In the United Kingdom and many other countries, the day is often known as Pancake Day. Making and eating

This event is said to have originated in Olney, England in 1444 when a housewife was still busy frying pancakes to eatefore the Lenten fast when she heard the bells of St Peter and St Paul' s Church calling her to the Shriving Service. Eager to geto church, she ran out of her house still holding the frying pan complete with pancake, and still wearing her apron and headscarf.ancake Day is widely celebrated in Australia.

    Traditions

Paparudaaparuda is a Romanian and Bulgarian rain ritual , probably of pagan origin, performed in the spring and in times of severe drought.

A girl, wearing a skirt made of fresh green knitted vines and small branches, sings and dances through the streets of the village, stopping atvery house, where the hosts pour water on her. She is accompanied by the people of the village who dance and shout on the music. Theustom has attributed a specific type of dance and a specific melody.

A similar Romanian rain ritual is the Caloian .

he name is probably derived from Perperuna , which in its turn is a Slavic (south slavic) goddess, or as Sorin Paliga suggests, is a divinity fromhe local Thracian substratum.

DragobeteDragobete is a traditional Romanian holiday, celebrated on February 24. Dragobete was the son of Baba Dochia .

he day is known as "the day when the birds are betrothed". It is around this time that the birds begin to build their nests and mate. On this day, onsidered locally the first day of spring, boys and girls gather vernal flowers and sing together. Maidens used to collect the snow that still lies onhe ground in many villages and then melt it, using the water in magic potions throughout the rest of the year. Those who take part in Dragobeteustoms are supposed to be protected from illness, especially fevers, for the rest of the year. If the weather allows, girls and boysick snowdrops or other early spring plants for the person they are courting. In Romania, Dragobete is known as a day for lovers, rather like

    Valentine's Day.

is a common belief in some parts of Romania that, during this celebration, if you step over your partner's foot, you will have the dominant rolen your relationship. Dragobete customs vary from region to region.
