english is the only

These days, there are more and more people learning and speaking English. Approximately 1.5 billion people around the world speak English whether as their mother tongue or as a foreign language and this number is still growing. But is speaking only English enough in the multilingual world we live in? First of all, I think that if you want to get a job you have to speak English very well. But if you want to get a very good job or to have a very well paid job you have to know besides English, two or three other foreign languages such as German, French, Italian, Spanish or even an exotic language like Japanese. Speaking only English can`t guarantee an excellent salary or a good position in a company. Or at least, that`s what human resources specialists say. Second of all, if you like travelling a lot you definitely must have a good grasp of other foreign languages. For example a friend of mine went on holiday last year in a small town in the east of France. She was speaking English fluently and she thought that was enough. Her first problems appeared when she had to check into the hotel where she had booked a room. The people from the reception desk didn`t know any English so she had to use gestures and body language. She didn`t enjoy very much the time spent there because she couldn’t interact with the people and she was all alone. Of course, there are people, my cousins for example, who think that knowing English is enough to meet new people, to communicate with teenagers from different countries or to help you find an excellent job. My cousins learn French at school as a second foreign language and they think it`s a difficult language with a lot of rules and exceptions you have to know by heart. In their opinion, knowing French is useless and it can`t bring you any advantages. I am absolutely positive that there are other people who have the same opinion about the other foreign languages too. To sum up, I think that English is not the only foreign language worth learning. The whole process of globalization gives us the chance to live in a world without borders. We can work and travel wherever we want and in many cases knowing only English is not enough. In order to socialise, to better integrate yourself in a community, you have to be ready to face any challenges may appear ... and speaking two or three foreign languages can help you a lot.
