Top affordable spas, bath houses and hammams in Europe

0. Liquidrom, Berlin

The centrepiece of this bath house is a large salt-water pool in a dimly lit room with a domed roof. There’s a range of saunas and steam rooms – including a Himalayan salt sauna and an outdoor pool where you can enjoy the crisp Berlin air.

1. Gellert Baths, Budapest

Budapest is the dream destination when it comes to bath culture and there are plenty to choose from. The first choice has to be Gellert Baths, a stunning art nouveau mansion. Many baths in Budapest still have separate sessions or areas for men and women, since 2013 Gellert baths has been fully mixed.

2. Laugardalslaug, Reykjavik

The Blue Lagoon will be high on the list for most visitors to Iceland, but for those looking for a soak without leaving the capital, Laugardalslaug is a great thermal pool. As well as a thermal steam bath, it has hot tubs and, for those who want some extra treatments, is connected to the Laugar Spa.

3. Sauna Hermanni, Helsinki

“Raising steam since the 1950s,” Sauna Hermanni is one of three public saunas in the Finnish capital. It’s a place where you can join in the routines of Helsinki life, where locals make a point of sweating it out on a weekly basis. Expect classic wood-panelled saunas, with vintage touches.

4. Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı, Istanbul

Another city with a spa heritage is Istanbul, and one of the most impressive being Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı. Built in the 16th century and named after an admiral of the Ottoman navy, it reopened in 2012 after a seven-year restoration.

5. Sanduny banya, Moscow

Sanduny is a palatial bath house – and with Moscow temperatures dropping to below freezing in winter, it is a great place to come in from the cold. Tourists can also take a walking tour of the site (every Tuesday at 4pm), to learn more about the history of Russian baths before taking the plunge.

6. Banya No 1, London

This banya – touted by many London party people as the perfect hangover cure – is not a particularly mellow experience, but after a session of being whipped with twigs (a venik massage) and drenched with buckets of frozen water while being served beetroot juice and vodka, you’ll be ready to hit the commute on Monday.

7. Centralbadet, Stockholm Built in 1904, Centralbadet is an art nouveau palace where visitors can unwind in magnificent surroundings. Along with bath and sauna rooms there is space for yoga and meditation. A unique touch is the traditional barbershop, offering an old-fashioned razor shave.

Task 2

You are going to read an article about schools in some countries in Asia.

For questions 8-14 choose the correct answer (A-C) according to the text.

Only answers written in the section marked “answer” will be corrected.

There is an example (0) at the beginning.

Lessons delivered by taxi, truck and boat

Tuk Tuk

Tuk- tuks, the motorised rickshaws used across south-east Asia, are delivering textbooks and lessons to remote villages in a scheme known as "Book Book Tuk-Tuk".

It can be difficult and expensive for students to get an education in rural Cambodia and a school in Takhmau, south of Phnom Penh is experimenting with taking lessons directly to them.

Kuma Cambodia, a school founded in 2012 by the Norwegian Association for Private Initiative in Cambodia (NAPIC), decided to dispatch libraries on wheels to remote areas, to bring books to rural children.

The Book Book Tuk Tuk project, working with village chiefs to encourage participation, sends out tuk-tuks staffed by Cambodian volunteers.

'Cycle of poverty'

Volunteer Pring Mean, a 21-year-old Cambodian, explained: "Not letting children go to school is common among the poorest.

"Parents do not understand the value of education, family income is low and so children need to work or look after young siblings, or parents suffer from addiction," says Mean.

The tuk-tuk volunteers teach children maths, how to draw, read, sing, and tell them traditional Cambodian stories.

Seavsean, a 10-year-old Cambodian girl, lived under a plastic sheet with her parents and brother in a rural village.

Her father gambled away the family's earnings, leaving her mother to sneak out at night to steal rice to feed her children.

But after participating in the parent programme at Book Book Tuk Tuk, Seavsean's father stopped drinking and got a job. Now, they live in a brick house, and Seavsean attends school at Kuma Cambodia.

"We believe giving parents more knowledge, hope and motivation to help them change their destructive behaviour and break the cycle for their children," said Pring Mean.

Teaching English by video

In Indonesia, three organisations, Oxford University Press (OUP), car group IndoMobil and US teaching network Eleutian, combined forces to kit out trucks with satellite technology, linking Indonesian students with US-based teachers.

The trucks are driven to low-income communities across the country, park somewhere and set up.

The side of the truck folds away to reveal a large TV screen and students learn from OUP's syllabus from a teacher leading the class in real time from the US.

"English proficiency is becoming increasingly important in developing countries, says OUP's Joseph Noble.”This is particularly true in Indonesia. However, many students are being left behind.

The TeachCast project has reached more than a thousand students, and has plans to expand its fleet of 15 trucks to 500, with each truck teaching 150 students per day.

Floating schools

In Bangladesh, much of the country is prone to flooding, classrooms on wheels aren't always a viable option. Flooding impacts children's education, adding to the country's four million children who are already out of school.

"Schools struggle against floods and riverbank erosion," says Mohammed Rezwan, executive director of non-profit organisation Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha.

Rezwan's family owned a small boat, meaning he could attend school during monsoon season, and Rezwan was inspired to create "floating schools".

"I thought if children couldn't come to school, then the school should come to them."

The organisation now owns 22 school boats, and educates nearly 2,000 children, who are collected from various riverside villages throughout the day.

After the boat docks at its final destination, class begins. Each boat is equipped with solar powered electricity, a laptop, and a classroom for 30 students.

Task 3

You are going to read an article about Amazon.

Complete sentences (15-20) according to the information in the text.

Use a maximum of FOUR words.

There is an example (0) at the beginning.

Amazon service will let couriers open front doors

Amazon is launching a service that will let couriers open people’s front doors and put deliveries inside. Users of Amazon Key will need a smart lock and Cloud Cam camera. Couriers will scan a package barcode and once the delivery has been verified online, the camera will start recording and the delivery person will be able to unlock the door using an app. One analyst said consumers would have to be convinced the system was secure if they were to use it.

Users will be able to choose to watch the delivery live or receive a short video after the drop-off. The system can also be used to give access to dog walkers, cleaners or visiting guests.

The online shopping giant has long sought ways of improving delivery convenience for customers. “Amazon seems to be on an unstoppable mission to own every aspect of the home,” said CCS Insight analyst Ben Wood.

Mr. Wood said he used a video doorbell and smart lock to give couriers access to his garage. He said asking customers to make their front doors accessible might be more difficult. “My understanding is there’s an awful lot of work being done to make connected locks secure,” he said, in order to address security concerns. “But it would only take a few incidents to stop this dead in the water - people wouldn’t want to have something on their front door if they felt it wasn’t secure.”

Amazon Key will initially be available in 37 US cities where the firm’s own courier, Amazon Logistics, will handle deliveries. “These individuals are thoroughly vetted*, with comprehensive background checks and motor vehicle records reviews,” Amazon says. Amazon also recommends not using in-home delivery if a pet can reach the front door. * checked Source: an article in Technology News
