Once students feel comfortable with their English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, they should register for

college-level writing classes. Students have 2 options:

Option 1: Take the WritePlacer Placement Exam and choose a college-level writing class based on your score

Option 2: Pass both ESL 040 AND ESL 042 with a C or better and register for ESL 087 without taking the WritePlacer

Placement Exam (Note: students must get a signature from the English Division Chair, Christine Tabone, or from Leila Palis)

prerequisite: appropriate WritePlacer test score

ESL 087: Preparatory Academic Writing II (equivalent of ENG 081)

prerequisite: appropriate WritePlacer test score, a C or better in ESL 077 or ENG 071, or a C or better in ESL 040

AND ESL 042

ESL 097: Preparatory Academic Writing III (equivalent of ENG 091)

prerequisite: appropriate WritePlacer test score or a C or better in ESL 087 or ENG 081

ENG 107: First-Year Composition (equivalent of ENG 101)

prerequisite: appropriate WritePlacer test score or a C or better in ESL 097 or ENG 091

ENG 108: First-Year Composition (equivalent of ENG 102)

prerequisite: a C or better in ENG 107 or ENG 101
