You're in good hands with us
Our work focuses on providing the best possible
medical care and respect for our patients. This
holistic approach, which encompasses the
individual's physical, psychological and social
needs, is one that we practise every day in our
hospital. To help us do this, we remain receptive
to new developments in patient care and medi-
cal science and we are constantly improving
our skills. Our treatment, nursing and support
concept is holistic and coordinated on a patient-
by-patient basis. We regard our profession as a
social mandate that we want to help shape and
define. As a result, we always provide high-
quality treatment and care in a friendly setting
and have a positive, obliging attitude towards
our patients and their relatives.

Meeting us for the first time
We want you to feel at home with us. So
we're here for you right from the start.
Over the next few pages, we have put to-
gether all of the key information for you:
from arriving to admission and optional
services. The "A day with us" section also
tells you more about what happens on our
wards.
How to get to our hospital
Parking spaces
Visitors can park free for 30 minutes in our
underground garage and on the car park on the
Augustinergelände. Otherwise the usual local
parking charges are levied.
Bus (public transport) If you are planning to arrive and leave by bus,
we recommend using Line 1. It stops just by the
hospital. Stops can be found on the Sebastian-
strasse, near the Courts of Justice, and on the
Gabelsbergerstrasse (Klinikum/Stadtfriedhof).
The hospital is just a few minutes' walk from
there.

Admission
As an inpatient
The team in the admissions department on the
first floor is your first point of contact in our
building. To register you as a patient, we will re-
quire some information as well as your doctor's
referral letter and your health insurance card.
As an outpatient
If you want to be treated at our facility as an
outpatient, please arrange an appointment in
the relevant specialist clinic with one of our
secretaries. They will also be able to advise you
which treatments will be covered by insurance
funds.
In an emergency
In our emergency department, we provide
24-hour care to patients with acute injuries or
conditions. The entrance for stretcher cases is
via the Söllnerstrasse. Patients are registered
in the central admissions department on the
first floor. We deal with paediatric emergen-
cies directly in our paediatric department. This
can be accessed via the main entrance on the
Söllnerstrasse.
Labor and delivery
Patients who are about to give birth should
contact our reception team directly.

and will be happy to provide you with any other

Private health care service
In addition to general hospital services, we also
offer you the option of arranging other special

A day with us
The day on our ward begins at around 06.30 am. As well as waking patients up, the
nursing team will make up beds, provide as-
sistance to physically incapacitated patients
with their daily ablutions and will also change
dressings.
The ward staff will bring breakfast to your room
at around 08.00 am. We then prepare patients
for any investigations they are due to have and
order any medicines for the following day.
Lunch is served at around 11.15 am. If you are
not having any further investigations in the
afternoon, you will have sufficient time to
receive visitors or to rest.
At around 01.30 pm. we come round with tea
and coffee. We carry out further nursing duties
in an afternoon.
We bring round your evening meal at
around 05.00 pm.
The ward winds down for the night at 09.00 pm. We are of course also available
during the night should you need anything.
Simply press the patient call bell.
10
Your stay
After admission, all of the formalities are
complete. You now have time to settle
yourself in your room, choose your menu
for the following day and to get your
bearings. If you have any questions, or
you would like more information, please
contact the ward staff. They will be happy
to assist you.
Room Furnishing and Accessoires
Our rooms all have modern facilities and are
mostly equipped with their own wet room (WC
and shower). Every room has a telephone, radio
and TV. Our coffee and tea bar on the ward can
also be used free of charge in an afternoon.
House rules
We want our patients to be able to recover in a
calm and peaceful environment. We therefore
ask you to take a moment to consider our
house rules. You will find the full list of our
house rules in the information folder in your
room. It includes notes on separating waste,
smoking and alcohol, etc.

A balanced and varied diet can make a big dif-
ference to your health. Our kitchen chef and his
team use only high-quality products, primarily
sourced from our local area, in the preparation
of your meals.

Our kitchen hostesses are the link between the
kitchen and our patients. They come and visit
you every day and note down your meal choices.

Your stay
Telephone, radio, TV
We know that your time in hospital can pass
very slowly. This is why we offer you a range
of entertainment media. Directly next to your
bed is our control system used to operate the
telephone, radio and TV. The brochure in your
night stand will explain how they all work.
Here are the essentials at a glance.
How to use
The TV and telephone are used with a special
chip card. These can be obtained for a deposit
at the reception desk or from patient admis-
sions. You can then load your required sum
onto your card at one of the card machines or at
reception. When you return your chip card to
us, we will give you back your deposit and any
credit you have left on the card.
Costs
All radio channels are free for you to listen to,
even without a chip card. The telephone and
TV can be used for a daily flat-rate fee. This
fee includes unlimited calls to the German land
line and to D1, D2, E-Plus and O2 providers.
Our TV package offers over 20 TV channels,
including six Sky channels.
TV and telephone flat-rate fee per day
TV and telephone package Euro 3.80
Headphones (disposable) Euro 2.50
13
Internet
You can surf free of charge on your WLAN-
enabled devices in virtually all patient rooms,
in the entrance hall and in the café. If you have
any questions or need assistance, please contact
our reception staff.

We’re here for you
Stoma advice
Artificial stool or urine drains are a sensitive
procedure and often cause psychological stress.
We support and advise you on how to cope with
your stoma and show you how to look after it.
Our stoma therapist works closely with doctors,
nursing staff and the social services team to do
this. If you wish, we can of course also provide
your relatives with tips and information about
personal hygiene and how to care for your
stoma. Our counselling department will also
discuss sensitive matters with you.
Paediatric follow-up
If a child is born prematurely, is chronically ill
or has been seriously injured in an accident, the
lives of the affected family are changed dramati-
cally. The Paediatric Follow-Up Department
offers the families of such children holistic and
personal support during and after their stay
in hospital. As part of the transfer of care, we
strive to achieve as smooth a transition as possi-
ble between inpatient treatment and outpatient
care.
Together with the 'Bunter Kreis Nordoberpfalz'
organisation, we have an interdisciplinary team
on hand to provide the best possible support to
the family.

Expert nurses
Specialist oncology nurses:
For those affected and their families, a diag-
nosis of cancer is a huge source of worry. As
oncology specialists, we provide support and we
are the first port of call for any questions you
may have. We can provide information about
how diagnostic procedures and treatments are
carried out and we arrange nursing care. We are
here for you even after you have left hospital.
Specialist breast nurse
As experts in conditions affecting the breasts,
we act as companions and contacts for women
with breast cancer. We support patients by
always being there for them and through close
contact - from the moment the diagnosis is
made to their return to everyday life. We want to
make sure you are involved in your treatment,
helping to determine what happens, and we
do this by providing you with comprehensive
explanations and advice.
Breastfeeding advice
To ensure that breastfeeding mothers and their
babies get the best advice right from the start,
our paediatric nurses have undergone further
training to become breastfeeding advisers. They
support women after the birth on the ward and,
after discharge, provide an opportunity for them
to obtain advice twice a month at our "Breast-
feeding Café at the Hospital".

Wound care management
Modern wound care allows wounds to heal in a
shorter space of time. This requires a lot of spe-
cialist expertise: as well as wound monitoring,
wound genesis and wound diagnosis, the choice
of dressing, careful hygiene and the patient
history also have a role to play. Our ICW wound
expert will be happy to advise you on the care
options available.
Nutrition consultation centre
With some conditions, a change of diet can have
a positive influence on your recovery. Follow-
ing a prescription from your doctor, we will be
happy to arrange an appointment for you with
our dietician. Relatives and contacts are also
welcome to come with you. We offer you advice
on how you can change your eating habits.
Diabetes advice
A healthy lifestyle, the right diet and the right
dose of medications are crucial for patients with
diabetes: In our advice centre, we explain the
condition, the possible secondary conditions
that can occur and the treatment methods used.
Of course we also offer special educational
courses. You will need a referral note from your
GP for these.

Health problems and associated inpatient stays
can result in changes to everyday life that are
sometimes temporary but often permanent.
Kliniken Nordoberpfalz AG offers its patients
not only the very best care, but also the ability
to seek help with managing such changes. Pa-
tients can expect practical support from the staff
in the "Patient coordination" department. In
some departments, invitations and ward alloca-
tions are already handled by our department.
During your stay in hospital, consultations
are held with the patient and their relatives in
which the patient's individual care needs after
hospital are discussed. On the basis of this
assessment and while respecting the patient's
wishes, our staff coordinate the patient's dis-
charge so that the patient only has to focus on
one thing: getting better.

"The little that you can do is a lot" Albert Schweitzer
The Förderverein für Schwerkranke organisation is responsible for people in the region and supports the outpatient and inpatient treatment of patients with serious and chronic illnesses. In line with the ideas of Albert Schweitzer, its members regard it as their ethical and moral duty to make a contribution towards widespread, exceptional and unconditional care given especially to seriously ill people.
Effective explanations, information and follow-up are intended to ensure that all patients from the region receive holistic care. The funds are used to provide modern medical equipment and to improve infrastructures, as well as to provide doctors and nurses with further training. With your donation, you are also safeguarding assistance and support for those affected and their relatives as they come to terms with the burden of the condition. So you see, with a donation to the Förderverein, you too can do something for seriously ill people.

Head Physician Dr. Jürgen Altmeppen is in charge of this specialist department at Weiden Hospi-
tal. Since anaesthesia is a major and unfamiliar procedure, we take the time to discuss it in advance
with the patient. We have at our disposal all of the modern methods used in general anaesthesia and
the full range of regional anaesthesia techniques that are used close to the spinal cord. During the
operation, the anaesthetist monitors the patient's vital functions, ensures they are free from pain
and makes sure they are positioned correctly. After the operation, the anaesthetist monitors the
patient's recovery and provides assistance to the wards when required on matters relating to pain
therapy. A 24-hour staff rota ensures that anaesthetic doctors and nurses are always able to play
their role in ensuring the best possible care for seriously ill patients on the surgical intensive care
unit.

General, Thoracic and Abdominal Surgery, which has 80 beds, since 2006. We treat patients with
conditions of the digestive organs, the endocrine glands, the lungs and the pleura using open and
minimally invasive techniques. Every intervention is preceded by an in-depth consultation and a
thorough physical examination. The doctors then decide which additional investigations may be
required in order to optimise the outcome of the operation. We also carry out standard operations on
new-born and premature babies with subsequent intensive care. As well as planning surgery, our
doctors of course also look after patients after their operation up until their discharge.

Dr. Eberhard Müller has been in charge of our state-of-the-art department with around 40 beds
since August 2005. We specialise in treating diseases of the arteries and veins, including venous
ulcers, we carry out shunt surgery on dialysis patients and treat patients with chronic wounds, espe-
cially in cases of diabetic foot syndrome. The consultation is very important for us, regardless of the
procedure: with the patient's input, we define the treatment concept and work in line with state-
of-the-art principles. We routinely use interventional methods (such as balloon catheter dilatation,
the use of vascular stents) and surgical methods or a combination of the two. Aortic aneurysms
(abnormal widening of the largest artery in the body) in particular are in many cases resolved using
endovascular techniques. We have a hybrid operating theatre featuring the very best equipment
to help us do this. Venous conditions, especially varicose veins, are treated with the least invasive
surgical approach possible, and usually as an outpatient.

Specialist in Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear Medicine has been a separate institute at Weiden Hospital since 2008 and is led by Dr. Jo-
hann Schönberger. We offer all modern diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures, including PET/CT.
We also carry out nuclear medicine-based treatments that are not linked to radio-iodine treatment.
To be able to image disease or abnormal metabolic processes in our patients' bodies, we administer
medications that are tagged with weakly radioactive substances and visualise their distribution
using a gamma camera. Nuclear medicine is used in the context of cancer, heart disease and brain
abnormalities, for example. As a central department, we take care of patients who have been admit-
ted to Weiden Hospital and the other hospitals operated by the Kliniken Nordoberpfalz AG group.
We also treat outpatients, these being patients with statutory or private insurance, via the affiliated
Medical Care Centre in Weiden.

Our department, with eight treatment stations, treats semi-resident patients with acute and chronic
pain, regardless of its cause. The department's team therefore includes doctors specialising in
anaesthetics, general medicine and neurology as well as therapists from a range of disciplines: psy-
chotherapists, physiotherapists, relaxation trainers, social education workers and specially trained
nurses. The first step in the treatment regime is a detailed admission process, while the actual
emphasis of treatment lies on a multi-modal pain management programme in groups for adults, the
elderly and children.
The Clinic also provides consultations to patients experiencing pain in all of Weiden Hospital's
inpatient wards and units and offers the team's skills as part of an interdisciplinary pain conference
of registered and practising doctors and psychotherapists. The Clinic also recommends further diag-
nostic and therapeutic measures, helping to improve pain management for patients in the region.

Socio-Paediatric Centre of the Kliniken Nordoberpfalz AG
Dr. med. Susanne Rinnert
Paediatrician / Paediatric Neurologist
The Weiden Socio-Paediatric Centre (SPC) is one of 18 centres across Bavaria to offer outpatient
socio-paediatric care for children with chronic neurological conditions and for children with dis-
abilities or at threat of disability in the northern part of the Upper Palatinate. The centre, which
is led by doctors but operates on an interdisciplinary basis with various other professions, is
based in terms of its structure on the specifications of Social Security Statute Book V.
In the Socio-Paediatric Centre, children with developmental issues and children with chronic ill-
nesses or disabilities are investigated and, once the diagnostic procedures are complete, offered
advice and a holistic treatment concept. Any support needed is also coordinated here. Children
are cared for here from the ages of 0 to 18. As well as providing medical and therapeutic care
for the patient, families are also supported in coming to terms with their child's condition and
managing their everyday lives.
Alongside the work of the highly skilled staff, the very friendly and child-centred amenities in
the centre ensure a pleasant experience for children undergoing investigations, while the posi-
tive environment also alleviates the worries of parents concerned about their children's health
and development. To ensure the prompt diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of children and
satisfactory advice for their families, staff at the centre work closely with colleagues within exist-
ing networks incorporating paediatric and GP practices, registered therapists, support centres,

North East Bavarian Perinatal Centre
The Level 1 Perinatal Centre in Amberg and
Weiden offers patients the ideal location in
which to enjoy care and support not just for
normal pregnancies and births, but also for pre-
mature babies and high-risk pregnancies. The
independent obstetric and neonatal departments
with neonatal intensive care unit and appro-
priately qualified doctors and nurses therefore
define the highest possible standard of service
and quality for perinatal centres.
With well over 2,800 births in total each year,
the departments involved rank among Ger-
many's major obstetric and neonatal facilities.
The Amberg-Weiden Perinatal Centre provides
highly skilled care close to home for premature
and new-born babies in the northern Upper
Palatinate region. Shared training and quality
assurance projects ensure constant development
and the integration of the latest research find-
ings. The concept of a shared perinatal centre,
in which specialists from adjoining departments
cooperate very intensively, was first established
in the North East Bavaria Perinatal Centre.
Several other facilities in Bavarian now also
work very successfully together in perinatal
centre networks.

Regional Trauma Centre
Since 02.10.2009, Weiden Hospital has been
certified as a regional trauma centre. Since
01.04.2011 it has been the base for the Christoph
80 rescue helicopter. It has played a key role in
providing comprehensive care for accident victims
in the northern Upper Palatinate region. Under the
guidance of the Department of Trauma Surgery,
the trauma centre is brilliantly equipped to care
for patients with multiple injuries and treats
around 100 seriously injured people a year. The
surgical intensive care unit, with 19 intensive care
beds, is available for providing onward care for
patients, so that the trauma centre is in a constant
state of readiness to receive patients who have
been injured in accidents of all degrees of serious-
ness. The successful re-certification and approval
as a trauma centre (VAV) by the German Society of
Accident Insurers confirms that we offer the best
possible care for seriously injured patients.

We meet the key scientifically supported crite-
ria for providing safe and high-quality medi-
cal care to patients undergoing artificial joint
replacements in our Endoprosthesis Centre.
Our treatment concept includes surgeons with
many years' experience who are highly skilled
in endoprosthetics, as well as internal and
external cooperation partners, to ensure the best
possible interdisciplinary collaboration between
the various specialisms.

The future of surgery: modern technology in the OR
Kliniken Nordoberpfalz AG is investing in the
future - and therefore in the wellbeing of its
patients. New and complex treatment methods
require high-quality equipment for the surgeons
to use. We are equipped for these challenges
with three highly modern operating theatres, al-
lowing us to offer our patients even better care.
Hybrid operating theatre
The modern operating theatre is fully equipped
and has additional high-performance imaging
technology: a special CT machine and angiog-
raphy system for imaging blood vessels allow
the surgeons to work with absolute precision.
The new hybrid operating theatre has a robot-
controlled X-ray system that can be positioned
very accurately over the patient. It allows
angiographies to be performed and 3D images
to be taken.
Integrated operating theatre
Through optimised networking, we are able to
guarantee a new standard of quality for our oper-
ations in the integrated operating theatre thanks
to increased interdisciplinary collaboration. The
operating theatre equipment is controlled using a
touchscreen. The digitised image and video data
is available throughout the hospital.
Orthopaedic operating theatre
With an additional orthopaedic operating theatre,
we have more space for operations. Waiting times
for patients are therefore reduced.

Stroke UnitThe future of surgery: modern technology in the OR
A stroke unit with ten treatment stations has
been annexed to the Neurology Department
since 2003. On this special unit, we treat stroke
patients with an interdisciplinary approach: our
team comprises doctors from the fields of neu-
rology, cardiology, neuro-radiology and vascular
surgery, along with specially trained nursing
staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists
and speech therapists as well as rehabilitation
advisers. Since every minute counts for stroke
patients, we need to be able to weigh up deci-
sions very quickly. Our admission procedure
from the patient's arrival in the emergency ad-
missions unit to their onward care on the ward
is therefore designed so that there are no delays.
