of the Ribera de Caldes and the Negre, Travessani and Monges lakes. They are surrounded by lofty peaks inclu- ding the 3,032 metre high Comaloformo, which is the highest point in the Park. Flora and fauna Above 1,700 m, the landscape is covered by woods of pine and fir, with the Spanish pine being the variety best adapted to the most extreme climatic conditions. As far as fauna is concerned, it is currently possible to find over 200 vertebrate spe- cies inside the park, almost two-thirds of which are birds. Amongst the mammal population, the most significant species are the Pyrenean chamois, roe deer, wild boar, pine marten and marmot. The large birds of prey include the griffon vulture, bearded vulture and golden eagle. El Segre Olympic Park

The creation of this space for the 1992 Olympic Games

gave a great boost to water sports in the local area.

Rafting and canoeing are just two of the sports that

can be enjoyed at the centre. Its main attraction is the

500 m long white water channel with its 6.5 m descent.

This closed circuit is powered by pumps and simulates

all the hazards of a real river. The complex also boasts

another 800 metre channel of calm water where visitors

can enjoy some canoeing. The centre has an information

point where material can be hired, a gymnasium,

changing facilities, a restaurant and monitors. It is also

possible to hire bicycles and trekking poles as there is

also a MTB Centre and a Nordic Walking centre at La

Seu in L’Alt Urgell.

The Mont-rebei gorge

This 500 metre-high wall of rock that was excavated

by the River Noguera Ribagorçana has a footpath cut

out of the rock face. The path is not difficult to reach

and offers breathtaking views of the local scenery.

One of the access points to the gorge is the settlement

of Pont de Montanyana. The other is the hamlet of

Alsamora, which is near the suspension bridge that

spans the Maçana gully. From here on, by following

the signs for the GR, visitors can reach the hermitage

of La Pertusa, in the comarca of La Noguera.

Historic architecture

The Vall de Boí contains eight churches and a hermitage

in the Lombard Romanesque style that were declared

a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. They were

constructed between the 11th and 13th centuries and

in some cases still conserve their original mural

paintings. In other cases, visitors can admire excellent

copies while the originals have been transferred to

the MNAC (National Art Museum of Catalonia) in

Barcelona. The Centre del Ròmanic (Romanesque Art

and Architecture Centre) of the Vall de Boí is in Erill

la Vall. www.centreromanic.com

The paths of Aran

The history, heritage and natural beauty of Aran can be

discovered by walking along various paths whose com-

mon denominator is that they were used by the people

of Aran as communication routes. There are trekking

routes for everyone, with one to two hour walks that

are an invitation to discover Aran and which offer the

possibility of visiting Romanesque churches and museums

and enjoying the traditional festivities and typical pro-

ducts of Aran. www.visitvaldaran.com

The Ecomuseum of the Valls d’Àneu

This museum seeks to visually convey the history and

ways of life of the comarca via a series of spaces set

in different parts of the territory. Casa Gassia is located

in the centre of Esterri d’Àneu and has been maintained

as it used to be. Next door, in Casa Carma, it is possible

to find traditional craft products from the local area. In

Alòs d’Isil, there is a hydraulic sawmill which shows

how wood is transformed after it is cut in the forest.

Cardener and Aigua d’Ora

The small waterfalls which stand at the head of the River

Cardener, the main tributary of the River Llobregat, are

just a kilometre from the village of La Coma. This is the

starting point of a journey to Coll de Port which coincides

with the GR-7 long distance walking route and the Camí

dels Bons Homes, which allows trekkers to follow in the

footsteps of the Cathar monks who crossed the Pyrenees.

At the foot of the Serra dels Bastets i Busa, in the municipal

area of Navès, the River Aigua d’Ora forms a beautiful

valley. There, visitors will find Sant Pere de Graudescales,

an excellent example of 11th century Lombard Romanesque

architecture, with its three apses and octagonal dome.

There is also a group of water mills, a Romanesque style

bridge, a small museum and the monument in memory of

Count Guifré el Pelós.
