College

The Bromfords English department has a committed staff with a range of expertise.

We focus on improving both the verbal and written communication skills of students

and preparing them for an ever-changing world and workforce.

All Key Stage 3 students have 3 hours of English a week, Year 8 students also have

an extra literacy hour. There is a clear focus on supporting students with targeted

spelling and literacy initiatives, as well as challenging students to ensure that they

are achieving their full potential in English.

At Key stage 4 students following mainstream courses all have 4 hours of English a

week. The GCSE course students complete will be dependent on their needs in this

subject, and will be equivalent to either one or two GCSEs. The course will cover a

full range of texts including poetry, plays, speaking and listening and novels.

Students will be encouraged to develop their independent learning skills and read a

range of texts in their personal time.

At A Level we offer a choice of two courses: A Level Literature and A Level

Language & Literature. Both are academically demanding courses that encourage

students to develop their skills in reasoning, analysis and communication. The

knowledge and skills gained through AS and A level English will benefit studies in

many degree courses.

There are many career opportunities for students who have studied English at a

higher level:
