Example 5: Dial –Spinning Game A dial is spun, the angle θ is measured so that it lies
between 0o and 180o. (Fig 2.19 in your textbook)
→ The value of θ obtained is a continuous random variable taking any value between 0 and 180; i.e. the state space is [0, 180]
Suppose that when a player spins the dial, he wins the amount corresponding to: $1000×(θ/180)
→ The amount won is a random variable taking values within the interval [0, 1000]

Discrete: probabilistic properties are defined through a probability mass function (pmf)
Continuous: probabilistic properties are defined through a probability density function (pdf).

The cumulative distribution function of a continuous random variable X is defined in exactly the same way as for a discrete random variable, namely,
