/ &here was a small incident on the way home !rom school. was stoned by !our boys and

handled the situation badly. t wasn0t a mugging because they didn0t want to take

anything o! 1alue. t wasn0t an ambush either because already knew they were a!ter me.

t wasn0t re1enge because 0d ne1er seen them be!ore.

2 t was a straight!orward case, could see a!terwards, o! bullying. Four larger boys came

!or a smaller one who was on his own.

3 took the short cut which runs down a narrow path between two !ruit orchids. &here are

hedges on each side, tall enough to protect the trees !rom wind, thick to pre1ent

trespassers !rom stealing !ruit. &he sun seldom reaches down between the hedges. t0s

gloomy and damp, and the weeds under the hedges grow yellow and straggly as they

struggle up towards the light.

4 don0t like walking there, but it is ten minutes quicker i! go round by the ring road. &he

!our youths were behind, 5ostling and sho1ing each other against the spiky hawthorn as

they walked. &hey had sha1ed heads, high laced DM0s, black blaers and mean, narrow

eyes, and they were !rom +osehill %chool.

6 "hen the !irst stone spun past my ear dint turn, did put on a bit o! speed. &he second

stone hit me on the back o! the neck and they were closer than had realied. -t that

point, there were three things could do. could run like hell, or could take no notice,

or could stop and con!ront them. !a1oured the last. was good at diplomacy. ga1e a

talk on it at the dinner hour debating club: 778ritain0s diplomatic role in the east9west

communication00. Four people came and two more 5eered through the window, but Mr

Fowler came in !or the last bit o! my talk and it was well prepared.

8esides, i! ran like hell, 0d be admitting to mysel! that was a!raid. Fear shows.

&hey0d know. *1en i! managed to e1ade !rom them this time, they0d be waiting another

day. -nd another day, it might be worse.

; 8ut when looked back !or con!rontation, they had gone. &he long path was empty.

< &hen, heard sti!led giggles and running !eet !rom inside the orchard. &hey must ha1e

pushed through the dense hedge. %uddenly, they were way ahead, darting through a gap

in the hawthorn.

= looked behind. &here was nobody. *1en a !irst year would ha1e been a help. 8ullies

don0t attack when there0s a witness. #r a teacher. 8ut teachers don0t walk along public

rights9o!9way. &hey go home in battered cars, or on new ten speed racers, in case, they0re

mugged.

/> - hail o! sharp !lints !lew down a tree o1erhead, 0d made the wrong decision. t was too

late !or con!rontation or escape. 5ust had to keep walking along the damp path towards

where they were lurking. (erhaps should ha1e negotiated, should ha1e apologied to

them !or being me. 8ut you can0t apologie to hal!9seen !aces !litting behind the green

lea1es.

// reached the end o! the path without making contact. was out on the cut9de9sac which

loads down to the estate. was sa!e, surrounded by humanity, li1ing people behind

windows, who could see me.

/2 &hat0s e?actly when they pounced, !rom behind a !uchsia bush. -nd they dragged me

down to the pa1ement. &hey took o!! my glasses. gro1elled in the dirt !or my spectacles

but two grabbed me !rom behind and pulled down the slee1es o! my blaer, imprisoning

my arms. Maybe it was a mugging@ &hey did want something. &he third threw my school

bag o1er a bush into a garden, while the !ourth took a kni!e, and touched my breast

pocket with the shining tip. Auick as a !lash he slit through the stitching o! the yellow,

embroidered crest, and ripped, through the school badge so that it hung in tattered scab.

'uriously, one o! them picked up my glasses !rom the gutter and handed them back tome. &hen, they were o!!, they were gone.

/3 was ashamed to !ind mysel! trembling !or the rest o! the walk home. )umiliated, had

mismanaged it, should ha1e apologied right !rom the beginning.

/4 Bisten boys, know it0s not your !ault you are who you are and am me. You want my

school badge@ 'ertainly, please ha1e it.

/6 Bogically, rationally, knew that was their superior. -nd i! knew it, they knew it too.

&hat was why they wanted to attack. &hey recognied my grey, wool blaer. t wasn0t

their !aultCC t0s why they wanted to attack. t0s nobody0s !ault that they must li1e on the

council estate and go to +osehill, any more than it0s my !ault that my parents are well9

educated, well9paid, and want me to be the same. No doubt, those boys were 5ust as

intelligent as me, but with all moti1ations !or li!e. %o it was nobody0s !ault. *1en so,

couldn0t blame anybody but mysel! !or making the wrong decision.
