e World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) Foundation aims to raise and manage funds to support scientifi c and educational projects for the benefi t of practicing veterinarians around the world.

Veterinary care in Africa - e challenge and the oppor-tunity

Africa is the world‘s second largest continent and contains several of the fastest growing countries in the world. Un-fortunately it is also plagued by many of the world‘s most dangerous diseases. Veterinarians work hard but their numbers are few; they are geo-graphically isolated and o en held back by a chronic lack of training, CE and support.

It is these problems that the WSAVA Foundation will address through AFSCAN, a ground-breaking scheme to advance standards of veterinary care right across Africa. While the challenge is great, so is the opportunity to help advance the veterinary profession across the continent and, in so doing, improve the lives of millions of animals and humans.

Introducing AFSCAN

AFSCAN, a new ground-breaking project, has been developed and led by the WSAVA Foundation with support from global ani-mal health company Zoetis and a Consorti-um of members.

It will harness global support to achieve the main goal: to facilitate the creation of a sustainable network of com-

panion animal veterinarians and specialist groups in Africa in order that they go on to form new small

animal veterinary associations (SAVAs) across the continent.

It is the creation of these veterinary associations, leading to enhance-ments in collaboration, training

and best practice sharing, which has proved pivotal in driving enhancements in overall stan-dards of veterinary care in other regions of the world AFSCAN will support the collaboration of these groups in key areas, including: e provision of grant funding

for specifi c veterinary projects Increasing support and coordi-

nation of rabies control projects and setting up new projects

e expansion of training and CE pro-grammes for veterinarians and other veteri-

nary professionals e support of surveillance systems to monitor infe-

ctious and parasitic diseases in companion animals e quest for new funding opportunities and co-operation

with current and future Consortium members
