Kindergarten

Hello from Kindergarten!

We began November learning about heroes: Superman, Batman, firemen,

police officers, first responders, and soldiers to name a few. We also learned

we can do things to help and care for others which makes us heroes too.

The last couple weeks we’ve been investigating Canadian animals. We found

out they prepare for winter in some smart ways and we’ve been trying out

some of those things, like building a beaver lodge. We’ve also met a new

friend named Aski the turtle. He has been telling us stories about his friends

and how it’s important to care for the earth.

“Your Mind is a powerful

thing. When you fill it with

positive thoughts, your life

will start to change.”

Grade One and Two

Our class has been learning all about communities! Each student has chosen a

job and a lot of our learning is centered around community meetings with our

newly elected mayor, Mason. We are writing about our jobs, using little stick

characters for dramatizing scenarios, and discovering the types of jobs created

by different businesses. We went to the Post Office to see what kinds of

activities postal workers do to help out in our community. Thanks to our

Englefeld Post Mistress Maryanne we know that workers need breaks and

special places to store their personal things - and eat their lunch!

In Math we have been working on ordering random numbers from least to

greatest or greatest to least, and comparing numbers using the symbols < and

> (Grade 2) and representing numbers to 20 (Grade 1). In Health we have

been practicing using our ‘Growth Mindset’ which helps us to remember that

we don’t have to be good at everything, but that we CAN practice and get

better at things that we aren’t good at yet!

Grade Three and Four The Grade 3/4 classroom has been very busy in the last month! The students

have been enjoying our unit in dance as we explore an assortment of different

dances and the cultures that come with them. In social we began our new unit:

First Nations People of Saskatchewan. We have also started a new book for

our read aloud titled ‘Top Ten Ways to Die’ by the Hardy Boys. Students are

continuing the home reading program! We are working hard towards a class

total of 32,000 minutes. So far, we have approximately 11,895 (Woohoo!!)

We are very excited for our field trip to Saskatoon on December 4th as we will

be visiting the Western Development Museum, the University of

Saskatchewan’s Rayner Dairy Facility, as well as the Museum of Natural

Sciences in the Geology building. We will be starting “Secret Santa” in our

classroom, a note will be sent home soon with your child providing more

details! May love, hope and happiness be yours this holiday season!

Grade Five and Six

Well done to the Grade 5/6 students preparing and delivering a well put-

together P-T-S conference!

As Term Two begins, the Grade 5/6 group will continue studying Global

Interdependence in Social. Students will take a closer look at their personal

beliefs and values and notice how culture and place influence them. Different

cultures will be explored, with particular focus on the Arabian Peninsula and

Iraq.

In Math class, Grade 5 students have been exploring Whole Numbers while

the Grade 6 group finishes up Patterns and Equations.

During ELA, the class has been working through communication and group

skills to help maintain respectful relationships. In the latest unit, Peace and

Conflict, students have initiated a Random Acts of Kindness challenge for the

month of December. Watch for kindness coming your way! Throughout the

unit, students will be discussing proverbs, reading short stories, traditional

narratives, poetry, and acting out role plays.

As the Diversity of Living Things unit comes to a close, students have learned

about the microscope and the impact micro-organisms have on our lives. The

upcoming Science test will happen before the winter holidays.

A note will be sent home shortly regarding Secret Santa in our classroom.

Participation in this activity is voluntary and will begin Monday, December 17

and wrap up on December 21, our last day of school before the break.

May this Christmas season find you in good health and good company. Be

safe and enjoy the holiday season!

Grade Seven and Eight Submitted by Logan and Sean

As a new month came around the corner, the students of Gr. 7 and 8 learned

and discovered plenty of new things. One of the things that they learned is

how to properly write an informational writing piece. First they learned by

writing their own informational writing about our animal. Moving on to Social

Studies, we are currently learning about the differences between the USA and

Canada. We are learning information about the different historical events

between the two countries. As we transition to Science, we have already done

our unit test based on cells, microscopes, and the history of cells and its

theories. In Math with Mrs. H the Gr. 7 are currently learning Transformations

and Coordinates grid. Although Mrs. H has decided to make the Gr. 8 learn

about the Pythagorean theorem. As we transitioned to Mrs. K Math, both

grades currently learned and finished a test about Fractions, Decimals, and Per

cents, but now we are focusing on proper and improper fractions. During our

subject on gym, Mr. Ross has given us exercises like T25. Moving on to

Health have finished up our first unit on different Health services, and now are

learning about Family responsibilities. Given us the subject PAA we are

currently separated by groups and are given the task to make a healthy foods

for the whole class room. During Fine Arts we are coloring a large trees using

different coloring techniques. Upon our Career Ed. class, Mr. Burton has

made us write a report about our future jobs.

Grade Nine and Ten Submitted by Guillanne

The grade nine and ten classroom have been very active this month. Starting

with English, both grades have been learning about the unit on, “The World

Around and Within Us”. This unit consisted of finding our social identity,

diversity, deep and shallow reading, exploring power and privilege, and

examining the word “plagiarism”. We have recently been also looking at the

literary lenses. In Science class, we recently finished the unit, “Molecule and

Compounds”. The grade nines are learning about exponents this month, while

the grade tens wrapped up their previous unit on, “Angles and Transversals”.

They have now moved on to, “Similar Polygons”. In Life trans, we learned

about the importance of, goal setting. Mr. Burton has pushed us to come up

with our individual goals. We are learning about each other’s families

traditional foods. This month we have cooked Landon and Rudolph’s

traditional family food and we are excited to cook for more! In Art, we have

been doing small art projects, like illustrating an image, using the “Principles

and Elements of Design”. We are currently working on drawing an image of

our everyday life, inspired by the artist, Annie Pootoogook. Lastly, in

Yearbook, we completed our portrait photos and our artistic photos. This

month would be described as “challenging”, as well as “overloaded with

homework” from the nine and ten class.

Grade Eleven and Twelve Submitted by Nicholas and Royce

The 11 and 12 class has been very hard at work this month. In math the 12’s

are doing Trigonometry, while the 11’s learning how to find “x” in the

equations. In English, the 12’s are doing short stories meanwhile the 11’s just

finished reading the play Someday by Drew Hayden Taylor. In the exciting

world of History we concluded World War 1 and are reviewing what happens

in the lead up to World War 2. In Personal Finance we are learning about

decision making strategies. Physical Science the students have been balancing

equations and just completed their unit test. Law students have been learning

about the charter of Rights and Freedoms while French students are learning

about “les Media.” The students can’t wait for the Christmas holidays.

Senior Girls Volleyball Submitted by Kara

The Sr. Girls volleyball team ended their season

with a bang. Conferences were in the first week of

November in Annahiem. They ended up in the

final with Rose Valley, and it was intense. They

won the first set, but the second was even more

intense. Sadly, they lost the second 35-33, and

after lots of hard work they won the third. The

next weekend was regionals. Again, they found

themselves in the final game against Rose Valley.

This time, they won in two. They were fired up

and ready for their last weekend of volleyball in

Fox Valley for Provincials. They fought hard and

were undefeated on Friday. Their setter, #9 Anne

Lyza had injured her leg in the second game, but

the team kept going, keeping their win streak

alive. On Saturday, Anne Lyza was back to

playing, and they won their last pool play game

against Fox Valley. It was a sweet victory. They

began play-offs with another win! During the

heated semi-final match, they beat Vonda in the

first set, and on the last point of the second set, #6,

Tanya, went down, pulling a tendon in her foot.

Although she was injured, her play secured us a

medal. Tanya was no longer able to play. They

stayed undefeated until the final game against

Rose Valley. Sadly, they were unable to win the

gold, but they played well, and never gave up.

Thank you to all the fans who supported them

throughout the season! Go Eagles!

Senior Boys Volleyball

The Senior Boys volleyball team had a great year!

Unfortunately, we did not finish the season the

way we wanted to. The team placed fourth in

conferences which made us excluded us from

advancing into Regionals. However, we enjoyed

spending several weekends together making

countless memories that we will treasure and carry

with us into the future. We would like to thank

everyone that believed in us and came to cheer us

on during our tournaments. A special thanks goes

out to our parents that went out of their way to

supply us with whatever we needed, and for

driving us countless kilometers around

Saskatchewan. As well, our team wants to

thank Mrs. Pawluk for coming out to our home

games and helping us during our practices. She

made sure Mr. Ross didn’t go too hard on us and

helped provide some encouragement on the court.

Most importantly, we would all like to thank Mr.

Ross for his dedication to our team and for

constantly working with us to become better

players on the court, and better individuals off the

court.

SRC Submitted by Khrystyna

The SRC had a great November! Firstly, the SRC

had an easy hot lunch for the students and staff

consisting of hot dogs, hamburgers, and smokies.

Then a second hot lunch was held on November

14th provided by the SCC in which the SRC

members helped serve. This lunch was held for

diabetes awareness. There was a T/12 held on the

28th where teachers and students played a game of

volleyball. Lastly in-motion games were held in

the gym on November 30th. The SRC decorated

the school for Christmas with amazing lights and

ornaments. We are planning more exciting things
