In 2008, under the premise that it was necessary to comply with the European Convention on Human Rights, and with the influence of the Barclay brothers,

Sark dismantled its previous feudal system of government.

They are connected by a narrow isthmus called La Coupée which is 300 feet (91 m) long and has a drop of 330 feet (100 m) on each side.

Protective railings were erected in 1900.

In January 2011 Sark was the first island to be designated as a Dark Sky Community. Other places with the designation have been mainly uninhabited.

The Dark Sky designation recognizes that Sark is sufficiently clear of light pollution to allow naked-eye astronomy. Though Sark was aided in its achievement by its location,

its historic ban on cars and the fact that they have no public lighting, it was also necessary that the local residents make adjustments.

They have been highly commended for re-siting lights and other efforts.

Although motorized vehicles are prohibited, tractors are the exception.

The economy depends primarily on tourism.

Off the south end of Little Sark are the Venus Pool and the Adonis Pool, both natural swimming pools whose waters are refreshed at high tide.

Above Venus Pool is the site of the old Sark silver mines which were built in the 1830s. The crumbling remains of the chimneys and buildings still remain.

The "Le Moulin" windmill (circa 1905) is located at the highest point on Sark is 374 feet (114 m) above sea-level.

Here is the original windmill, dated 1571.

During World War II, the island was occupied by

German forces from 1940–1945, as were the other

Channel Islands. The sails were removed at that time.

Sark Prison is apparently the smallest in the world. It can house 2 prisoners and is still used for overnight stays.
