Exciting times in Combustion Research for two reasons:

1.Price of Fuel Steadily Increasing ?

2.“Global Warming” Legislation Increasing

As a consequence of either topic above, there is

renewed effort for increased engine efficiency

(use less money and generate less CO2 ) and a

search for alternative “ renewable” fuels.

There is also new money for new (and old) ideas.

Enhance Oil Recovery: EOR.

Inject 6 tons of CO2 to stimulate “production ” of 1 ton of Oil

Each ton of oil is now carbon negative

? Carbon credits ?

? Bitcoins ?

Injection pressure is about 300 bar.

A likely route for Saudi Arabia to combat Climate Change: profitable !

Brayton Cycle, with “regeneration” ( a heat exchanger ! )

Page 6: Engines with Working fluids of Argon (Dibble Cycle ... - TJU

Whoa !

1…low gamma ! “k”

CO2 better than N2 !

2….low pressure ratio, r=1 ?

What about SF6 ? Freon? NH3?

Review

• CO2 cycle can replace a combine cycle of gas turbine and steam turbine…. Save $$ 50% ?

• Allam cycle at 300 bar machine is Smaller ! ?

• Heat exchanger is “essential”

• Compression near critical point clever trick

• BONUS see next slide

60% Efficient Engines exist NOW !

Efficiency increases with size, less heat lossNote: 10 to 50 MegaWatts ….WOW
