Introduction
English language plays a very major role in development of career at
national or international level. If one has to develop career at national
level then its necessary for the person to learn English and its also very
vital to speak English in such a manner that it is understood by the other
person. When schooling begins, a child is usually taught basics of English in
starting and other native languages are taught after English. The aim of
teaching English at primary level is to attain basic proficiency, as is
required in natural language and developing language as a medium of
gaining more knowledge in coming future. For example China is one of the
country that is known for using Chinese as its official language and this
country is not following the trend of adopting English as national language
but it has been observed that English has become a mandatory subject

from primary level in china since 2003( Multiling.Ed.6,1(2016)). This
example clearly shows that nations have started to teach English at
primary level so that in coming future students would not find it hard to
talk in English. According to Dr Richards English is important to be taught
at primary level so that its easy for students to read things written in
English in coming future such as reading time table of the bus. There are
number of skills that are to be possessed by a person to be employed
according to National Association of Career Educators and Employment
(NACE). In this list, first position is held by communication
skills and to be a good communicator one need to be good in speaking
English so that one can address large number of people. It has also been
said by National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration
(NUEPA) that number of students who opted for Hindi rather than English
grew only by 32%.
Even to be successful at international level, a person needs to have basic
knowledge of communicating one’s thoughts in English as it is first spoken
language by almost 350 million people and it is second language of more
than 430 million people. To go abroad one needs to qualify for number of
exams such as TOFEL, IELTS, PTE. All these tests are conducted only to
check the proficiency of a person in English. Whether one wants to go
abroad for higher studies or for setting own business, an individual need to
prove his or her proficiency in English as it is international language and
person would find it hard to communicate in foreign country if one is not
able to communicate in English. Even if any business unit want to grow at
international level then it is necessary that employees working in that
organisation should have competency to represent company at
international platforms where English is medium of exchange of thoughts.
English is also a language for international affairs as all the official
meetings concerning an international matter are conducted in English.
Even if representative of any nation doesn’t know how to communicate
in English, they need to have a translator with them, who will act as a
mediator to translate thoughts from any language into English. It is also
medium of developing international relations and diplomacy.

The representatives of different nations have to discuss about number of
matters and it becomes easy for them to share their opinions if they have
common medium of exchange. When English was not recognised as
common language for exchange of thought, all the representatives of
nation used to convey in their native language and it became difficult and
expensive to hire translators. After World War one, members of United
Nations recognised English as an official language. The importance of
English as an international language can be known from the fact that more
than half members of United Nation use prefer to use English. (Xhuvani
2017).
In this technological era, most of the commands in computer are written
in English. Almost all programming languages use English keywords and
English is also known as lingua franca of computing whereas other
languages are sources of vocabulary. Out of top ten languages used on
internet, English stands at first place. ( Miniwatts Marketing Group 2010)
Popularity of English as major source of communication can be known
from the fact that even if English is not the native language of a country
still there is at least one newspaper in that country that is published in
English. Moreover, it has been found that for teachers who want to be
proficient in language one must read newspaper so that its easy to teach
the same in classrooms (here language refers to English).
Conclusion
It can be concluded that although 500 years ago English was spoken by five
and seven million people but now it has been recognised as international
language. It is also the common spoken language for many non-English
speakers over the world, and almost a quarter of the globe’s population -
maybe 1½-2 billion people - can understand it and have at least some basic
competence in its use, whether written or spoken. It becomes easy for a
person to communicate with other person belonging to different region by
using English as medium of exchange of thoughts.
