Listening Text

The Parts of A Leaf

A typical leaf consists of a leafstalk, or petiole; and an expanded blade, or lamina. The petiole connects the blade to the stem. (Leaves that do not have petioles are called sessile.) In some plants a pair of stipules grows from the petiole, below the blade. These are mere shreds in some plants, and large and leaflike in others. In some plants they have developed into spines or tendrils.

Axil: The leaf axil is where the petiole of the leaf attaches to the stem.

Blade: The broad expanded region of the leaf. The broader the leaf, the greater the surface area exposed to sunlight… which leads to a higher rate of photosynthesis.

Petiole: The leaf’s petiole is a thin short stalk that attaches the leaf blade to the stem.

Stipule: A leaf’s stipule is a leafy outgrowth on either side of the leaf stalk or petiole.  It exhibits no specific function.

Tip: The leaf’s tip (or “apex”) is the terminal point of the leaf.

Vein: The leaf’s veins are the vascular tissue of the leaf and are located in the spongy layer of the mesophyll. They are typical examples of pattern formation through ramification. The pattern of the

veins is called venation.  Veins are made up of xylem and phloem tubes.
