C Reading

5 Read the text and answer the questions.

My name’s Helen and my best friend is Nicola. We’re both 16. We met eleven years

ago when we first went to school. We go to the same girls’ school, but Nicola and I

are very different. She is very sporty – she loves running and doing athletics, and I’m

very musical – I sing in a group, and I play the piano and the violin.

We have very different personalities, too. For example, if we watch a romantic

film, I always cry, and if we watch a

horror film, I’m always terrified. Nicola is the opposite – she doesn’t show her

feelings. My favourite thing about Nicola is that she is always honest. If I ask her

opinion about a new dress or a boy at a party, she always tells the truth. She’s also

very patient. She doesn’t mind waiting for me when I’m late for things.

Nicola is great, but there are some things about her that drive me mad. She is too

modest. She blushes every time someone says something nice about her. She’s

also very, very tidy. Everything is in the correct place in her bedroom. (Mine is the

complete opposite because I hate tidying!) The worst habit she has is getting up

early. She goes running before school and she never stays in bed late at weekends.

I hate people who are active in the mornings – I’m sleepy for an hour after I wake up.

C Reading

6 Read the text and answer the questions.

My friend, Tina, told me about the flat where she used to live. It was on the first floor of an old

house in a quiet part of town. The flat had big rooms and a view over a pretty garden. The

sitting room was at the front of the house and it had very big windows. It was a lovely, light

room but it always felt cold, even when the sun was shining brightly.

That wasn’t the only unusual thing about it. Tina said that there were lots of strange noises

in different parts of the flat. She could hear whispers in the kitchen and a man humming in

the sitting room. Tina is a very balanced person and she never felt scared when she heard

the noises. Then an incident took place in July last year.

Tina went out on a sunny morning with her brother, Dave. When they returned, the flat felt

very cold. Dave went to the kitchen to make some coffee and Tina walked into the sitting

room. She saw the back of a man’s head on the sofa opposite the window. ‘I thought you

were making coffee,’ Tina said. Then she heard Dave’s voice from the kitchen and she

screamed. She looked back at the sofa and the man had disappeared.

A month later, Tina was preparing to move to a new flat when she found an

old newspaper. She read an article about

the flat.

C Reading

4 Read the text and answer the questions.

Dear Elena

Thanks for your birthday card. I had a lovely day and lots of nice presents. I hope you are feeling better now

and that your cold has gone.

I've got some interesting news. My exam results were good and so I decided to look for a summer job. I saw

and advert for an au pair to look after two children from July to September. The family wanted someone who

is practical, organized and reliable. (I've spent so long looking after my little brother and sister that I think I

have those qualities!)

I filled in an application form and sent a photograph but I haven't had an interview yet. The father rang me

and the family wants to meet me next week. I'm a bit nervous about it because the father was a little

aggressive over the phone. I really want to impress the family, so have you got any tips for the interview.

I saw my ex-boyfriend, James, the other day. He was with his new gïrlfriend, Anna. She was staring at me

angrily when I hugged James. She told me about her success at school and in sports. I think she's quite a

competitive person - just the opposite to James. I haven't because I hope I'll have a new job soon.

That's all for now. Say hello to your mum and dad.

Phone or write soon with your news.

5 Read the text and answer the questions.

Emma’s diary page – Friday 16th November I went out with Dave again tonight. We’ve been out lots of time since the middle of September when we met. He’s really nice – we never have arguments – but he’s a bit too unemotional for me. He bought me some flowers once, but he hasn’t been very romantic since then. My old boyfriends used to write love letters and poems and I really liked that. I’m not really sure what to do. I don’t want to split up but I think we need to make some changes. We’ve seen each other three times every week since September and I think that’s too much. I’d prefer to go out at weekends and not meet in the week. I hope that will make the relationship more interesting. I’ll also have more time to see my friends and concentrate on my studies. I think the problem may be our star signs. I’m Scorpio – very hot-blooded and sensitive and Dave is Libra – very balanced and logical. But my mum and dad are very different and they have been happily married for years. Perhaps I need a love potion to make Dave more romantic or I could give him a book of love stories. It’s my birthday soon, so I hope Dave organizes something special for me – a romantic dinner for two would be lovely (better than our last meal together in a fast-food café!)

I was never very interested in art at school but I went to an exhibition of local artists last year.

My friend had bought two tickets for herself and her brother, but he couldn’t go, so I used his

ticket. When my friend and I looked at a list of the exhibits, we saw that there were over one

hundred. I thought, ‘Oh no! We are going to be here for hours.’

The exhibits were divided into different rooms and they included sculptures,

portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. We walked from room to room for about an

hour and then my friend asked for my opinion. I was very bored but I didn’t want

to offend her so I said, ‘Oh, it’s fascinating.’ My friend then looked at another painting,

so I walked into the next room.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. There was a mural which filled the whole wall. The style was

abstract, but I could see the main elements of the picture – mountains, a river, tall trees and

sunlight. The shapes were simple and the colours were light and delicate. The best thing about

the image was its effect – it made me feel completely calm and balanced.

I was still looking at the mural when my friend appeared. She thought that it was rather cold

and depressing, which I couldn’t understand. People’s reactions to art are a very personal

thing, but I’ve visited a lot more exhibitions since I saw my beautiful mural.
