England 2018 Ambassador Andy Cole visits children at an orphanage in Abuja, Nigeria.
“More than a decade ago I realised we have something very special in England.
We have football competitions and leagues which are deeply rooted in global culture, and international players who inspire around the world. I realised we could use this to give something back to the world – to a world that had given us so much.
That’s why I started the FA’s International Development Programme. For more than ten years, FA instructors, affiliated players and managers have travelled worldwide to share best practice with coaches, referees and administrators.
As well as delivering training in specific football disciplines, the FA now supports programmes which use football to improve health and education and to tackle problems such as HIV, racism and social exclusion.
Alongside, the Premier League’s Premier Skills project is developing community leaders by equipping young people with football coaching skills and expanding their leadership and language abilities.
A World Cup in England would allow us to continue expanding these programmes and work with even more people across the world. I would be proud to see this happen.”
Geoff Thompson OBE FIFA and UEFA Vice President
