Jesus Christ fulfilled the prophecies and promises of what God had revealed to his Chosen People, the Jews, in the Old Testament. This is why there is such a close connection between Judaism and Catholicism, the world's two revealed religions. In fact, Jesus himself and his closest followers, including the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Paul, were all Jewish. And most of the first Christian communities sprang up in the soil of Jewish communities that were already established in the cities of the Roman Empire. Yet, many of the Jews at the time of Christ did not believe in Jesus; they decided to wait for a different Savior. Therefore Christianity and Judaism became separate. It was painful for St Paul, as he explains in today's Second Reading, to see so many fellow Jews not accepting Jesus as their Savior. But he draws comfort from looking at the situation from God's perspective. The disbelief of some Jews actually created an opportunity to preach about the one true God to non-Jews, people St Paul calls Gentiles, or pagans, who were living in the darkness of natural - not revealed - religion. In other words, St Paul sees God working even through the stubborn disbelief being exhibited by some of his Chosen people. God turns their rejection of him into a means of salvation for the Gentiles. And Paul is also confident that God will somehow, in the end, even be able to rescue his first Chosen People, the Jews, in addition to his second Chosen People, the Church. He doesn't understand fully how God will work this out but is certain that God's infinite power and mercy will guide history with wisdom and faithfulness. St Paul lives confidently and passionately in the present moment because he knows that God will take care of the future. We should do the same. We can have long-term confidence in God because God thinks long-term.

August 20: Feast of St. Bernard (1090-1153) Advisor of Popes, defender of the faith, reformer of a monastic

order, Scripture scholar, theologian & eloquent preacher – Western Europe’s “Man of the 12th Century.” St. Bernard dogs

were actually named after a Swiss/Italian hospice named in honor of the saint.

August 21: Feast Day of St. Pope Pius X (1835-1914) Born to a poor Italian family, known for his humility, gentle-ness, and warmth of people, who encouraged the frequent re-

ception of Holy Communion, especially by children. On the 11th anniversary of his election as Pope,

Europe was plunged into WW I. August 21: On 8/19/1988, President Ronald Reagan signed a

Proclamation declaring August 21 as NATIONAL SENIOR CITIZENS DAY.

This day recognizes the achievements in science, medicine, psychology and much more of our Nation’s Senior Citizens,

and encourages them to live their lives to the full and as independently as possible.

August 22: Feast Day of THE QUEENSHIP OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY.

Pope Pius XII declared this feast day in 1954. In an encyclical, the Pope pointed out that Mary deserves this title because

she is the mother of God, and closely associated with Jesus’ redemptive work.

Prayer for Expectant Mothers

Dear Father, we ask you to protect the little babies who are being knit together in their mothers’ wombs. Comfort their mothers & fathers

during the time they are growing & develop-ing. Lord Jesus, give these smallest of per-sons the strength to come into this world, to

fully participate in your creation. Send your Holy Spirit to infuse their souls with love for you. After long, healthy, &

loving lives, bring them safely home to your heavenly kingdom.

Amen.

Tuition Angels

On behalf of all the St. Mary’s students that have benefited from the Tuition Relief Angel Program, St. Mary’s School and Church would like to extend a heartfelt thank you, to all of the individuals that have given so generously to this program.

You have helped make a Catholic education possible to some beautiful souls that have been entrusted in our care.

Due to the Pandemic, there are families struggling to keep their children enrolled

in St. Mary’s School. In order to help these families,

we have initiated the

Tuition Relief Angels

If you are able and would like to help these families, please drop off your donation at

the Parish office or donate on-line at: www.stmarys.tn.org

click “Donate Now”

No donation is too small.

This note is to the individuals and families who were generous enough to donate to the Angels’ Relief Program. We have 3 children who attend St. Mary’s and Sacred Heart, and your donations have made it possible for our children to continue their Catholic education. From the bottom of our heart, we would like to thank you. Your generosity has touched our souls, and we promise to pay this gift forward. You will be in our prayers – our daily prayers, forever.

Thank you and may God bless you! ~ A grateful St. Mary’s family

Home Touch Phone Ministry

During this pandemic, many of us have found

ourselves isolated from family & friends.

I want to introduce myself.

My name is Phyllis Marshall and my phone number is 731-668-5555.

I have a phone ministry called Home Touch.

I call parishioners that might enjoy a phone call just

for touching base with the “outside” world.

If you are recovering from surgery, illness, or have

no one in your home to talk with, please call me.

I will call you once a week just to chat and share the

love God has for us.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

A Prayer for Protection in time of Pandemic O Mary,

you always brighten our path as a sign of salvation & of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the

Cross, took part in Jesus’ pain while

remaining steadfast in faith.

O loving Mother,

you know what we need, & we are confident you will provide for us as at Cana in Galilee.

Intercede for us with your Son Jesus, the Divine Physician,

for those who have fallen ill,

for those who are vulnerable,

and for those who have died.

Intercede also for those charged with protecting the

health and safety of others and

for those who are tending to the sick and seeking a cure.

Help us, O Mother of Divine Love,

to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who took upon himself our sufferings and carried our

sorrows, so as to lead us, through the Cross, to

the glory of the Resurrection.

Amen.

Under thy protection we seek refuge, O Holy Mother of God. In our needs, despise not our petitions, but deliver us always

from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Amen.
