FOREWORD:

It is a pleasure to know the publication of R&D

Newsletter; Volume 4, Issue 1, 2017. Since its

inception, UPES has a fine tradition of

developing domain specific and industry ready

graduates. UPES has also been continuously

enhancing R&D activities resulting in increased

publications in reputed journals as well as the

number of applications filed for grant if

patents.

In today’s knowledge landscape, research is becoming multidisciplinary and internal/external collaborations help in pooling the varied expertise required for that purpose. This also helps in integrating data, methodologies, perspectives, and concepts from multiple disciplines in order to advance fundamental understanding or to solve real world problems. Funding agencies are also creating initiatives to encourage multidisciplinary research that can be more easily translated to community.

Interdisciplinary research and partnerships require enhanced communication among various researchers and the researchers need to learn to operate in an interdisciplinary environment. UPES has the advantage of a broad spectrum of faculty members involving all engineering, management, economic and legal areas and it is imperative that we develop a sustainable and productive research environment in focused research areas. UPES will continue to strive towards developing our research activities, which will enable us to be innovative in creating technological solutions and support in creating the required policy initiatives.

Functionalized Carbon Nanomaterials (CNT/Graphene) for Advanced Polymer Nanocomposites

V. Punetha, S. Rana, H. J. Yoo, A. Churasia, J. T. McLeskey, M. S. Ramasamy, N. G. Sahoo, J. W. Cho

Progress in Polymer Science 2017, In Press (http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.progpolymsci.2016.12.010)

The fabrication and dispersion of carbon nanomaterials in nanocomposites

is crucial since this affects many of its properties such as electrical and

thermal conductivity, tensile strength and elastic modulus, and thermal

stability. Adaptation of these nanomaterials as commercially significant

products will largely depend on the scalability and reproducibility in

conjunction with their cost of manufacture. This review article collectively

introduces a variety of reactions (e.g. click chemistry, radical

polymerization, electrochemical polymerization, dendritic polymers, block

copolymers, etc.) for functionalization of CNTs and graphene and

fabrication of their polymer nanocomposites. A critical comparison between CNTs and graphene has focused on the

significance of different functionalization approaches on their composite properties. In particular, the mechanical,

electrical, and thermal behaviors of functionalized nanomaterials as well as their importance in the preparation of

advanced hybrid materials for structures, solar cells, fuel cells, supercapacitors, drug delivery, etc. have been discussed

thoroughly.

Swift heavy ions induced nano-grain fragmentation in fluoride thin films

M. Kumar, R. K. Pandey, P. Rajput, S.A. Khan, F. Singh, D.K. Avasthi, A. C. Pandey

Journal of Alloys and Compounds, 2017, 695, 83-90

Influence of the swift heavy ions (SHIs) at various ion fluences in

nanodimensional polycrystalline fluoride thin films (LiF, CaF2 and BaF2) has

been investigated by glancing angle X-ray diffraction (GAXRD),

complemented by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Nano-grain fragmentation

is observed with increasing ion fluences as evident from the increase of the

peak width in GAXRD pattern. It is also observed that after certain fluence

SHIs irradiation, there is a saturation in the nano-grain fragmentation. The track radius and damage cross section are

deduced from peak width and area of the dominant diffraction. The track radii are 5.5 and 14.5 nm, 5.0 and 9.7 nm and

5.5 and 6.5 nm for BaF2, LiF, CaF2, deduced from width and area, respectively. It is noteworthy that the track radius is

found to be higher than the previously estimated from sputtering studies of LiF thin films.

System Reliability Optimization Using Gray Wolf Optimizer Algorithm

A. Kumar, S. Pant,M. Ram

Quality and Reliability Engineering International, 2017, In press

For the past two decades, nature-inspired optimization algorithms have gained

enormous popularity among the researchers. In this work, few complex reliability

optimization problems are solved by using a very recent nature-inspired metaheuristic

called gray wolf optimizer (GWO) algorithm. GWO mimics the chasing, hunting, and

the hierarchal behavior of gray wolves. The results obtained by GWO are compared

with those of some recent and popular metaheuristic such as the cuckoo search

algorithm, particle swarm optimization, ant colony optimization, and simulated

annealing. This comparative study shows that the results obtained by GWO are either

superior or competitive to the results that have been obtained by these well-known metaheuristic mentioned earlier.
