Providing a 24 Hour Study Facility at UAA: A Feasibility Report
English 212: Technical Writing Paul Song
o Introductiono Criteriao Methodso Research and Resultso Conclusionso Recommendations
Overview
o Examined the feasibility of UAA opening a 24 hour study facility to enhance students’ academic success
o The research for this report was obtained by use of:
Surveys use of academic databases provided by
Consortium Library research via the interweb
Introduction
o major contributing criteria for the report was if there was an overwhelming support from students attending UAA who wanted a 24 hour study facility available
Introduction
o Do students want a 24 hour study facility?o Does the students have a job? If so how
many hours per week do they work?o How often will they use the 24 hour study
facility if it were to open?o Will a 24 hour study facility be beneficial to
your academic success?
Criteria
o Researched how having a job while enrolled in classes affect how well you do in school
o Researched what percentage of students had jobs while enrolled in classes
o Researched what percentage of students wanted a 24 hour study facility
o Used databases provided by the Consortium Library
o Distributed a questionnaire to a technical writing class
Methods
o Figure 1. Vast majority of support for a 24 hour study facility for the students at the University of Alaska - Anchorage. 62% of my sample group believes that the students of the University of Alaska - Anchorage should be provided with a 24 hour study facility.
Results
o Figure 2. Students will use the 24 hour study facility. If provided with a 24 hour study facility at the University of Alaska - Anchorage, students will use the facility.
Results
o Figure 3. My sample group wants to make money while taking classes. 69% of my sample group is partaking in a full/part time job while enrolled for courses at the University of Alaska- Anchorage. 89% of those who are currently partaking in a full/part time job are working thirty or more hours per week.
Results
o spending less time on studying (Oi I and Morrison 2005)
o making less use of school facilities such as libraries and computer labs (Metcalf 2003; Van Dyke, Little, and Callender 2005)
o working more hours increased the probability that a student perceived a negative effect on academic performance (Carney,2006)
Secondary Research
o From the results you can see that establishing a 24 hour study facility for bettering academic success for the students of UAA is completely feasible
o 62% of the participants said that they wanted a 24 hour study facility
o over half the participants said that having a 24 hour study facility will benefit their academic success while attending the university
Conclusion
o I believe further research is needed on the subject
o A study on how much it would cost to maintain a 24 hour study facility and what services they could offer so they could cover costs would be some good research to further this topic
