This course is being offered in conjunction with the SCOPA as part of the AOA Electronic Health Records Preparedness Program, the EHR course reflects the strategic goals of the AOA. This course will address the needs of optometrists for the selection and implementation of EHRs, e-prescribing and PQRI. Optometrists have never had more reason to implement EHR systems in their practices and gain “meaningful use”.

Course Learning Objectives:
• To review relevant current federal legislation: HITECH, ARRA, CCHIT, and definitions • To understand how meaningful use will dictate clinical care as part of the global healthcare system • To understand PQRI codes, their clinical use, and changes for 2010 • To understand e-prescribing, how to begin utilizing eRx with patient encounters, and changes for 2011 • To demonstrate how eRx enhances clinical care and patient safety: drug - drug, drug allergy, drug
dosage, and drug formulary checks • To review “meaningful use” criteria • To recognize the benefits to patient care through utilizing electronic health records • To understand how electronic health records can enhance patient care in each area of an optometric office • To understand the next steps your office should take to move toward implementing electronic health records
and to move toward becoming a meaningful user
Overview of Course Outline: I. Review of current relevant federal legislation • American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 • Certification Commission for Health Information Technology • Meaningful use standards
II. What is PQRI • Review of current PQRI / CPT II codes for eye care • Review how to submit the CPT II codes • Review of how to utilize these codes in clinical care of patients • How PQRI improves clinical care
III. What is electronic prescribing (E-Rx) • Definition and overview of electronic prescribing • Discussion of active medication and allergy lists • Discussion of how it can be utilized to enhance and improve safety and quality • Explanation of how to get started and how to submit CPT II codes for of
patient care the E-Rx incentive program • Discussion of “The National ePrescribing Safety Initiative (NEPSI)” and its goals
to reduce the staggering number of medical errors
IV. Electronic Health Records • Enhancing clinical care through the use of EHRs • Discussion of medication reconciliation • Discussion of new proposed rule for recording patient demographics • Review of data queries and significance in clinical care • Discuss integration of automated instruments and their role in increasing accuracy • Discussion of proposed rule for recording vital signs and smoking status
and reducing medical errors • Electronic management of current and past problem list • Improving patient care with real time medical alerts which include clinical decision • Utilization of electronic ophthalmic lab orders to improve accuracy and reduce
making rules errors.
Presenter: Dr. Jay Henry Dr. Henry obtained both his Doctor of Optometry and his Master of Science in Physiological Optics Degrees from the Ohio State University. Dr. Henry is a Clinical Assistant Professor as well as a Primary Care Extern Preceptor for The Ohio State University College of Optometry. He currently practices at Hermann and Henry Eyecare, a group private practice in Pickerington, Ohio. Dr. Henry speaks nationally and has published numerous articles on topics related to Electronic Health Records, paperless practices, e-prescribing and ocular disease. Dr. Henry was the first optometrist in the nations to use optometric specific software for e-prescribing. He has vast knowledge of the current optometric software choices as well as advanced technology used in eyecare.
