TEXT: NUTRITIONAL NEEDS OF Athletic PEOPLE

Page 15: english

The Pritikin diet is ideal for runners, hikers, bikers, mountain climbers, spelunkers, and other outdoor-sports fans. If you’re active in sports, you need the same nutrients as sedentary people. Your body will require some of the vitamins and minerals in slightly larger amounts, but the Pritikin diet would supply them even if you weren’t eating more food for the extra calories you need to increase the amount of carbohydrates you eat, but you don’t need additional fat or protein. Scientific studies have shown that on a diet high in complex carbohydrates, athletes have up to three times the endurance of those on the conventional high- protein, high-fat diets.

PROTEIN

Many athletes and body builder believe they should eat more protein. This is not the case, however, and the following account illustrates the effectiveness of a low-protein, high-carbohydrate diet. The Hawaii “Ironman” Triathlon is a grueling athletic event consisting of a 2.4-mile swim in the open ocean, a 112-mile bicycle course, and a 26.2-mile marathon. In the October 9, 1982 event, there were 850 contestans. First, second, and fourth places were won by men on the Pritikin diet. Dave Scott set a new record by completing the 3 events in 9 hours, 8 minutes. Many people were astonished to learn that on a diet high in starchy foods, the “ironmen” could survive, not to mention breaking world records. Their skepticism was in large part due to the prevalence of myths regarding nutrition and athletic performance – mainly the big protein myth.

Now we are going to comment the meaning of the text.
