The word noun comes from the Latin word nomen, which means “name.”

Two kinds of nouns
1. Proper noun2. Common noun
Proper noun is a name of a specific person, place, thing or event. A proper noun is always
written in capital letters.Examples: 1. Jomar2. Christmas3. Manila4. Barasoain church
Common noun is a name of a common person, place, thing or event. A common noun is always
written in small letters. Examples:
1. school2. adviser3. church4. city
Now you know about the two kinds of nouns, will you differentiate the two briefly and give your own examples of a proper noun and a common noun?
Nouns are also divided into four special classes:
Concrete noun Collective noun
Abstract noun Compound noun
Concrete noun
Concrete noun is a word used to name anything which has actual physical existence.
Examples: chair, box, car, book, pencil.
Abstract noun
Abstract noun is a word used to name a concept or an idea which has no physical existence. It may be a word used to denote quality, property or action.
Examples: kindness, loyalty, honor, goodness, democracy
Collective noun
Collective noun is a word or words used to identify a collection or group taken as one.
Examples: class, flock, committee, audience, bunch
Compound nouns
Compound noun is a noun that is made up of more than one word.
