• What happened in the first chapter of the story?
• What characters were we introduced to?
When we make inferences while
reading, we are using the evidence that is available
in the text to draw a logical conclusion

• What meanings can you pick out from the text? Use you background knowledge to help you make inferences.
The text tells me that Elliot’s home is on a farm.
If it is darkening at 4.30pm it must be winter.
I think the text suggests that Elliot is lonely and has no one to care for him.
TASK: Use your inference skills to pick out meaning from the text.
Highlight or write down quotes from the text and explain what the meaning is behind them.
Use your background knowledge to help you.

English Lesson 4 LO. To infer meaning from the text

Read pages 11-13.
• What meanings can you pick out from the text?
• Pay attention to how the writer gives extra background information about Elliot’s family.
TASK: Highlight and annotate or make notes page 13 and 14.
Use your inference skills to pick out meaning behind the text.
• Think about the background information we find out about Elliot.
• What thoughts and feelings do you think Elliot has?
• Has your perception of Mrs Porshley-plum changed? Is she a nice person?
Example:I think Mrs Porshley-Plum is very insensitive because she chose to speak about her business ideas at Elliot’s Nans funeral. The text says ‘she had whispered to Josie at the graveside about her new property-development business and how the farm was sitting on a valuable piece of land’.
Mrs Porshley-Plum doesn’t seem to care that his Nan has died and only cares about her business opportunity and how much money she will get from doing this.

• Jack, a poor country boy, trades the family cow for a handful of magic beans, which grow into an enormous beanstalk reaching up into the clouds. Jack climbs the beanstalk and finds himself in the castle of an unfriendly giant. The giant senses Jack's presence and cries, “Fee, fie, fo, fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman!” Outwitting the giant, Jack is able to retrieve many goods once stolen from his family, including an enchanted goose that lays golden eggs. Jack then escapes by chopping down the beanstalk. The giant, who is pursuing him, falls to his death, and Jack and his family prosper.
