OverviewProduced Water Treatment systems have traditionally consisted of deoiling hydrocyclones followed by simple downstream degassing vessels or induced gas fl otation units. However, operators around the world are now looking to further reduce their oil discharges to sea, driven by environmental pressures, regulation and sometimes simply by a desire to reduce their environmental footprint through compliance with ISO 14000.
Therefore, a new approach has been required to meet these goals, leading to the development of the Cyclotech DeepSweep® Compact Flotation Unit, which, when combined with Cyclotech’s state-of-the-art B20 Series Deoiling Hydrocyclone, represents Best Available Technology for a two stage produced water treatment system.
Design PhilosophyThe underlying design philosophy behind the Cyclotech DeepSweep® Compact Flotation Unit is to:
• Signifi cantly enhance standard, well established Gas Flotation design principles by integrating them with Cyclonic Confi ned Swirling Flow theory to produce a high performance Produced Water Polishing system;
• Ensure virtually complete insensitivity to vessel motion; a critical factor for FPSO applications.
Design featuresThe key design elements are as follows:
• Vertical vessel orientation to enhance performance while reducing footprint;
• Proprietary enhanced polishing process to utilise both the Dissolved Gas and Induced Gas Flotation mechanisms;
• Proprietary externally adjustable gas/liquid contacting and induction systems, which allows induced gas to be introduced as micro-bubbles at the periphery of the vessel. These micro-bubbles are driven towards the centre of the vessel by the swirling fl ow completely “sweeping” the entire vessel volume, the process by which the technology derives its name;
• Pumped re-circulation system to maximise turndown and provide motive fl uid for the induction gas;
• The vessel Length / Diameter ratio is selected to minimise axial velocity whilst also minimising radial distance travelled by oil droplets to the oil skim outlet;
• Inlet nozzle height optimised to match predicted axial oil concentration, which avoids short circuiting of oily water to clean water outlet and incoming fl ow from disturbing the separated oil pad;
• Flow short-circuiting is avoided by the low g acceleration fi eld in combination with the confi guration of the proprietary internals, which account for both axial and radial oil concentration gradients to maximise effectiveness of oil skimming and clean water removal;
• Optimised skimming design concentrates oil to minimise collection of water in the oil outlet stream;
• No fi ne tolerance internals which results in low sensitivity to solids and scale formation;
• Particularly suited to Floating Production applications where the unique design ensures high performance insensitivity to vessel motion;
• For more onerous applications two stage series systems can be provided.
Benefi tsThe benefi ts of the DeepSweep® CFU technology are as follows:
• High effi ciency. Typical outlet concentrations from 5 to 25 mg/l
• Small footprint;
• High turndown;
• Scalable design;
• Very low maintenance;
• Insensitive to solids / scale formation;
• Reduces or eliminates requirement for chemicals;
• Insensitive to vessel motion;
• No requirement for adjustable internals;
• No moving parts inside the vessel.
Technical Viability Testing. Cyclotech has a pilot scale DeepSweep® CFU test skid that can be used to determine the DeepSweep® polishing performance on live fl uids. This test unit is rated for 8000 bpd and is available for rental over short or long term lease periods. Cyclotech can also perform a full oil drop size characterisation of the existing Produced Water Treatment as part of these performance trials.
