Introduction (conti.)How potholes are made?
![Page 4: English Final Project Presentation 2015](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062901/58f160651a28aba0728b4581/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Introduction(conti.)Objective:● To find potholes more efficiently using a device that is
able to detect potholes and acquire pertinent information that would expedite the process of inspection and filling of the potholes in New York City.
![Page 5: English Final Project Presentation 2015](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062901/58f160651a28aba0728b4581/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Current Situation● Between Jan. and Feb. of 2015, over 9,505 pothole
complaints compared to 2,824 during the same period last year.
● According to Councilman Ydanis Rodriquez, “Every year, New Yorkers spend close to $700 on maintenance after going over hundreds of potholes and unsafe conditions throughout our city and state.”
![Page 6: English Final Project Presentation 2015](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062901/58f160651a28aba0728b4581/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Current Situation (conti.)● The city and state on the other hand, spends close to
$70,000 annually on paying drivers that claim pothole damages.
![Page 7: English Final Project Presentation 2015](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062901/58f160651a28aba0728b4581/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Current Situation (conti.)Problems with the DOT’s process:● Lengthy applications in order to report potholes● Delays between personal reports and inspection● Limited number of DOT inspectors ● Resurfaced roads are not inspected until 5 years after
![Page 8: English Final Project Presentation 2015](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062901/58f160651a28aba0728b4581/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Current Situation (conti.)Previous Solutions:● A van that measures the shape of a road, detecting dips
and parts where water can pool and weaken the road using a camera, microphone, radar, and other sensors.
![Page 9: English Final Project Presentation 2015](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062901/58f160651a28aba0728b4581/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Current Situation (conti.)● Another solution was to send droids to drive along roads
and report back any potholes that they detect. But the cost of designing and maintenance of difficult automatic machines are much larger than their budget.
![Page 10: English Final Project Presentation 2015](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062901/58f160651a28aba0728b4581/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Current Situation (conti.)● The City designed a few apps such as SeeClickFix to
allow citizens to snap photos of potholes and send them to city hall. However, the apps did not work out as planned.
![Page 11: English Final Project Presentation 2015](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062901/58f160651a28aba0728b4581/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Our Solution● We plan to use a special camera called DS325 that will
be connected to a GPS and GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) . This device will detect and transfer data to a service-server; helping DOT inspectors pinpoint potholes faster.

Our Solution (conti.)● This device will be attached to the rear of 100 taxi cars
and NYPD patrol cars and will have a low power consumption.

Benefits● Speeds up the process ● More area is covered● Less damage to cars● Creates jobs for maintenance and data analysis
![Page 17: English Final Project Presentation 2015](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062901/58f160651a28aba0728b4581/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Future● Having the information about pothole locations visible by
citizens on their GPS systems● This device can even be upgraded to predict faults and
vulnerable sites that potholes may appear
