I’m Stuart Murphy and welcome to English National Opera.

At ENO there are a few values we live by– we strive to be world class ineverything we do – in what we perform on stage and in the pit, in how we treat our customers and how we treat one another inside thecompany.

The RoleReporting to the Flys Manager and the Senior Flymen, the Flyman will be responsible for ensuring all aspects of the Flysdepartment practice are supported to the highest possible standards. We are looking for Flymen to support us during our Opera Season on either x2 12 week contracts or a 33 week fixed term contract.

£37,225.76 (pro rata per annum)

This appointment will be made on merit, but we believe that diversity strengthens and enriches us, and that it is theresponsibility of everyone at ENO to make the arts and cultural sector a more diverse and equal place. Your duties will include:• Assisting the Senior Flymen with the fit up and build of all flown scenic items.• Participate in the full range of Flyman duties when required, including Loading and unloading counterweights,

operating and securing the counterweight hauling lines, breasting and brailling all scenic items and lighting barsfrom the suspended side and front bridges, measuring out and rigging motors in the grid area, to operate thelighting batten motors and carrying out live cues during rehearsals and performances.

• Support with loading and unloading scenic equipment in order to assist the Senior Flymen with the efficient deliveryof scenic items. This will include working on stage, in all ENO venues and other ENO spaces as required.

• To ensure that all activities are carried out in a safe working environment in accordance with the company’s healthand safety policy.

PURPOSE OF JOB

To take responsibility for all aspects of scenic flying for productions and projects, fit-ups, rehearsals, performances, and change-overs. To support the Senior Flymen, Flys Manager and Production Managers and take initiative for builds, changeovers andperformances. The Flyman is to assist and support the technical and production management teams to ensure a full range ofscenic services including Flys and Stage is provided to ENO, visiting and hiring companies. Also assisting to realise the technicalaspects of transport, packing, construction and running of shows allocated to them. This includes performances and get-ins/get-outs both at the London Coliseum and any other venue the company may rehearse, perform or store productions.

The Flyman will be expected to use his/her initiative and work to the highest standards with an understanding of both the technicaland artistic aspirations and requirements of a production, as well as the ability to build and rig truss and chain hoists. To be able tooperate fixed speed motors also.He/she will have a “hands on” approach to the job combining high quality technical knowledge and experience with a professionalattitude.

Though the primary cover areas for the Flyman is the fly rail, loading galleries, brailing bridges and grid area, he/she will bescheduled to work in any area in the Technical Department and outside venues.

As a Flyman you will be responsible for assisting with the rigging of all vari-speed, fixed speed and manual chain hoists and anytrussing requirements for each of the shows as well as any and all rigging services to ENO.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

• You must have experience of working with a counterweight flying system, have the ability to haul and stop a counterweight setat varying speeds and know how to apply a rope brake.

• You must have knowledge of rigging and preferably be trained to a recognised rigging standard. Be able to assist in thepreparation, organisation and building of truss and rigging on stage.

• Assist in any work taking place in the grid, measuring, rigging and operating fixed speed chain hoists, rigging and cabling allchain hoist equipment.

• To carry out any task within his/her capability and skills, as scheduled in the Flys, on the Coliseum stage or any other venue whichthe company may perform.

• To assist the Flys Manager, Senior Flymen and Production Managers in running of the Flys areas to realise the technicalrequirements of allocated productions, ensuring high technical and artistic standards are maintained.

• To work alongside the Senior Flymen, other technicians as needed in preparation, operation and storage of equipment.• To consult with other members of the Technical and Production Department in regard to all Stage and Flys related activities.• Under the instruction of the Flys Manager, Senior Flymen and Production Managers, to assist in the preparation of equipment,

tools and hardware for daily work calls and to ensure the smooth running and changeover of the repertoire.

• To assist in keeping and updating daily records of plots and cueing systems for shows for production show files.• To abide by the Stage Department schedule as agreed.• To assist in all aspects of scenic flying effectively and safely during fit-ups, rehearsals, performances, get-outs and maintenance

periods.• To liaise with Flys Manager, Senior Flymen and Production Managers as necessary to ensure production-related information is

compiled, acted upon and shared with the appropriate personnel.• Assist with the flying of production-related scenery in rehearsal rooms, workshops, storage areas and other ENO spaces and

venues as required.• Participate in the full range of Stage Technician duties when required, including setting and striking of scenery on stage, setting

and striking prop items, loading/unloading scenic equipment. This may include working in all ENO venues and other ENO spacesas required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

Essential• Previous professional, large-scale theatre experience at a senior level in a stage capacity and an excellent understanding of

stagecraft and theatre practice. • Excellent knowledge and understanding of current scenic construction practice and scenic equipment. • Excellent knowledge and practical experience of safe working practices within a theatrical environment; a practical working

knowledge of Health & Safety legislation including LOLER and PUWER with the ability to carry out effective risk assessments, method statements

• The ability to read and interpret ground and stage plans using CAD and other software. • The ability to work at height, use stage-related access equipment and PPE. • The ability to work as part of a team and independently, under minimum supervision. • A proactive, flexible, collaborative and conscientious approach to work with an open mind to new or different ways of working. • Good punctuality and the ability to set an example to others, exhibiting a professional attitude at all times. • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to work well under pressure. • The ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with colleagues and staff at all levels.

Desirable• Industry-recognised certificates in rigging, stagecraft and Health & Safety. • The ability to use working at height equipment such as harnesses and work positioning equipment. • Excellent IT skills. • Touring Experience.
