LETTER
Coming from a long line of small business owners, I dedicate this premiere issue to all small businesses in Bryn Mawr. It is their dedi-cation, hard work, and countless hours that help make Bryn Mawr
the remarkable and vibrant community we love.Although every small business deserves support and recognition, I would
like to highlight a few of the small businesses that call Bryn Mawr home.Joe Sr. and Joe Jr. from Pun’s Toys. You will not find anyone who knows
more about every toy from the past to hottest trends today. They know how to select the perfect toy for every child. Every birthday party and Christmas I go in, describe the child, give the age and out walk with a beautifully wrapped package. And every time the gift is a hit.
Charlie and his wonderful staff at Suburban Hardware. With their col-lective knowledge it would seem like there is nothing they cannot fix, from plumbing to household repairs. When I have a particular weed taking over my garden, I walk in with a picture of the problem and walk out with the right stuff.
Carole and her staff from The Shear Touch. Not only did they give my daughter her first haircut, they have been styling all of the Bogosian ladies’ hair for years.
Mr. & Mrs. Fish of John Fish & Sons. With a family-owned business span-ning more than 100 years, this is the place to visit if you need a watch or clock repaired. If you are looking for a special housewarming gift, you will find beautiful pieces not found in any department store. This is the store where I decided to purchase my daughter’s first charm necklace. Keep-sakes are found in John Fish & Sons.
These stores shape our community. They represent who we are as a city, show our values and reflect our traditions. They are also members of the Business Association and Bryn Mawr Beautiful which is responsible for the lovely flower pots and baskets throughout our town. They are instrumental in the success of Bryn Mawr Day, making it our largest community event.
When you are shopping this holiday season, remember to support the people that make Bryn Mawr a beautiful community. Support the busi-nesses that will offer you support in return long after the sale. Give gifts that come with the added value of local support.
Wishing you a safe and happy holiday season. Enjoy Bryn Mawr!
Sincerely, Michelle BogosianBryn Mawr Business Association
Hail to the small business owner

History of the BuildingBryn Mawr Film Institute, a 501(c)(3) non profit Pennsylvania corporation, was founded in 2002 by civic and academic leaders interested in saving the Bryn Mawr Theater, once the anchor of the Bryn Mawr commercial district. A center of community life since 1926, the theater suffered from disrepair and neglect, and was threatened with conversion to a health club franchise.
After spearheading a successful effort to stop the conversion, Bryn Mawr Film Institute purchased the building in December 2004 for $2 million and began a $10 million renovation and restoration program that was complet-ed in 2014. The theater is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The Theater Building
When the theater was built in 1926 it was known as The Seville, and was designed to emulate the movie palaces found in large cities. Ornate lobby chandeliers, intricate ceiling details, the beautiful sky-lit atrium, and the name itself all contributed to the film immersion experience
The architect of the theater, William Harold Lee (1884-1971) was a Phila-delphia architect who designed over 200 theaters, most of which no longer exist. The Seville was one of six movie houses built along the Main Line in the 1920’s. Four of the six still exist as movie theaters, in varying degrees of alteration from their original designs. With its still-intact façade and atri-um, Bryn Mawr Film Institute retains one of the highest levels of integrity of this group.

LIVING
By the 1950’s, The Seville had come to be known as the Bryn Mawr The-ater. While the configuration of the interior remained virtually unchanged, much of the glamour began to fade. In the atrium, the once-glorious sky-light and second story arcade were concealed beneath a dropped acous-tical tile ceiling. On the façade, the original marquee was replaced with a larger, neon version.
Any remaining original splendor of the 1920’s movie house was lost in 1978 when the auditorium was divided into two smaller theaters. Yet an-other marquee was installed that bore no relationship to the original mar-quee and was in jarring contrast to the classical façade.
Increased competition from the new multiplex theaters meant dwindling audiences for the Bryn Mawr Theater during the 1990’s. When the na-tional theater chain that managed the theater went bankrupt in 2001, it looked as though the building would be leased by a gym franchise. The alterations required to convert the building to a gym meant it would never again function as a movie theater.
That’s when the campaign for Bryn Mawr Film Institute began. The preservation and restoration of the theater building was an integral
part of BMFI’s mission. In addition to the historic importance of the build-ing, the proven power of a downtown movie theater to drive economic development and stimulate job creation in surrounding restaurants and retail businesses makes a movie theater essential for older town centers.
The award-winning firm of Voith Mactavish Architects, LLP developed a Master Plan that outlined a three-phase restoration and modernization strategy. Phase I renovations began as soon as BMFI took possession of the building: the lobby was refurbished; new projection and sound equipment were installed; the electrical and heating systems were modernized; a new

café was built. Phase I was completed in March, 2005 when the new, his-torically resonant marquee was installed. Renovations continued in Phase II with the creation of the multimedia education space, culminating in the restoration of the stunning atrium skylight. Phase III introduced the two new, state-of-the art theaters with stadium seating, large-format screens, high definition p ojectors, and new seating in all four theaters.
BMFI celebrated its grand reopening with the ACTION! Dedication Cel-ebration on Sunday, April 27, 2014. The completion of additional two screens marked the end of the $10 million renovation and expansion proj-ect. This final $5.5 million phase doubled the number of available screens and is the culmination of the organization’s twelve-year quest to protect, renovate, and expand the historic 1926 theater building. The two new the-aters each seat 163 and feature large-format screens and a combination of stadium and sloped seating. The two previously existing theaters were also renovated as part of this phase of construction and feature new seats, lighting, carpeting, screens, and fixtu es, and sound and light buffers.

Celebrating Bryn Mawr Day
The fifth annual Bryn Mawr Day is scheduled for September 12, 2015.
This celebration honors all of Bryn Mawr’s businesses and is the community’s largest sin-gle-day event.
“Bryn Mawr Day is a great start to the fall season,” said event director Michelle Bogosian. “It is gratifying to be a part of an event that invigorates the spirit of Bryn Mawr, as much as Bryn Mawr Day does” she added.
“We have music, food, and activities that the entire family will enjoy,” said Bogosian.

It’s easy to understand why volunteering is so important to a retired Fire Chief of the
Bryn Mawr Fire Company. Jack Thomas served the Bryn Mawr Fire Company for 50 years, 20 years as the Fire Chief. And, even after retiring from the fi e company 19 years ago, Thomas still is active helping the company with fund raising and recruiting new volunteers.
Thomas’ long history of service fits well with the values and traditions of the Fire Company. The Bryn Mawr Fire Company, home to Ladder 23, Engine 23 and Squad 23, for more than 100 years, serves residents of Delaware and Mongomery Counties, responding to more than 700 calls this year.
To keep the tradition going, volunteers are necessary to support three full-time crew members, led by Chief Dan-ny Kincade. Today, although they have the needed 35 vol-unteers, the fi e company is making volunteer recruitment a higher priority.
“I am a firm believer in volun-teering and helping people,” Thomas said. The Fire Com-pany is interesting, rewarding, and challenging work.
The world is a different place, Thomas said, reflectin on how the volunteers for the fi e company have changed. People are busy, the world moves at a faster pace, and volunteers can’t give as much time. “People have so much more to do in life,” Thomas reflects

Aware of everything around her, Marlene is often drawn to objects that others do not notice: patterns in rust; shapes on construction sites; colors in graffiti; the remains of an old building that has been torn down where the patterns and wallpapers of past rooms remain. When she hear prolonged sounds, like the noise or hammering of an MRI machine, she “hears” those sounds in colors on her closed eyelids and wants to recreate them visually with color and movement. Make sure to see her beautiful collection of paintings in the Welcome Gal-lery from November 4-December 7, 2014.
