50 Stories of Famous People: Medical ProfessionalsTsuen Wan Chiu Chow Public School
Wan Yau Yau
One of the stories I like most is about Hua Tuo. He was very hardworking and studied medicine day and night in order to enrich his knowledge. This story tells us that if we put more effort into what we are after, we will be rewarded. I think this series is very good for students to develop their reading skills and to foster their values.

Remember, you don’t need to finish reading the whole book. Just find something that interests you and read it. You can even invite your friends to make the different objects together and have a competition. I’m sure you will have lots of fun.

“50 Stories of Famous People” is a set of readers that tells the stories of famous people from around the world, like George Washington, Yue Fei and William Shakespeare. The writer wants us to learn from those famous people, especially from their personal qualities such as being hardworking and patriotic.
A papercraft book, oh no! It would be boring for most boys and definitely for girls. This was my first impression when I took up the book. But when I turned over the pages and saw the words ‘flying things’, I changed my mind as such practical flying objects are so amazing for boys. The book uses simple instructions to guide you through all stages of making flying paper toys such as planes, birds, origami models and kites. The text can be easily understood especially with the help of the clear illustrations. It not only prepares some templates for you to follow, but also provides technical tips to achieve different results and includes step-by-step diagrams as well as photos of finished products. All these make you feel the instructions can really help to make the beautiful paper objects, and more importantly, you can do it.

Before I read this book, I had little idea about what big cats were. After reading the book, I have learnt lots of interesting facts about different types of big cats, including their physical features and habits, as well as myths and legends associated with them. The part that interests me most is their hunting skills. They know how to use trees and tall grass to hide themselves. Some big cats hunt together by spreading out and surrounding their prey. I think they are very clever.
Would you like to draw better? If you do, this book can help you do it by yourself. It teaches you many simple, useful drawing skills that would enable you to draw people and animals well. There are many techniques that help bring your figures to life. To make your pictures appear more three-dimensional, you can use different shading techniques such as making highlights …

In my opinion, Egyptians are healthy people as they eat lots of vegetables like tomatoes, cabbage and eggplant. However, I would not want to live in Egypt as the weather is quite hot throughout the year.

Moreover, the book clarifies some of the most commonly misunderstood historical facts. For example, most people think that Hadrian’s Wall was built by Julius Caesar. The truth is that it was built by the emperor Hadrian. I recommend this book to primary school students.

‘Seeing is believing’. Do you believe everything you see? If you do, look again. In fact, our eyesight is often not as reliable as we would like it to be. This book introduces you to different kinds of optical illusions, eye tricking experiments, flipbooks and lots of other tests. Why do straight lines appear like bent ones? How can you make water invisible? What I have learnt from this book is that our eyes are easily tricked by illusions, so we are not seeing what we see sometimes. This book also comes with a CD-ROM that includes many useful internet links.
Minerals are the basic building blocks of the earth. This colourful book with specially designed see-through pages is great for students who are interested in the study of rocks and minerals. It covers mountains and volcanoes, ancient fossils, spectacular gems and even rocks from outer space. The rocks that are most commonly found on earth such as igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks are also introduced. The more you understand about the earth, the better you will treasure it and try to protect it. Children who are curious about the natural world around them must have a look at this book.

Science at the ZooTsuen Wan Chiu Chow Public School
Ms. Chan Oi Wan
‘Animal Homes and Habitats’ is one of the topics in this book. It is about what keeps a polar bear cool in summer. In order to stay warm, polar bears which live in the wild have a thick layer of blubber. But in the zoo, since the climate is warmer, they don’t develop such a layer. Therefore, they will feel much cooler in summer! It is interesting, isn’t it?

The reason I recommend this book is that it helps you enrich your knowledge and opens your eyes to how animals are kept and how they adapt to the environment in the zoo. Not many people really understand the importance of zoos to some kinds of animals and how the zookeepers take care of them. But once you read this book, you can discover it all!
What’s more, most of the tricks are easy and interesting. You will learn how to send a secret letter, break a pencil into two halves with one finger and a newspaper. The methods are simple, but they will surely not only bring you a great surprise, but also inspire you to read more science books.
