1824

In 1824, Johann Siegert had perfected his formula for his ‘Amargo Aromatico’, a medicinal elixir for the soldiers in Simon Bolivar’s Venezuelan army.

1944

Angostura started producing its quality, award-winning rum.

1850

Siegert began exporting

ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters to England, the Caribbean and the USA. A few

years earlier, the first cocktail recipe

called for the use of bitters so Siegert’s

timing could not have been better.

Hovering on the cusp of the

Golden Age of the Cocktail, the use

of ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters as a key ingredient in

cocktails was about to take off around

the world.

1955

Angostura was appointed

manufacturers of ANGOSTURA®

aromatic bitters to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Today the brand remains

the only bitters brand in the world

that can present such credentials.

1875

The production of ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters moved to Trinidad. It started to win awards for excellence around the world and the use of bitters grew with the popularity of the Manhattan.

1960

The popularity of ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters as a culinary ingredient surged in the 1960s.

1980 – By the 1980s, there was a revival in the use of bitters in bars around the world. The rebirth of the ‘cocktail culture’ saw vintage cocktail recipes, most of which included ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters, come back in vogue.

1900s

By early 1900s, the Golden Age of

the Cocktail was in full swing and ANGOSTURA®

aromatic bitters was firmly rooted in the

cocktail cultures of the UK, the US and Europe.

2007

ANGOSTURA® orange bitters was launched

worldwide as the company’s first

innovation in almost 200 years. Today

it is considered to be one of the best orange bitters on

the market.

1912

Angostura was appointed as the official supplier of bitters to His Majesty King George V. Cocktail classics like the Pink Gin, the Manhattan, the Old Fashioned, the Daiquiri and the Martini were hugely popular.

2014

Amaro di ANGOSTURA® was launched with the amaro lover in mind.

2018

Angostura® bitters is voted “Number 1 Selling Bitters” and

“Number 1 Trending Bitters” by Drinks

International.

ANGOSTURA® orange bitters

awarded Platinum Medal by SIP.

1940

The close of Prohibition brought with it a new

phenomenon in the USA – Tiki culture – a

reaction to the wartime rations on spirits.

2015

Amaro di ANGOSTURA® won “Best New Spirit or

Cocktail Ingredient” at Tales of the Cocktail.

ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters IS AN ICONIC BRAND, EASILY RECOGNISED BY ITS YELLOW CAP AND OVERSIZED LABEL.

The secret recipe has remained unchanged for nearly 200 years. Only five people know the whole recipe of 52 natural ingredients and other staff members know individual portions.

ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters is 100% natural with no artificial colours, flavours or additives. Its density, consistency, visual appeal and taste cannot be beaten or replicated, although many have tried.

ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters is globally recognised as an essential bar ingredient; it remains the quintessential and definitive ingredient for classic and contemporary cocktails.

ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters has a royal warrant – a symbol of excellence.

A lesser-known fact is that ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters also trends as an ingredient in cooking. Its complexity and the layers of flavours make it a culinary must-have.

WHY IS THE LABEL SO BIG?

The distinctive over-sized label of ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters has remained unchanged through the decades, coming about entirely by accident. Rushing to get an order out the door, one of the Siegert brothers ordered the bottles, another ordered labels, and when the time came for production, it was discovered that the sizes didn’t match. The brothers decided not to rectify the error, which has led to Angostura owning the most recognisable bitters label around the globe.

ANGOSTURA® orange bitters is the second offering available in the range, introduced in 2007. Made from its own special recipe, ANGOSTURA® orange bitters is a complex blend of tropical oranges and spices.

ANGOSTURA® orange bitters is the soul of an exceptional dry martini. It is a versatile bitters that works incredibly well with vodka, gin and whisky and adds real depth of flavour to rum cocktails.

Its complexity and layers of flavours also makes it a culinary must-have ingredient. World renowned chefs have found that it works particularly well in savoury sauces; it complements seafood dishes and marries well with chocolate.

Since 1824, ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters has been made using the same secret recipe. A selection of herbs and spices are weighed and mixed and then transferred to stainless steel baskets that are hoisted onto large percolators where alcohol is introduced.

The alcohol extracts the flavours from the herbs and spices and the extract is then pumped into holding tanks where other ingredients are added. This is left to marry over a few months after which it is diluted to bottling strength of 44.7% alcohol and sent to the bottling line.

The House of Angostura® has been producing fine rums for 130 years, mastering the art of ageing and blending. The House of Angostura®’s superior rums are helping to redefine the rum category as one with equal sophistication, craftsmanship and artistry to spirits like whisky.

The rums of the House of Angostura® are a treasured legacy, a tribute to the evolution of the rum industry in the Caribbean and the men and women who nurtured it. The House of Angostura® controls its rum manufacturing process from end to end and is renowned for its unique, signature style, which stems from techniques that have stood the test of time. Its premium rums are made from the highest quality molasses, fermented with proprietary yeast cultures, distilled in continuous stills, then aged in charred oak barrels.

Angostura’s distinctive rums are then blended by masters with years of experience and training in original traditions, who closely maintain guarded formulas and techniques. Angostura’s Master Distiller, John Georges, together with the blenders, is involved at every stage to ensure the highest quality and consistency, from molasses selection through to cask selection.

As Master Distiller, Georges says: “Our rums are 100% Trinidadian, made in one distillery on one island. Much like a single malt, only better.”

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE BUTTERFLY

Butterflies have long been associated with Angostura’s rums. The bottles have always carried the iconic butterfly logo of The House of Angostura® on the front label and The House of Angostura® is home to the Barcant Collection of more than 5,000 butterflies. But why?

Well, to ensure that it gets only the best quality sugar cane for its rums, Angostura uses molasses which is produced from sugar cane harvested when the sugar content is at its very highest. The signal that the sugar cane is ripe for rum making is when the butterflies arrive and land on the cane.

AWARDS AND ACCOLADES

Angostura Rum is one of the most awarded rums in the world. It has been crowned The Grand Rum Master by Spirits Business Rum Masters four times out of the seven years the competition has run. In 2016 at The World Spirits Awards each of Angostura’s rums won Gold medals and at the latest San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Angostura® 5 YR old rum scored a Double Gold medal.
