Classroom activity 2: (Learner’s Book, page 5) Formal assessment taskResources needed• Learner’s Book• Personal dictionary

Teaching hints • The learners are going to write a personal recount. Those who are struggling can use the

frame provided in the Learner’s Book.

• Review the writing process that they learnt about in Grade 4. (See below for the

complete writing process.)

• Discuss each of the steps in the writing process.

• Write some interesting words on the board for the learners to copy. Tell them that they

may wish to use some of these words to make their recounts more exciting.

• Encourage the learners to start their story with the given phrase as laid out in the

Learner’s Book.

• Stress that they must write in the past tense as the events that they are recounting

happened in the past tense.

• This would be good time to recap the simple past tense briefly with the learners, i.e. add ‘-ed’ or ‘-d’ to a verb to form the simple past, e.g. I paint – I painted, I lie – I lied.

The writing processWriting and designing texts is a process that consists of the following stages:

Pre-writing/planning: • At this stage learners should decide on the purpose of the text and the audience for

whom the text is to be written and/or designed.• They should brainstorm ideas in groups using mind maps, flow charts or lists. They

could even consult relevant sources, select relevant information and organise ideas.

Drafting• Learners should now produce a first draft, which takes into account purpose, audience,

topic and text structure.

Revision• Now, learners need to read their drafts critically.

• They should get feedback from you or their classmates.

Editing/proofreading• After the revision stage has been completed, the learners edit and proofread their drafts.

Writing in neat/presenting• The last stage is to produce a neat, legible, edited final version.

• Then go through the writing activity in the Learner’s Book, page 139 with the learners. Emphasise the following points: ͦ The story should have a clear beginning, middle and end. ͦ The story should have at least a few lines of direct speech, properly punctuated. ͦ The learners must check all punctuation in their stories. ͦ They must use conjunctions such as ‘and’ and ‘but’. ͦ They must write a first draft, edit and write a final draft.

• You may wish to assess their stories using the assessment rubric below. Assess their stories out of 30 marks.
