Throughout the early parts of the novel the residents of the ward were portrayed to be innocent
men, who for the most part always did as they were told, and the hospital staff was displayed as a
malicious group of wretched beings who seemingly lived to make the lives of the patients worse (of
course thats through a patients perspective). However, McMurphys admittance was seen by the
patients as a coming of a messiah as his arrival sparked new life among the patients granting them back
their individuality and will. Through the length of the novel McMurphy progressively builds the
individuality and will of the patients to be stronger and stronger, but as previously established the
reader first witnesses this newfound sense of boldness when the patients band together in efforts to
watch the World Series. From the readers perspective the instance displays a force for good, the
patients rising above a nefarious body, the hospital staff. Triumph over a villainous group always carries
with it importance; this victory brought with it more confidence for the patients, but for the reader
comes a bettered understanding of the novel as a whole, for the novel illustrates for the reader that the
unbridled will of an outgoing man may triumph over nearly any oppressive force. The first occurrence in
which the underdog, the patients, achieves some sort of victory over the behemoth opponent, the staff,
illuminates for the reader the novels meaning, that an oppressive force can be broken by the will of
many. This happening just acted as a window for the reader to begin to understand the novel as a
whole, as the novel continues to build on the theme of rising against oppression and as the novels
conculsion approaches the reader realizes that the World Series incident began the transformation of
the patients, thus rendering it an illuminating point in the novel.

in which the underdog, the patients, achieves victory over the staff illuminates the novels meaning, that
an oppressive force can be broken by lesser beings. This happening acted as a window for the reader to
understand the novel entirely, building on the theme of rising against oppression. The reader realizes
that the World Series incident began the transformation of the patients, thus rendering it an
