OVERVIEW
New Alberta English Language Arts Resources This list of English language arts resources, Kindergarten to Grade 9, contains resources that have been authorized for use in Alberta schools. Alberta Learning selects and authorizes the best possible instructional materials for the implementation of approved programs of study. The resource authorization categories are basic, authorized teaching or support, and the status is noted for each resource.
Basic learning resources are those student learning resources authorized by Alberta Learning as the most appropriate for addressing the majority of outcomes of the course(s) or substantial components of the course(s); or the most appropriate for meeting general outcomes across two or more grade levels. Support learning resources are those student learning resources authorized by Alberta Learning to assist in addressing some of the outcomes of the course(s) or components of the course(s); or to assist in meeting the outcomes across two or more grade levels. Authorized Teaching resources are those teaching resources identified as the best available resources to support the implementation of programs of study and courses; they may be teacher guides to accompany student resources or teacher professional resources. The authorized teaching guides are listed with the student resources, while the authorized teaching professional resources are listed at the end of the booklet.
These Alberta authorized resources were selected from the English language arts resource list approved by the Western Canadian Protocol (WCP). The WCP review of resources began in fall 1997 and was completed in spring 2001. This list of these new Alberta English language arts resources is organized by grade, Kindergarten to Grade 9. The WCP categories used as organizers are integrated resources, series, book collections, individual student resources, and individual teaching resources.
Note: Alberta Learning strongly recommends that teachers read all selections in the student texts and all activities in the teacher guides prior to using them with students. Careful consideration should be given to the sensitivities of both the student audience and the community.

INTEGRATED RESOURCES
CrossroadsThis integrated resource, consisting of student anthologies and accompanying teacher's guides, offers a largeselection of Canadian materials, complemented by a variety of international texts. The resource provides a varietyof opportunities for students to experience the six language arts and to use the language arts across thedisciplines.
The four anthologies, one for each of Grades 7, 8, 9, and 10, feature a wide range of Canadian selections withan emphasis on western Canadian texts, including Aboriginal and multicultural perspectives. Each anthologycontains a main table of contents organized thematically and an alternate table of contents organized around broadtopics, such as humour and satire. The activity-based anthologies are organized into six main units: PersonalFocus, Science and Technology, Media Perspectives, Issues, and two genre units. Each unit features aunit-at-a-glance page that identifies key learning outcomes and provides end-of-unit reflection activities that formthe basis for formative evaluation. There are cross-curricular links throughout.
The four teacher's guides, one binder for each of Grades 7, 8, 9, and 10, are companion references to theirrespective student anthologies. They provide: unit overviews with goals and teacher support for a wide range ofstudent learning activities; curricular goals that are linked with the general learning outcomes in a correlationguide; strong support for anthology selections and process-oriented activities; rubrics, language masters, blackline masters, and a wide assortment of assessment and evaluation tools for a wide range of activities;suggested ESL support and adapted activities to challenge learners and to support struggling learners; andfollow-up suggestions and strategies for students needing help in specific areas.
• All four student anthologies have an appealing layout with colourful visuals and offer extensive Canadiancontent at an average readability level, with options to adapt or extend activities for a variety of student learningneeds, including ESL. They contain a diverse and balanced representation of cultures, ages, and gender.• The teacher's guides provide a rich source of student learning activities. The effectiveness of the guides can beenhanced through careful planning to ensure that the key learning outcomes receive appropriate emphasis and thatstudents learn to use the teacher-modelled strategies and become independent learners. The activities in thelanguage conventions sections will be most effective if students are taught how knowledge of languageconventions can help them solve problems with their written expression.• Without an index, it may be difficult to locate specific activities in the teacher's guides.
