SUPPLIES

• For this class, you will need pens or pencils, a binder for handouts with loose leaf, and a coil scribbler with 100-140 pages for your writing response notebook ($1.00 at the Dollar Store or $1.25 at the school store). In addition, you will be required to bring any assigned texts you may be reading in class, as well as a personal reading book for silent reading.

• All supplies should be with you for every class. Not having the supplies listed about will result in you being marked as unprepared for class.

MISSING ASSIGNMENTS• I understand that life happens and sometimes it is difficult to meet all of your deadlines.

However, you’re now in High School and will soon be entering the work force. As a result, time management is going to become more and more important in your life, and you’re going to become held more and more accountable for failing to meet deadlines. That said, if you feel you can not meet a deadline for this class, please see me as early as possible, and I MAY give you an extension, based on the reason and whether you’ve failed to meet deadlines in the past. NEVER ask for an extension on the day the assignment is due unless it’s completely unavoidable.

• “What happens if I just don’t hand an assignment in?”

• In the event that I do not get an assignment from you, I will speak with you individually to see why and I MAY decide that you need some extra help (although, if you need extra help, you should see me BEFORE an assignment is due). In the end, though, if you do not hand an assignment in, you will receive a zero.

• Note: When asked why you didn’t hand in an assignment, I am MUCH more likely to give you a ONE TIME extension if you don’t treat me like an idiot with a clearly made up excuse. Instead, act like the young adult you are, be honest, and tell me you forgot or whatever the reason actually is you didn’t do it.

“What do I do if my printer breaks or if I run out of ink? “

• Simple… E-Mail it! You all have access to a school e-mail and I’m sure you all have personal e-mail addresses. Attach the document to an e-mail and send it to [email protected] . No internet? Put it on a flash drive and take it to school with you. I will NOT accept this as a valid reason for not handing in an assignment on time.

LATE FOR CLASS/BATHROOM BREAKS

Late:

•If you’re a few minutes late and I have already marked attendance, then it will be marked as a late and will not be changed. If, however, you’re a few minutes late and I haven’t gotten to do attendance yet for whatever reason, then congratulations! I won’t mark you late. You’re welcome.*

•If I notice this policy being abused, and the same students are constantly coming a couple of minutes late and hoping I haven’t marked attendance yet, then I will change this rule and will close the door as soon as the bell rings and you’ll be marked late.

Bathroom:

•If we’re in the middle of an in-class discussion, or I’m in the middle of asking for volunteers to do something, please do not raise your hand and ask to use the washroom. Wait until the end of the discussion and I’ll ask to go then.

•If it’s such an emergency that you absolutely cannot wait five minutes until we’re finished the discussion, then just go to the washroom, but make sure I see you leaving so I know where you are.

PLAGIARISM• Academic dishonesty is a serious

offence; plagiarism or cheating of any sort will result in a zero on associated assignments, tests, or projects. Plagiarism includes copying work of another without crediting the source, or copying another student’s work and submitting it as your own.

• It is VERY easy for me to detect when you plagiarise somebody else’s work. DON’T DO IT!

FORMATIVE FEEDBACK• Not all work completed in class will go toward your final mark.

There will be numerous assignments throughout the year that will be used to build your skills in different areas before having a summative assessment. Work that is formatively assessed will be marked on a 4 letter grade system:

• A: You’ve got it! You’ve successfully shown that you can meet the outcomes and are prepared for summative assessments.

• B: Almost got it. Your work is either missing a few details that show full understanding, or displays a few mistakes throughout.

• C: Showing basic understanding of outcome, but requires more effort to meet requirements.

• D: Very little evidence of understanding of outcome is displayed

NUMBER OF SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS

• Throughout this semester, we will do a total of 10-12 summative assessments. These assessments are likely to include the following:

• In-Class Debate

• Mock Trial

• Novel Study (3)

• Film Review

• Writing Folder

• Short Story Study

• Essays (2)

• Test(s)

• Final Exam

CELL PHONE POLICY

• From time to time, I may ask you to use your cell phones for research purposes in class. This being the case, I don’t mind you having them in class

• If we’re not working on something that requires research on your phone, I shouldn’t see it. That means I shouldn’t see you texting, tweeting, snap chatting, instagramming, on Tinder, or updating your Facebook status at any time.

• If you’re working independently and ask to use your phone to listen to your music with headphones, I may allow you do so, provided that the music isn’t loud enough for others to hear, you don’t have to leave the room to get your headphones, and that it doesn’t prevent you or others from getting your work done.

TALKING POLICY• As long as you’re getting your work done and not disturbing other

students, I am fine with you talking a bit amongst each other during class time. However….

• While I’m talking, you’re not. Likewise, I will not talk over you while you’re addressing the class or responding to questions.

WRITING EXERCISEWrite me a few paragraphs to help get me to know you. What makes you “you?” This is an informal exercise, but please still pay close attention to spelling, grammar, and punctuation, as I will be using this information to guide what needs to be focussed on in the coming week. If you’re having trouble getting started, here are a few ideas to help you out:

•What is your favourite/least favourite subject? Why?

•What are three hobbies that you have?

•Who is your favourite person in the world? Why?

•Have you always lived in this town/city/area? If not, where else have you lived?

•What is the thing you are best at?

•What kind of music, television shows, movies, and books do you like to listen to, watch, and read?

•What is your greatest accomplishment?

•What would you like to learn this year, in this class?

•What mark do you expect to achieve this year? Explain.

•What three things did you do this summer that you have never done before? This can be something big or small, from trying a new sport to travelling to a foreign country.
